PERMUTATION-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR BERCIITOLD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at East Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Locks, of which the following isa specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to permutationlocks and has for its object to provide a lock of this class, in a manner as hereinafter plate being shifted by the ward of a key to release the shackle of a lock.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a pad lock which is simple in-its construction and arrangement, strong, du-
rable efficient, and convenient in its use, readily set u sive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come'within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 denotes the body portion of a circular lock casing,- and 6 the back wall thereof. The
body portion of the casing 5 is formed with andcomparatively inexpenopenings 7, 8 and said casing 5 has an open front.
The open front of the circularcasing is closed through the medium of a sectional cover plate which consists of an annular member 9, having a disk 10 secured to its,
inner face and said disk 10 is provided with laterallyextending lugs 11, and said lugs 11 are secured to the annular member 9 by rivets 12. The outer face of the disk 10 is provided with a dial 13 and the said, dial is similar to the dial of a clock. m I
The member 9 is furthermore provided with a series of openings 14 into which is secured the forward ends of pins 15, 1,6, and 17 which project forward from the inner face of the back wall 6 of the circular casing. By this arrangement the cover plate is fixedly secured in position to close the circular casing The member 9 is also formed with a key-hole opening .18 and arranged concentric with respect to the enlarged portion of the openings 18 is a pin 19.
Mounted against the inner face of the wall 6, and capable of being shifted thereon, is a locking plate 24 which is notched as at 25 and 26 to provide clearance for guide pins 26 and 27. The plate 24 iscut away at one edge as at 28, to form a shoulder capable of being engaged by the ward 29 of a key stem 30. The plate 24 is furthermore cut away as at 31 to form clearance for the shouldered end 23, of the shackle 20, and said plate 24 v has projecting-from one face a stop lug 32 dium of a two-arm spring 34, and which is I mounted upon a pin 35 carried by the rear wall 6 of the circular casing' One arm of the spring 34 bears against the projection 22,

lVhenthe shouldered end of the shackle extends into the circular casing, the plate 24 is permanently maintained in locking engagement therewith, through the medium of the spring 34, and when said plate is shifted by the ward 29, to release the shouldered end of the shackle, the shifting of the plate 24 is had against the action of the spring 34.
Associated with the locking plate 24 is an adjustable permutation device which cooperates with the stop lug until said per-, mutation device, is ad usted to provide clearance for the stop lug The said permutation device consists of a circular inner disk 37, and a circular outer disk 38 the latter being provided with a centrally disposed opening-39, and the former with a shaft 40, which projects through the opening 39, the disk 38 is furthermore provided with a collar 41 which forms a continuation of the opening 39,. The shaft 40 projects through and beyond collar 41. The disk 10 is formed with posed opening 42 through which projects collar 41. The disk 38 is arranged against the inner face of the disk 10, while the disk 37 is arranged against the disk 08. Connected to the outer end of the shaft 40 is a setting hand 43 which corresponds to the minute hand of a clock, and conncctedto the collar 41 is a setting hand 44, which corresponds to the hour hand of a clock. The disk 37 is independently movable by its setting hand 43 with respect to the disk 38, and the latter is independently movable by its setting hand 44 with respect to the disk 37, The disk 37 can rotate inwardly of the disk 38, while the latter can rotate upon the shaft 40. Each of the disks 37 and 38 is provided when said notches are in alinement clearance is provided for the stop lug Unless the notches 45 are in alinement, the stop lug 32 will engage against one of the edges, of one of the disks, or against the edges of both of the disks and arrests releasing movement of the locking plate, but if the notches 45 are in alinement, the lug 3:2 can travel a suflicient distance to allow the plate 24 being shifted to release the shouldered end of the shackle 20.
The disks 37 and 38 are respect to each other that it would require any one opening the lock, to move the setting hands, upon the dial, to indicate an hour, by way of example, the hour is illustrated as 8. I f the setting hands are moved to indicate 8 oclock, then the notches 45 are brought to register and a clearance is provided to allow the plate 24 and stop lug a centrally diswith a notch 45 and so positioned with,
32 being shifted sufficiently to permit the plate 24 to release the shackle 20.
It will be understood that until the hands 43 and 44 are positioned in a predetermined releasing arrangement, any shifting of the plate 24 tending to release the shackle 20 will'result in engaging the lug 32 against the periphery disks 37 and 38, thus preventing such shifting movement of the plate.
Although the hour is illustrated as 8, it is obvious that the disk can be set whereby any desired hour to indicate the proper adjusting of the disks 37 and 38 can be employed.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. A permutation lock comprising a casing, a shackle having one end beveled connected therewith and its other end shouldered and capable of extending therein, guide pins secured to the inner wall of and projecting within said casing, an irregular shaped locking plate arranged in said casing and provided with a stop lug capable of engaging the shouldered end of said shackle for locking plate further provided with oppositely dis posed cut out portions extending from the periphery thereof inwardly and adapted to receive said guide pins and provide a clearance therefor, said plate having a cut away portion at the bottom thereof providing a key engaging shoulder, a lug projecting from said plate, a permutation device cooperating with said plate comprising an inner disk having a shaft projecting therefrom, an outer disk having a hub revolubly mounted upon the said shaft, hands upon the ends of said. shaft and hub, each of said disks being provided with a notch adapted to provide a clearance for the said lug only when the said notches are positioned in alinement with the said lug, a dial positioned adjacent the said hands and a double armed spring bearing against the beveled end of said shackle and the adjacent side of said plate adapted to normally hold the shackle and plate in their locked positions.
2. A padlock comprising a casing having a rear wall and a front dial, inwardly projecting pins carried by said rear well, an irregular shaped plate shiftably mounted upon the said wall and arranged With substantially opposite notches guidingly positioned over the said pins, a keeper lug carried by the said plate, a shackle hinged to the latter, said locking the said casing and having a locking end positioned beneath the said keeper lug when in its locked arrangement, a two armed positloning spring te nsioned between the said shackle and plate, circular disks in flat engagement with each other revolubly seated upon the forward face of the said plate spaced between the said pins and provided with peripheral notches of equal dimen sions, a projecting stop lug upon the outer face-of said plate and having a path of movement inwardly of the said notches when said disks are in their released positions during the shifting of the plate, peripheral portions of the said disks being in the path of movement of the said stop lug when the disks are in their normal locked positions, and separate operating hands for the said disks arranged outwardly of the 1 said dial.
