Be it knownthat I, JOHN P. Boor-IAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marcus, in the county of Cherokee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separators, ofl which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in separators and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use for the purpose of screening sand or the like.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with a rotary screen and with laterally disposed elevators or conveyers, one for receiving the fine screened sand, and the other the tailings.
A further object is to provide a machine of this character with means for securing a preliminary separation of very large stones or material not intended to pass into the rotary screen, this preliminary separator being so constructed that it .will not be clogged and being further so constructed that it may Y when in applied position is the hopper H be -readily put in position in the rotary screen, or removed vfrom this position, whenever desired.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means wherebythe'screening web on the rotary screen will be readily changed and whereby it will be firmly held in position during operation.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accoinpanying drawings, wherein- Figurev 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a separator constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, with the feeding member omitted;

Thel screening element S, as herein disclosed, comprises duplicate sections having adjacent longitudinal portions hingedly connected one with the other, as indicated at 8, while the opposite longitudinal portions adjacent the ends thereof are provided with a coacting locking means 9 of ordinary construction and affording a means whereby said screening element may be clamped upon the spiders 4: or '5 or removed therefrom when required so that screening elements of differing mesh may be employed as the requirements of practice may dictate.
Positioned below the screening element S delivering upon'the lower extremity of the endless conveyer 10, the lower extremity of said conveyer intersecting the discharge y spout 11 and being disposed around the drum 12 fixed upon'the shaft 14, one extremity of which extends beyond one side of the conveyer frame 15 and has aflixed thereto the gear 16 in mesh with the gear 17 carried by the shaft 18 disposed longitudinally of the member 1 and operatively supported by one wall of thefconveyer frame 15 and the head 19 carried'by the member 1. rIhe shaft 18 has aixedthereto the lowermost roller 20 of the endless conveyer 21 positioned below the discharging end of the screening element S and being, adapted to receive and conveythe screenings or gravel discharged by saidscreening element. The shaft 18fis also. operatively connected, as at 22, with the`sh'aft`-3, hereinbefore referred to, wherebylv the screening element S and the conveyers 10 and 21 will operate in unison.
While any means may be employed for imparting the requisite axial rotation to the shaft 3, the means, as'herein embodied, comprises the motor M of conventional form operatively'engaged through the medium of the shaft 23 with one extremity of the shaft 3, as is believed to be clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings.
I also find it of advantage to employ in connection with the screening element S the feeding member or chute 24 provided with the upstanding hook membersl 25 adapted to be operatively engaged with the top bar 26 of the frame 2 adjacent the receiving end of the screening element, and said chute or feed member is of such a length as to extend within the screening element so that the material delivered thereto will be properly delivered within the element S. The cross beam 26, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4 is rectangular in cross section and the hooks 25 are bent so as to closely embrace this cross bar and with the shanls of the hooks resting against the outer face of the cross bar, thus supporting the chute 24 rigidly in position but at the same time permitting the chute to be readily removed at any time when its use is not necessary. The member 24C is substantially rectangular in cross section and the top and bottom walls are disposed in converging planes in a direction toward the screening element. The outer or receiving' end of the feeding member or chute 21 is intersected by the bars 27 spaced apart a distance suflicient to readily permit the passage therebetween of sand and gravel but serving to prevent the passage of stones or other objects of undue size which, if delivered within the screening element, would have a tendency to interfere with the operation of the device and to injure the element. It is also to be noted that the members 12 are angularly disposed relative to the longitudinal aXis of the feeding member or chute 24 whereby the lower or bottom wall of the feeding member is arranged on a predetermined downward incline relative to the screening element when the same is in ap plied position.
It will be seen that the bars 27 extend downward and rearward. As a consequence, material which is thrown against the bars 27 and which does not pass between these bars will slide down the bars 27 and be discharged, thus preventing this initial separator from becoming clogged.
I claim:
1. In a separator, a shaft, annular spiders carried on the shaft, a cylindrical screen detachably mounted on the spiders and comprising two substantially duplicate longitudinally extending semi-cylindrical sections having their adjacent longitudinal margins on one side hingedly connected, and coacting clamping means on the opposite longitudinal edges of the sections.
2. In a separator, a shaft, annular spiders carried on the shaft, and a cylindrical screen detachably mounted on the spiders and comprising two substantially duplicate longitudinally extending sections of screening materia-l, rigid semi-circular reinforcing strips disposed at the ends of said sections, and longitudinally extending strips disposed on the marginal edges of the sections, the longitudinal strips on one side being hingedly connected, coacting clamping means attached to the longitudinal strips on the opposite edges including angularly projecting lugs, and bolts detachably engaging said lugs with each other.
