HORSE COLLAR PROTECTOR. APPLICATION FILED SEPT-13, 1915.

FRANK n. wELcH, or ALTUS, OKLAHOMA.
HORSE-COLLAR PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 15, 1915. Serial No. 50,844.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. WVELOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altus, in the county of Jackson and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horse- Collar Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a horse collar, and more particularly to the class of horse collar protectors.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a collar of this character wherein one of the seams without the same is formed with a casement receiving therein a wire spring yoke which materially reinforces the collar, and on the throat point of the said collar is arranged a wearing flap for the pole strap so that the cutting through the collar at this point by the frictional contact of the strap therewith is prevented.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a collar of this character wherein the constructionthereof is novel in form to assure maximum wearing qualities, strength and durability.
A further object of theinvention is the provision of a collar of this character which is simple in construction, protected at the points of strain thereon, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a collar constructed in accordance with the invention. i 1
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the same. 7
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough.
F ig. A is a perspective view of the wire spring. a
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the wearing flap and fastener therefor.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing a slight modification of the horse collar protector.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the collar comprises a padded body A formed as usual with hip wings B, neck rim C -joined to the body A through the medium of inner and outer seams 5 and 6, respectively, the latter seam being formed with a casement 7 in which is received a wire spring yoke 8 which reinforces the body A of the collar.
The body A of the collar is open diametrically opposite the throat side thereof and is adjustably connected together through the medium of the connections 9 of the ordinary well-known construction.
At the throat side ofthe body A of the collar interiorly thereof is a wearing flap or section 10, preferably made from leather, and has passed centrally therethrough a screw or bolt 11,- the head of which is engaged in a substantially diamond-shaped washer 12 formed with down-turned spurs 1.8 at its corners to bite into the flap or section 10, and this screw or bolt 11 is passed through the body A of the collar at the throat and has engaged thereon a hook member 14 which is held upon the screw and has its hook overlying the seam 6, while the opposite end of the member 1&- lies against the rim C of the body A of the collar. It is of course understood that the hames are placed about the collar in the usual well-known manner when the body A of said collar is fastened about the neck of the animal. The flap or section 10 prevents wear on the throat portion of the col larby the pole strap when engaged therewith, while the wire yoke 8 materially reinforces the collar.
In Fig. 6 there is shown a slight modification of the invention wherein the wearing flap or section 10v is mounted within the collar in identically the same manner as the wearing flap or section 10, with the wearing plate 12 superimposed upon the section 10, and through both of which passes a bolt 11 which has engaged therewith a spring wire clip 13 coiled about the wire yoke 8, as shown, and also has a portion 1.4: surrounding the bolt 11" which carries the usual adjustable nut 15 thereon.
From the foregoing description, taken in Patented Feb. 20, 1917.
connection with the accompanying drawmg, the construction and manner of use of the device will be clearly understood, and
therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted. i
What is claimed is V The combination With a horse collar having a yoke casement exteriorly thereof and a spring yoke therein of an attachment comprising a flexible Wearing section disposed against the inner face of the closed end of the collar, a rigid Wearing plate superimposed upon the section and having a central aperture, a bolt member passed through the aperture, and also through the collar and having its head flush with the exposed surface of the Wearing plate, a. clip adjustably engaged on the bolt member and acting against the body 'of the collar and the said yoke casement to hold the Wearing section and plate inposition relative to each other and also to the collar, and spurs bent from the Wearing plate and engageable in the flexible section to prevent the turning thereof. 7
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
FRANK H. 'WVELGH.
lVitnesses E. C. TEAPE, R. LEE VVHITE.
