lNlPRQVEMENT EN KEV=BQARDS FOR REED AND PIPE ORGANS.
Specification forniinI part of Letters Patent No. 121,768, dated December 12, 1871.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, (Jani. FoenLBnnG, ot' Boston, in the county ot' Snlt'olk and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented an lmprovenlentl in Reed land Pipe Ure-ans or Key-Board Musical Instruments, and l do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the d awinel Which accompanies and t'orms part ot' this speciicL tion, is a description ot' my invention, sut'ticient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
by invention relates particularly to an improvement in pipes or in a system oi" pipes t'or reed organs or key-board musical instruments.
ln all such instruments, so t'ar as l know, the pipes are tubes7 each complete and independent ct' the others. In large organs such pipe construction is practical and reliable, but in small organs, which are more or less portable, and which are sent complete l'rom the ware-rooms, and are to be ready t'or use when they reach their destinations, not being` packed and Vl'orwarded in parts and set up by a workman, as are church organs, such independent or individual construe tion and arrangement is more or less unreliable. Each pipel in all such instruments has its own 'asteninn's, and as the pipes have to be removable, it relpiires great skill to place all the pipes in their proper relative positions, as well as great labor' in applyinf" or removing;h them, and trom shrinkage ol' wood and imperfecttaslenings the pipes are at all times liable to become loose and shaky, to the obvious injury ot' the power and tone ot' the instrument. lily invention is designed to remedy these defects resulting i'roin the system ot'independent pipes.
ln my construction l i'orm the whole series of pipes in one pipe-case or box, each pipe being a compartment ot said case, which is a long box or chest, formed otA two parallel side boards, placed eter suitable tor each pipe, and provided with cross-partitions placed at regular distances apart to leave spaces between thein correslionding to the space between the side boards, the opposite sides ot' each partition t'orniing two walls t'or two adjacent pipes, the case being made short at one end and long` or deep at the other end, to Conform to the lengths of the various pipes of the series. It is insuch construction of the pipes or pipecase or chest that my invention consists.
The drawing` represents a series oi" organ-pi pes or pipe-passages embodying the improvement.
A shows the pipes, and the air and 'alve-box or passage t'rom which they lead. B is a section on the line .r a', showin,r the parts in t'ull size, A showing,- the parts in quarter size. u denotes the pipe-box or case, made up ot` the two outer or side boards o c and the end walls d c, the boards I) c being ot' irregular depth, as seen at A, but beingl placed parallel and having a clear space between them, as seen at B. The case is made ot' a length to embrace the whole series ot' the pipes, and is provided with the cross-partitions j', placed at equal distances apart, so as to t'orm with the boards b c the organ-pipes or passages, each passage y, except the two end ones, being bounded by the inner surfaces oli' the two side boards, and one sx ltace otI each ot' two adjacent partitions, f, the inner surfaces ot' the end walls d c 't'ormingy respectively, one ot` the surfaces of each end passage. The space between the two boards l) c and that between each two adjacent partitions are preferably the same, and the quadrangnlar space i'ormed bythe tour snrtaces is ct' the requisite area tor each pipe. The pipecase is shown as depending trom a lonl tube box, z, by which the pipes are connected with a valve-box, i, having;` a series ot valve-passages, c, each connecting` at one end with the passage. Z leading llirongh the tube-box, and at its upper end with a longe` air-chest or box, t, coninion to all the valvepassages, the communication between each -valve-pas age I and the air-space 'la being,` controlled by a valve or clapper, n. The top ot' the pipecase is surinounted by a longl flap-valve, o, covering the open tops ot all of the pipes. Each valve 'n has depending from it a stein or wire, p, at the bottoni of which is a button, q, the buttons q and val ves n bein g operated by the keys ci' the instruin ent.
I claim- The series et' reed-organ pipes or pipe-passages g, formed by the walls or boards b c and the cross-partitionsj, and covered or controlled by the Valve 0, substantially as shown and described.
