To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crowell, in the county of Foard and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in window operating devices, particularly for street or railroad coach windows, one of the objects being to simplify the operation of the mechanism for opening and closing windows of this type and for locking the same in any position.
Anotlier object resides in the provision of a window operating device embodying, among other characteristics, means whereby upon a rotative movement of an operating handle in opposite directions, devices may be operatively connected or disconnected'to provide for an automatic raising and lowering of the window or to lock the same in adjusted positions.
Another object resides in the provision of a window operating stated wherein all of the operating mechanism, except the operating handle, is'concealed in the framework of the car from the view of the operator, but to which access may be easily had for oiling, cleaning, repairing or the like, and in which the windows may-be raised, lowered or adjusted in open position with comparatively little or no effort on the part of the operator.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportion and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Referrin now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference charactor A indicates, in general, a portion of one side of the interior framework of a street or railroad car or other vehicle provided with spaced window openings in which are fitted the vertically sliding Window sashes 10. The spaces between the windows provide compartments 13 covered by .removable panels a and b and each window has the usual guide rails 11 for the guidance of the respective window sash 10 adapted to slide upwardly above the upper ends of the guide rails 11 into the respective compartment 13.
On opposite sides of the compartment 13 may be disposed the stops 14 to limit the upward sliding movement of the window sashes. These stops may construction but,,as shown, are in the form of pins covered with rubber or other resilient material to prevent undue noise and to give a cushioning action when the window sashes are brought into contact with the stops.
A dash-pot C is located in each compartment 13, designed to act against the upward movement of each window, to prevent the elevating means for the windows, when released, from raising the latter too rapidly. One form of device for this purpose may be in the nature of an'air cylinder 15 mountt To raise each window against the respective dash-pot G, I provide a weight D for each window. The weight may be in the nature of a relatively long metallic bar provided at its upper end with an eye 19 to which a cord, chain or other cable 20 may be connected and which passes over pulleys 21 and 22 mounted in' suitable brackets 21 and I 22', respectively, in the framework of the car. This cable 20 has spaced connections 23 with the eyes or other fastenings 24 in the upper edge of the respective window sash 10.

