IMPROVEMENT IN COVERINGS FOR WHIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,761, dated December 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VELENUs W. GRovvsoN, of Westtield, Hampden county, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invent-ed an Improved Covering for /Vhips, of Which the following is a specification My invention relates more particularly to an improvement upon my Letters Patent No.104,- 433, of June 2l, 1870, of Which a covering for Whips is made or' raw gutta-percha applied to the Whip-stock in a melted state, and then rolled to finish it; and my invention now consists in the application to the stock of a narrowr strip of raW gutta-percha steeped in boiling Water until softened to the point of causing the overlapping edges, as it is spirally Wound upon the stock, to closely adhere, so that when the Wound stock is passed through rollers or otherwise pressed, the covering of strips amalgamates to one coating as complete as if, as in the above quoted patent, it Were melted on, and a smooth surface is afforded for au outside cover of plaiting should such be desired, and an additional elasticity lent by the gutta-percha to the stock Without the disr advantage, attendant upon many linings, of turning or becoming loose under the plait, as the soft gutta-percha adheres as firmly to the stock and plaiting (should such be added) as its edges do to each other. By this means Iform an admirable Water-proof covering to the stock, and one as durable as it is simple and cheap.
What I claim is- A Whip-stock covered by strips of raw guttapercha, substantially in the manner specified.
