HENRY R. GILSON, 0F BADEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACHMENT-PLUG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 19142.
Application filed June 27, 1913. Serial No. 776,046.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY R. GILSON, residing at Baden, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Attachment-Plugs, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a simple and etlicient attachment plug for electrical installations, such plug being provided with a protecting casing, and constructed in such a manner that the several parts thereof may beunited in rigid structure by means of a single securing member.
A further object of my inventlon is to provide an eflicient and cheaply manufactured contact post for such attachment plugs.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of my specification, I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention, the plug being connected to the end of an electrical conductor conduit.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete plug; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the disclosure of Fig. 1, the cap being removed; Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the complete installation; Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the body portion of the plug; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line VV; and Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the cap.
Like numerals are used to designate like parts in the several figures.
In the practice of my invention 1 provide a body block of insulation, suitably shaped for the desired installation, and provided with a pair of contact clips. Extending over the clips, and protecting them against an accidental short circuit, I provide an in sulation cover having holes through which contact posts of a cap may extend. Both the body block and cover are provided with suitable detents adapted to be engaged by correspondingly formed detents of a casing, which covers the exposed portions of the insulating members and interlocks them in such a manner that the several parts of the attachment plug may be united into a rigid structure by means of a single screw or like securing member.
Referring more particularly to the embodiment of my invention illustrated herein, the body block 1 is cylindrical, having a groove in one side adapted to receive the conduit 2. A pair of diverging contact clips 3, i are mounted in the block, and, in a central recess thereof, a nut at is embedded in wax. The outer portion of the block is provided with an annular head 5 on which the casing 6 rests, the continuity of the bead being interrupted by a detent 7, which fits into a correspondingly formed detent or notch in said casing. The insulation cover 8 is also cylindrical and is provided with holes 9, 9*, enlarged interiorly to re-- ceive the clips 3, 8*, and through which hole contact posts 10 of cap 11 may be inserted to make the desired electrical connection. Between the holes 9, 9, a slot or groove 12 is formed, the casing 6 also having a depressed portion or groove 13 adapted to fit neatly into such cover groove, and thereby prevent relative movement of the casing and cover.
The body 1, cover 8 and casing 6 are secured together by means of a screw 14, which extends through the grooved portions of the casing and cover and engages the nut 4 of body 1. When the parts are thus assembled, it will readily be seen that the casing 6, which is preferably made of pressed metal, serves the double function of a protection for the outer surfaces of the body 1 and cover 8, and an interlocking member between said parts.
The contact posts 10 of cap 11 are of a particular form which I find to be very eiiicient and cheaply manufactured. Each post is of the knife blade or fiat plate type and has a hook portion 15 extending laterally from one side thereof, such hook fording a substantial look when engaging the diverging clips 3. The manufacture of the posts 10 is effected bya stamp or die press, the hook portion 15 being formed by a suitable recess in the die block.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an electric attachment plug, the combination of an insulating body having a pair of contact clips mounted therein, an insulating cover adapted to protect said clips and provided with openings to receive contact posts, a casing interlocked with said body and with said cover, and a single securing means uniting said several parts into a rigid structure.
2. in e combination having a pair rical attachment plug, the yhndrical insulating body of contact clips mounted tect said clips and therein, an insulating cover adapted to proprovided with openings to receive contact posts, said body and cover each provided With a casing-engaging detent, and a casing provided with detents interlocking with said body and cover detents, and a single screw engaging said body through said cover and casing and thereby uniting said several parts into a rigid structure.
3. In an electric attachment plug, the combination of a cylindrical insulating body having a pair of contact clips mounted therein and provided with an annular bead to receive the edges of a casing, the continuity of said bead ing engaging detent, an insulating cover adapted to protect said clips and provided being interrupted by a caswith openings to receive contact posts, there being a groove between said openings, a metal casing inclosing said cover and bearing upon; said bead the edge of said casing being provided with a detent and the central portion thereof With a groove adapted to engage said head detent and said cover groove respectively, and a single screw extending through the grooved portionsn of said casing and cover and engaging said body thereby uniting said several parts into a rigid structure- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