The web of the channel shaped guide E is provided with upper and lower rollers 28 and 29 adapted to reduce friction between the guide and the weight and thereby facilitate a free and easy sliding movement of the latter in its guide. The weight D is pro vided with a gear rack 30 arranged preferably midway of the side edges thereof, and alongside of the gear rack 30 is a ratchet the latter at one edge overlapping the outer edge of one of the sides of the guide E, as shown particularly in Fig. 2 for the purpose of equally distributing the pressure of the weight D on the rollers 28 and 29 and for the further purpose of facilitating an even guiding movement of the weight in its guide.
'The weight D is held normally against downward movement by a suitable trip de vice. T 0 this end, a trip arm 34 is swingingly mounted on a pivot 35 journaled in a hanger 37 depending from a bearing 38. This bearing 38 is fixed to the plate 25 by pins 36 projecting from the bearing through suitable openings in plate 25 and by screw or other fastenings 40. A pawl 32 is pivotally secured at 33 to one end of the trip arm and this pawl is preferably case hardened and engaged by a spring 41 adapted to force the same normally in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet rack 31 on the weight D to prevent accidental downward movement of the latter. A spring 42 is connected to an ear 43 on the trip arm 34 and to a lug 44 on the aforesaid fixed bearing 38 whereby the trip arm as-v sumes such a position as to cause the pawl 32 to assume operative relation with the weight D for the purposes already stated.
A shaft 39 is journaled in said fixed bearing 38 and in the casing plates 25 and 26. An operating shaft 48 is journaled in the plates and 26. These shafts 39 and. 48 are connected together and to the weight D by a suitable gear mechanism. For instance, a gear45 is keyed on the shaft 39 and disposed to normally mesh with the teeth of the aforesaid gear rack 30 on the weight D. A pinion 46 is also keyed on the shaft 39 adjacent said gear 45 and is adaptedto mesh with a gear 47 keyed on the operating shaft 48'.
The operating shaft projects forwardlyslightly beyond the front casing. plate 25 and through an opening formed by the semicircular openings a and Z) in the abutting on the rear face ends of the respective removable panels a and Z) of the car frame, projecting slightly beyond said panels. An operating handle 49 is loosely connected to the projecting end of the operating shaft 48, the handle having an integral collar 48 loosely embracing said operating shaft.
A wheel 50 is secured to or formed with the collar 48 and it is provided with a tripping pin 51 adapted to slidably operate in a curved slot 52 in the front casing plate 25 through which said tripping pin projects and which also projects through a curved slot 52 formed in the aforesaid trip arm 34 provided with a throat 53 forming a shoulder 54.
The panels a and b may be cut out to form a recess 55 between the inner faces thereof and the front plate 25 in which recess 55 the aforesaid wheel 50 is located and thereby concealed within the framework of the .car. A ratchet wheel 56 is keyed on the operating shaft 48 immediately back of said wheel 50 and is therefore also located in said recess 55. A dog 57 is pivoted at 58 of said wheel50 and held normally in mesh with the teeth of said ratchet 56 by means of a suitable spring 59 connected thereto and loosely connected at one end to the aforesaid tripping pin 51 of said wheel 50'. This pin 51 is further connected by a spring 60'which has connection therewith and with the plate 25, suitable fastenings'62 securing said spring 60 to the plate 25. The purpose of this spring 60 is to maintain the operating handle 49 normally in a substantially vertical position and to maintain the pin 51 normally adjacent the throat 53 of the trip arm 34.
The spring 59 referred to is adapted to normally hold the pawl 57 in engagement with the ratchet wheel 56 onthe operating shaft 48 so that upon swinging movement of the operating lever to the right the lever which is-loosely mounted onthe shaft 48 may becaused to connect positively with said shaft 48 through the instrumentality of said ratchet 56 and the pawl 57 and there by upon rocking or rotative' movement given to the operating shaft 48 cause the rotation of the gear 47 keyed on the operating shaft 48. The gear wheel 47, being in mesh with the pinion 46 on the shaft 39, gives rotation to the shaft 39 and to the gear 45 keyed on the shaft 39 and thereby effects a lifting of the weight D to lower the window because of the gear 45 meshing with the gear rack 30 on the weight D.
The window may be lowered step by step, or entirely lowered, according to the manipulation of the handle 49 By oscillating intermittently ratchet wheel 56 and thereby rotate the shaft 48 step by step and, by virtue of the gear connection between the shafts 48 and 39, cause upward movement of the weight D a consequent step by step lowering of the window, whereby partly lowered to an adjusted position or entirely lowered by a step It is preferred, however, when it is desired to entirely close the window, to give the operating handle 49 a complete swing to the right so that the gear mechanism between the shafts 48 and 39 and the weight D will cause the latter to travel the'limit of its movement under the influence of the gear mechanism to thereby completely close the window.
The swinging movement to the right of the operating handle 49 is limited by the engagement of the tripping pin 51 of the wheel 50 with the lower ends of the slots 52' and 52' in the casing plate 25 and trip arm 34, respectively. Immediately upon release of the operating handle 49 thespring 60 will cause the operating handle and the partsactuated thereby to assume positions.
To raise the window the weight D must be released by the pawl 32 of the trip arm 34 and the pawl 57 must beheld from holding their normal engagement with the ratchet wheel 56 on the handle collar 48. To disconnect the pawl 32 from the ratchet handle49 is-grasped and turned from its normally substantially vertical position to the left, which will give a rotative move- .ment to the wheel 50 and a consequent shifting of the tripping pin 51 toward the upper end of the curved slot 52 in the plate 25 and also toward the upper end of the slot 52 in the trip arm 34. To simply release the pawl 32 from engagement with the ratchet bar of .the weight D is not sufiicient because of the gear connection between the weight D and the shafts 39 and 48. In a window operating device, a frame, a window sash vertically slidable in the frame, a weight operatively connected to the window sash, a swingingly mounted handle disposed normally in a vertical plane, and connections between the handle and the weight whereby movements of the handle between its normal and vertical position and the limit of its swing in one direction will permit movement of the weight to raise the window to any desired extent and whereby upon movement of the handle between its normal vertical position and the opposite limit of its swing will permit the weight to move in the opposite direction to lower the window to any desired extent.

holding means, and effect a step by step downward movement of the weight toraise the window step by step and whereby a quick backward and forward movement of the handle between its normal vertical posi tion and the opposite limit of its swing will efi'ect a step'by step upward movement of the weight and thereby permit the window to lower step by step.

In a window operating device, a frame, a window sash vertically slidable in the frame, a weight vertically slidable in the frame and operatively connected to the window sash whereby the window sash is raised and lowered according to the direction of movement of the weight, a trip arm to hold the weight against accidental downward movement, and means, including a handle, operable to raise the weight to lower the sash, said handle being operable to simultaneously release said trip arm from holding engagement with the weight and to actuate said weight raising means to permit downward movement of the weight to raise the window.
5. In a window operating device, a frame, a window sash vertically slidable in the frame, a weight vertically slidable in the frame and operatively connected to the window sash whereby the window sash is raised and lowered, according to the direction of movement of the weight, means to hold the weight and thereby prevent downward movement of the weight, and means operable to raise the weight to lower the sash, and including a pawl and ratchet mechanism to simultaneously release said holding means and said weight raising means to lower the weight and raise the window.

