WATER-FAUCET.
Application filed February 25, 1915. Serial No. 80,503.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. Doon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Water-Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
rIhis invention relates to dispensing faucets, the object in view being to produce a faucet embodying a novel construction and relative arrangement of parts for seating and unseating the controlling valve of the faucet, whereby the valve may be operated both by hand and by pressure exerted on a certain element thereof by a glass or any other receptacle while positioned under the discharge end of the faucet. The construction which will be hereinafter particularlyl described enables a person to lill, for example, a glass or tumbler by holding the same under the discharge nozzle of the faucet and without requiring the use of the other hand.
Vith the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in the novel construc- V tion, combination and arrangement of parts,
as herein described, illustrated and claimed.
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical longitudinal section through a faucet embodying the present invention.
The body of the faucet indicated at 1 is of the usual 'tubular formation and is shown as terminating in a downwardly deflected spout 2, the nozzle being threaded at 8 to enable the same to be attached to any desiredsupply such as a pipe or reservoir.
Arranged centrally within the tubular bodyv 1 is a valve seat l and cooperating therewith is a valve 5, the latter being fixedly mounted upon and carried by a valve stem 6 which is of sufficient length to work through openings in the top and bottom walls of the body 1 and project beyond the same so as to be connected at one end to a hand lever 7 arranged on the upper side of the faucet, said lever being pivotally connected at 8 to the valve stem 6 and being pivotally attachedvat 9 to a post 10 extending upwardly from the top of the faucet.
Another post 1l extends downwardly from the bottom of the faucet and has connected thereto by a pivot 12 a second lever 13 which underlies the faucet body and is connected by a pivot 14 to the lower extremity of the valve stem 6. At its free end the lever 13 is provided with a notch 15 or teriorly of the faucet body. In order to accommodate the valve stem 6 and provide 'for packing the same, the body 1 is provided with upwardly and downwardly extending tubular bosses 19 and 20 which are threaded to receive packing nuts or glands 21. Within each gland is a packing ring 22 of rubber or other flexible material which Specification of Letters `Patent. VPatented Fgb, p20, 1917, v
by the tightening of the nuts or glands 21 may be compressed as tightly as may be necessary around the stem 6 to prevent leakage.
In operation, the receptacle `17 is placedk under the discharge nozzle of the faucet and in engagement with the free end of the lever 13. Then an upward pressure of the receptacle 17 results in unseating the valve 5 and permitting a flow of liquid through the faucet. As soon as the receptacle 17 is lowered, the flow is cut off by reason of the fact that the valve 5 is automatically returned to its closed position by means of the spring 18. Additionally, when both hands of the operator are free, the receptacle 17 may be held under the faucet in one hand and the valve opening lever 7 may be manipulated bythe other hand. The faucet may thus .be operated in either of two ways according to the convenience or requirement of the operator.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim The combination with a tubular faucet body having upwardly and downwardly extending postsl and upwardly and downi wardly extending tubular bosses, of a valve seat within said tubular body, a valve cof-,perating therewith, asingle valve stem extending on both sides of the valve body through said upwardly and downwardly ex- Itending tubular bosses and projecting beextremity of said valve stem, and a second In testimony whereof I aHiX my signa- Valve operating leyer connected with the ture in presence of tWo Witnesses.
