SANDING DEVICE FOR STORAGE-BATTERY LoeoMo'rIvEs'.
7 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 27, 1917. Original application filed January 22, 1916, Serial No. 73,568. Divided and this application filed July 10,
' 1916. Serial No. 108,397.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. PRATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,'in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sanding Devices for Storage-Battery Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sanding devices for storage battery locomotives and has for its object to provide a new and improved device of this description.
The invention is illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is. a side elevation of a storage battery locomotive embodying the inven-- tion' Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1,. with parts omittedto show the operating mechanism for the sanding device;
Fig. 3 is a view showing the sand box valve;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 2.
Like numerals refer to like parts through-- out the several figures.
This case is a divisional application con taining the subject matter divided from my application filed January 22, 1916, Serial No. 73568. In the particular construction herein shown the locomotive is formed in three sections pivotally connected together, a central section 1 and two end sections 2 and 3, the central section being pivotally connected with the two end sections. The two end sections may be similar in construe tion and are each provided with a suitable frame mounted upon four wheels. Two of these wheels 5 are drive wheels and'are made of the proper size for this purpose.
The other two wheels 6 are smaller wheels and are locatedvunder the middle or central section 1 of the locomotive upon which is carried the storage battery 7. The end sections are each preferably provided with electric motors 8 and 9 which are operatively connected with the driving wheels in any desired manner. The wheels of the two end sections are provided with sanding devices adapted to be operated from one end of the locomotive, and this necessitates a particular compensating structure in view of the three-section construction of the 10- comotive. As illustrated herein, the front sectionis provided with the sand boxes 10 and the rear section with the sand boxes 11. Each sand box is provided with a valve controlled by a shaft 12 to which is connected. a crank 13. The sand boxes are ar-' ranged so that sand may be discharged-in front of one set of driving wheels when the locomotive is going in one direction and in front of the other set of driving wheels when the locomotive is going in the other direction, and the two sets of sand boxes are controlled from the same end of the locomotive. 'The sand boxes 10 and 11 are controlled by means-of a lever 14, which is connected with the shaft 12 of one of the sand boxes. A connecting rod 15 connects the cranks 13 of the opposite shafts 12, so that when the lever 14 is moved both shafts will be rotated. The rod 15 is provided with a take-up joint 16. Itwill thus beseen that the valves of these sand boxes 10 may be opened by simply moving the lever 14, thereby causing sand to be discharged in front of the driving wheels of the front end section 2 of the locomotive. The valves of the sand boxes on the other end section 3 of the locomotive are also controlled from the front section. As herein shown, the shafts 12 at the other end of the locomotive are controlled by a lever 17 which rocks a shaft 18'having a crank 19. Connected with this crank is a rod 20 which is connected to one end'of the bell crank lever 21 pivoted at 22 to the plate 23 mounted on the piece 24. The pivot 25 which connects the rod 20 with the bell crank lever 21 is located directly over the pivot 26, which connects the front section 2 of the locomotive with the central section 1 so that as the 10- comotive passes around curves the bell crank lever will not be actuated. The bell crank lever 21 is connected by a link 26 to an arm 27 on a rock shaft 28 which passes to the other end section 3 of the locomotive. This rock shaft has a similar arm 29 which is connected by a link '30 with the bell crank lever 31 pivoted at 32 to a plate 33 on the central section. A rod 34 is connected by a pivot 35 with the bell crank lever 31, said pivot section 3 of the locomotive. The rod 34 is connected to a crank 35 on a shaft 36 mounted on the end section. A slotted crank 37 connected with the said shaft engages a pin 38-on the rod 39, which connects with the cranks 13 on the shafts 12 of the sand boxes. It will thus be seen that by moving the lever 17 the shafts 1:2 on the section 3 of the locomotive will be moved to release sand in front of the driving wheels of the end sec tion 3 in the event the locomotive is moving in that direction, and that the passing of the locomotive around curves does not in any'manner interfere with this operating mechanism; I prefer to arrange the sanding device so that the valves may be closed automatically when the-actuating handie is released. In the construction shown, this closing is accomplished by springs 54 which connect with the rods 15 and 39. When the levers are moved to open the valves and are then released, these springs move the parts back to their initial position so as to automatically close the valves.
I have described in detail a particular construction embodying the invention, but it is of course evident that the parts may be varied in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the particular construction shown.
1 claim:

comprising a series of connecting pieces 6X.
tending from the front of the locomotive to the rear thereof and including two bell crank levers pivotally connected with the Copies of this -patent-may 'be obtained for central section near the pivots which con- 'each of said end sections, a sanding device for discharging sand upon the track in proximity to said driving wheels, a controlling mechanism therefor, extending from said end section to the otherend section, and means for controlling said controlling mechanism from said latter end section when the several sections are in all their various positions.
at. A locomotive comprising 'a central section and two end sections pivotally connected together, driving wheels on each of said end sections, sand boxes associated with the driving wheels of one end section, for discharging sand upon the track in proximity to said driving wheels, valves for said sand boxes, an actuating-device on the other 'end section, a connection between said actuating device and said valves comprising a rod connected with said actuating device, a pivoted lever to which said rod is pivoted, the
' pivotal connection between the lever and the rod being in linew'ith the pivotal connection between the central section and the end section carrying said actuating device, a connection leading from said pivoted lever to a second pivoted lever associated with the end section carrying the sand boxes, a rod pivotal-1y connected with said second pivoted lever at a point in line with the pivotal connection between the central section and the last mentioned cnd sectiomaind a connection between said pivoted lever and said valves whereby the valves of said sand boxes of one section are actuated by the actuating device on the other section in all the various positions of the section.
In testimony whereof, I afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses this 6th day of Juli, 1916. I
