FRUIT-JAR HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. r, Patented Feb, 27, 1917.
Application filed April 6, 1916. Serial N 0. 89,417.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Osoin E. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delmar, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in F ruit-J ar Holders, of which the following is a SPGClfiCfitlOIl;
This inventlon is an improved device for holding fruit jars, cans, and the like, while their contents are being cooked and for removing the jars from the cooking vessel and otherwise handling the jars during the canning process, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is extremely cheap and simple and which holds the jars or cans securely so that they cannot fall out and yet permits the ready removal of the jars or cans.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fruit jar holder, constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal sectional view.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a tray or base 1 which may be of any suitable shape and is here shown as in the form of a double cross, comprising a longitudinally arranged bar 2 and a pair of spaced cross bars 3 which are also spaced from the ends of the bar 2. A longitudinal wall 4 is arranged centrally on the upper side of the bar 2 and each cross bar 3 has a transverse wall 5 arranged centrally on its upper side. Any suitable number of the cross bars may be employed according to the desired capacity of the base or tray. In the present instance, the base or tray has a capacity for six jars or cans as shown, the crossed bars and their walls providing jar receiving compartments 6, each of which is open on one side.
A bail 7 of wire or the like has its ends attached to the base or tray and is used for carrying the holder from place to place together with the jars or cans on the holder.
Each wall is provided with'a notch 8 in its outer end and with a pin or stop device 9 near the outer side of the notch. A band 10 which in practice is a spring, has one end attached to one of the walls 5. The said spring band passes through all of the notches 8 and extends around the holder and is adapted to engage on the outer sides of the jars or cans in the compartments of the holder and to secure the jars or cans in place as will be understood. Near its free end, the spring band also passes through one of the notches. Owing to the spring action of the band and the friction between the same and'adjacent parts the same tends to remain in any position in which it is placed. To tighten the band around the jars or cans,
the free end of the band is drawn upon as will be understood. In order to release the jars or cans and permit them to be removed from the holder, it is first necessary @toloosen the band by sliding it longitudinally through the notches as-will be understood.
. My improved holder may be made of any suitable size and shape and may be adapted tofcarry and hold any desired number of jars or cans.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
A fruit jar holder of the class described comprising a tray having walls arranged to form jar receiving compartments each of which is open on one side, said-walls being provided with guide openings, and a band attached to one of said walls and extending through said guide openings and adapted to contact with theouter sides of the jars or cans, said'band being a spring and tending by its own spring action and by friction between the band and the sides of the guide openings to remain in any position in which it may be arranged.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
osoIE E. BROWN.
