BOLSTER-STAKE HOLDER;
Specification of Letters Patent. J
Application filed December 18, 1916. Serial No. 137,565.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in bolster stakeholders, more particularly of that type embodied in Patent No. 1,082,074, granted to me December 23, 1913, and comprising a socket member including portions hinged to swing open to release the bolster stake and having latch means associated there with for holding said portions in closed position. 4
It is in general the object of the invention to simplify and otherwise improve the structure and to improve the efliciency and readiness of operation of devices of this nature.
More specifically, an object of the invention resides in the provision of an arrangement wherein the latch means of the socket sections is relieved from strain when the sections are closed and holding a bolster stake.
A further object resides in the provision of a bolster stake holder adapted moreparticularly for use in metallic car structures wherein a snug metallic fit is afiorded the bolster stake to obviate the necessity of providing wear. plates thereof.
A still further object is to provide an arrangement whereby in closing the latch means of the stake holder, a cam actionis exerted on the socket members to urge them -to a proper position to snugly engage a bolster stake disposed therein.
With the above and other obj ects in view,
the invention resides more particularly in ingthe method of attachment of one of the socket sections thereto. Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates a channeled side sill of a car ofmetallic construction, and 6 designates a cross sill thereof, I
The present stake holder comprises, as in the structure of my said previous patent, a pair of arcuate socket sections 7 and 8 respectively and to 'hingedly secure these sections tothe sill 5 in such manner that the sill forms the inner wall of the socket, the inner end of each section is reduced and carries the vertical pintles 9 engageable in a pair of vertically alined upper and lower bearing blocks 10 and 11 respectively. a
For locking the socket sections together the section 7is cut away at its outer portions to provide a flat face 12 and the free edge of the socket section 8 is provided with an intermediate opening, the inner end portions of which are extended to form recesses 13 and pivoted to the socket section 7 on the surface 12 are a pair of locking arms 1 1 which are adapted to extend into the recess of the socket section 8 and which have lateral projections 15 at their freeends engageable in said recesses 13.
For holding the arms in this locking position a pair of pivotally connected links 16 are provided with their outer ends pivoted to the arms and connected to the links preferably: by means of the common pivot bolt thereof, is a latch bar 17 extending toward the socket section 7 and having its free end laterally directed and apertured to engage over a" lug 18 on the side of said socket section which is adapted to receive a locking -pin 19 whereby undesired opening movement of the socket is prevented. To release the locking arms, upon removal of the pin,
it is merely necessary to pull the latch bar Patented Feb.2'7, 1917.
means including the latch bar 17 is relieved from such strain. Inasmuch as the outer side Walls of the recesses 13 and the adjacent faces of the locking arm extensions 14 are beveled, it is seen that movement of said extensions into the sockets 13 Will procure a camming action of the socket member 8, to draw both socket members together to thus insure a snug fit of the bolster stake disposed therein;
Inasmuch as the socket sections 7 and 8 and the car sill 5 are of metal, and comprise the entire socket the necessity of providing Wear plates on the loWer end of the bolster stake is obviated, particularly in vieW of the snug fit afforded the stake by the cam action of the locking arms.
W hat is claimed is: v
1. A bolster stake holder comprising a socket member including a hinged portion, a locking arm pivoted to the socket member and adapted for detachable interlocking engagement With the hinged portion, a link pivoted to the locking arm, a latch bar connected With the link and means for locking said latch bar against movement.
2. A bolster stake holder comprising a socket member comprising a pair of hinged portions, a locking arm pivoted to one of the hingedportions and adapted for detachable interlocking engagement With the other hinge portion and means operable upon movement in the direction of hinge move ment of the hinge portions for moving said locking arm out of interlocking engagement. 3. A bolster stake holder comprising a socket member including a hinged portion provided With recesses a pair of arms hinged to the socket member, lateral projections on said arms adapted for interlocking engagement in the recesses, pivotally connected links pivoted to the locking arms, a latch bar connected with the links and means for locking said latch bar against movement.
I. A bolster stake holder comprising a socket member including a hinged portion, a locking arm pivoted to the socket member and adapted for detachable interlocking en gagement With the hinged portion, a link pivoted to the locking arm, a latch bar connected With the link and means for locking said latch bar against movement, and said locking arm and hinged socket portions including inclined portions adapted to procure a cam action upon movement of the locking arm to operative position for drawing the hinged socket portion to closed position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of VVisconsin.