In a window operating device, a frame, a window sash vertically slidable in the frame, a weight vertically slidable in the frame and operatively connected to the window sash, whereby the window sash is raised and lowered according to the direction of movement of the weight, a trip arm-journaled in the frame and held normally in engagement with the weight to prevent downward movement of the latter, and means operable to raise the weight to permit the sash to lower and also operable to simultaneously release said trip arm from operativeconnection with the weight and also release said weight raising means to inactive operation so as to lower the weight and thereby raise the window.
7. In a window operating device, a frame,
a window sash vertically slidable in the frame, a weight vertically slidable in the frame and operatively connected to the window sash whereby the window sash is raised and lowered according to the direction of movement of the weight, a gear rack on the weight, a ratchet rack on the weight, a trip arm pivotally mounted in the frame and carrying a pawl :adapted to normally engage said ratchet rack to prevent accidental downward movement of the welght, a gear mech- 1 anisnrmounted in the frame and having operable connection with said gear rack to raise the weight to permit the sash to lower, and means operatively connected to said gear mechanism and to said trip arm to disconnect the trip arm pawl from the ratchet rack and to permit inactive operation of the gear mechanism so as to lower the weight and thereby raise the window and subse quently operable to throw the trip arm pawl into engagement with the ratchet rack and to positively actuate the gear mechanism to raise the weight and thereby permit the window to lower.

In a window operating device, a frame, a window sash vertically slidable in the frame, a weight vertically slidable in the frame and operatively connected to the window sash, means to hold the weight against accidental downward movement and thereby prevent accidental raising of the window, a rotative shaft journaled in the frame, a gear mechanism operatively connecting the weight and the said shaft, a handle loosely connected to said shaft, a pawl and ratchet to positively connect said handle to said shaft whereby upon operation of the handle in one direction said shaft is given a rotative movement to operate the gear'mecha nism and thereby raise the weight to permit I the window to lower and means whereby upon operation of the handle in the opposite direction said holding means is disconnected the influence of the falling movement ofthe weight and thereby raise the window.

In a window operating device, a frame, a Window sash vertically slidable in the frame, a weight vertically slidable in the frame and operatively connected to the window sash whereby the window sash is raised and lowered according to the direction of movement of the weight, means to prevent accidental downward movement of the weight, means operable to raise the weight to permit the sash to lower and means to simultaneously release the aforesaid holding means and said weight raising means to thereby lower the weight and raise the window and subsequently operable to actuate said weight raising means to raise the weight and thereby permit the window to lower and means connected to the window sash to control the speed of upward movement of the same.

sash to raise and lower according to the direction of movement of the weight, means for holding the weight against accidental downward movement, means to release said weight and to actuate said releasing means to entirely raise the window or raise it step by step, means operable to raise said weight to permit the window to lower entirely or step by step, and means connected to the sash to control the speed of upward movement of the sash.

In a window operating device, a frame, a window sash slidable in the frame, a weight slidable in the frame and operatively connected to the window sash, a gear rack on said weight, spaced shafts rotatively mounted in the frame, a gear mechanism connecting the shafts and operatively conratchet also disconnected so nected to said gear rack, a handle loosely connected to one of said shafts and lying normally in a substantially vertical plane, means operable to lock the handle to the shaft to which it is connected so that upon movement of the handle in one direction 'said gear mechanism will raise the weight and thereby .permit the window sash to lower, means'to hold the weight against accidental downward movement, and means to simultaneously release said weight holding means and to permit inactive operation of said gear mechanism so as to permit the weight to move downward and thereby raise the window.
13. In a window operating device, a window sash vertically slidable in the frame,
a weight vertically slidable in the frame and operatively connected to the window sash, means to raise the weight to permit the sash to lower, means for holding the weight against accidental downward movement, and means to simultaneously release said holding means and render the weight raising means operatively'inactive with relation to the weight sooas to permit lowering of the latter and a consequent raising of the sash.

In a window operating device, a frame, a window vertically slidable in the frame, a weight vertically slidable in the frame and operatively connected to the window sash, and means, including a swingingly mounted handle whereby upon'swinging movement of said handle within certam limits on one side of the axis on which the handle is swingingly mounted, the weight may move upwardly to lower the sash and when the handle isswung within certain limits on the opposite side of the axis on which it is swingmgl mounted, the weight may move downward y to raise the window sas 15.
