Description

EDWARD L. TAYLOR.

J Kama I w A i M im UNITED S'rs'rns Parana @rrrcn iWiPROVEMENTlN SOUNDlNG-BQARDS FOR PIANGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,686, dated December 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. TAYLOR, of
Jersey City Heights, in the county of Hudson and State of New J ersey, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Sounding- Board Platform for Pianos; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the aocon'ipanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top view of my improved sounding-board plattorin, partly in section, through the line a 1', Fig. 2, to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical. section of the same taken through the line 1 y, Fig. 1.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved soulnling-board platform for pianos, which shall be so constructed and arranged as to increase the tone of the piano, and it consists in the sounding-boald platform constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
A B G are three boards, similar in form, and the upper and lower ones of which are of equal size, the middle one being made narrower, as shown in Fi g. l. The ends of the three boards A B G are separated by narrow strips of timber D,
to which the said ends are secured. The side edges of the platform areincased with boards E, as shown in Fig. 1, which boards are attached to the edges of the bottom and top boards A O.
The forward edge of the platform is recessed sufiieiently to allow space for the pedals to project down in front of said platform. By making the central board B a little narrower than the top and bottom-boards (J A, the said board B will be free to vibrate, the air passing in and out through the spaces between the pieces D, casings E, and the edges of the board B. The piano is placed upon the platform with its legs standing upon the four corners of said platform. The legs of the piano should be shortened, to keep the said piano at the proper height. Casters should be placed beneath the four corners of the platiorm to enable the piano to be moved about with the same facility as an ordinary piano. The casters or other supports are necessary to raise the platform from the floor to obtain the proper vibrations. The sounding-board platform thus constructed is adapted for use with either grand or square pianos, and may be used either with or without the center souiulinghoard B.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A souiuling-board platform, A B C D E, con structed substantially as herein shown and described, to adapt it to receive a piano, as and for the purpose set forth, whether the center-board be used or not.
