To all whom t may concern:
Be it know-n that I, JosErI-I Porre, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Saline and State of Illinois, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This inven tion relates to miners lamps of that type adapted to-burn acetylene gas and having a generator forming part thereof, the object of the invention being to provide a lamp of this characterdiaving a plurality of generators supplied with water from a common receptacle, and which generators may be ,independently filled, so that 4when one becomes exhausted the other will be in use to supply gas for ignition.
A further object of the invention is to provide an acetylene miners lamp which is simple of construction, compact in form, adapted to be readily and conveniently charged with water and carbid, and by means of which gas may be supplied to give a continuous light while the lamp is in use.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing showing in vertical section a minersvlamp constructed in accordance with my invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the body oit the lamp which is of tubular 'lj'orm and is provided at its Forward end with a reflector 2 and at its rear end with a main carbid chamber 3 separated 'from the iforward end oi the body portion by a partition 4l. ,The chamber 3 is adapted to bo .filled` with carbid through the open rear end thereof, which is closed when the lamp is in use by a screw cap or cover A burner tube 6 extends through the body portion from the chamber 3 to a point immediately in front of the reflector, where it terminates in a burner tip 7. The gas generated in the chamber 3 flows through the tube-6 to the tip 7, and a strainer S of .felt or other suitable material is provided at the inlet end of the tip 7 to relieve the discharging gas of its impurities.

ported when not in use, and is adapted to be filled through its upper open end, which is internally threaded to engage the ring 9. Vhen-.the chamber 10 is applied the open top thereof is closed yby the base of the body portion 1, thus preventing waste yof the generated gas. A gas tube 11 Opens through the base ot' the body 1 and extendsthereiirom to a. burner .tip 12 arranged in lproximity y'to the tip 7 in front of the'reflector 2, and a strainer 518 guards the yinner end lof the Atube 11 to `remove the impurities from the discharging gas.
Secured to the top olf the body 1 is a hook 141 for suspending the lamp from the cap of the wearer, and also secured to the top o1' the bodyL 1 is a water containing chamber 15 having a illing inlet 16 normally closed by a screw cap or other suitable closure 16, said closure having an air inlet 162L i'or an obvious purpose. The bottom of this water containing chamber which is formed by the top of the body portion 1,
'is provided with a'water discharge port 17 controlled by a needle valve 18 proyecting downward through said water reservoir and having a. threaded engagement therewith. The carbid chamber 10 has a tube 19 eX- tending upwardly from its bottom and provided with ports 2O and a valvev seat 21. The upper end of the tube 19 telescopically engages the lower end of a water supply pipe leading downward from the water reservoir 15, and through which tube extends a needle valve having a threaded engagement therewith, which valve 1s adapted to engage. the seat 2l to control the flow of water to the carbid through the ports 20. lt will thus be understood that the carbid generators may be supplied with water from a common reservoir, and that the [low of water may be 'cut otl or controlled as occasion may require.
In practice, it lis contemplated to keep one of the filled generators in reserve while the other is in operation and supplying gas through the communicating gas tube for ignition to furnish light. Uien the carbid in the operating generator has become eX- hausted, the other generator is set into action and will continue to supply gas for illumination, while the exhausted generator is being refilled. l claim An acetylene gas generator comprising a horizontal transverse body portion provided with a Central partition separating said body portion into a rear generating chamber and a front dead air chamber, a reflector forming the front Wall of the dead air chamber, a`closure at the rear of said body portion for said generating chamber,
a Water reservoir upon the top of said body portion and having a port communicating with said generating chamber, a second generating chamber detachably connected With the bottom of the body portion, a Water supply tube leading thereto through the dead air Chamber' from said Water reservoir, valves controlling` communication between the Water reservoir and the respective generating chambers, and burner tubes communicating with the generating chambers and extending through the dead air Chamber and reiiector.
