Be it known that we,'GEoRGE E. HERR- MANN and BENJAMIN W. TUoKnR,`citizens of the United States, and residents of Morristown, county of Morris, State of New Jersey, and South Orange, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, respectively, have invented certain new andfuseful Improvements in Barrels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates lmore particularly to metallic barrels comprising a plurality of members having interlocking parts.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a barrel or other container in which each member is provided with flanges along the edges thereof, the flanges along one edge being provided with a groove and the other with a tongue or rib which is adapted to fit into the groove of the liange of the next adjacent stave or member, and each flange being provided with spaced depressed and projecting portions which serve to further interlock the parts and also to strengthen the anges against spreading at the joints, thus adapting the barrel or container to resist the strains or shocks to which such articles are subjected while in use.
Another objectof the invention is to provide a barrel or container which is simple in construction, which may be readily made and assembled, and which is adapted to hold various kinds ofvmaterial. v
A further object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means whereby the staves or members and the head or heads of the barrel may be locked together and the ends of the barrel or container materially strengthened at its ends.
A still further object of the invention is to provide rib and groove connections between the head and the ends of the staves o1'. members.
With these and other objects in lview, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and willthen be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly broken away and partly in section, of one form of barrel or container embodying our invention.

While the invention is shown as applied more particularly to a bilged metallic barrel, it will b e understood that the invention is also applicable to barrels or other containers of various constructions.
The barrel body 10 comprises a of staves or members 11. These staves or members are curved and bilged centrally to provide a barrel body which is larger at the center than at the ends in order that the barrel when lying on its side may be readily that the section is taken on the line V-VI placed on its end or otherwise handled.
Each stave or member 11 is provided atvone edge with an inwardly extending flange 12 and along the other edge with an inwardly extending flange 13. The flange 13iis. pro-- vided vwith a depressed portion forming a tongue or rib 111, and the flange 12 is provided with a depressed portion 15 forming a band or member 28. 28 has two fiange portions 29 and 30, the latportion. rlhe flanges 12 and 13 have their outer edges formed with an angular portion 17 in order to prevent the sharp edge of the flange from being exposed, and this edge may be arranged at right angles to the fianges as shown, or in any other preferred manner.
Each flange is provided with spaced projecting portions 18 and 19. These portions are formed by forcing outwardly a part of each of the fianges 12 and 13 and the projecting portions 18 extend in one direction while the projecting portions 19 extend in the opposite direction and alternate with each other so as to provide parts which project from opposite sides of the flanges. rThese projecting portions 18 and 19 are angular in formation and have their largest portion near the body of the stave and gradually taper toward the outer edges of the fianges 12 and 13, and each projecting portion forms a groove or recess so that the projecting portions of one stave may enter the groove or recessed portions of the projections of the stave next adjacent thereto when the staves are brought together. These projecting portions by interlocking as they do, prevent relative lengthwise movement of the staves or members with relation to each other and serve further to strengthen the flanges and to assist in preventing the same from spreading or opening at the joint and serve further to assist in locking the flanges and staves in a direction opposite to the ribs let and groove portions 15.
A head 20 may be located at either or both ends of the barrel or container body, and each head has its body portion 21 concaved or forced inwardly to rest against the shoulders formed by the ends of the flanges 12 and 13, the latter serving in addition to said supports as strengthening ribs for the barrel body. Each head has an outwardly extending flange 22 and is adapted to be seated in a croze or groove formed by the offset portion 23 of the staves or members. The ange 22 is provided with a grooved part 24 which is continuous, and said groove of each head is adapted to receive a tongue or rib 25 located at one of the ends of the staves or members 11, the said staves or members when they are put together forming substantially a continuous annular rib around the head. A wire or other element 26 is located in the groove formed by the ribs 25 of thestaves, and this wire when tightened will serve to rigidly hold the ends of the barrel staves to the head cooperating therewith. The members or staves 11 have substantiallyv straight outer ends 27 which lie against the flanges 22 of the heads 20, and fitting about the ends of the staves and thel flange of each head is a compression This band or member ter being joined to the flange 28 by a hori- Zontally extending portion 31 and arranged to lie against the inner surface of the flange 22 of the head and have its-inner edge resting against the outer surface of the body 21 of said head. The flange 30 may be angular for a part of its length and with the flange 28 forms an annular chamber or recess to receive the ange 22 and ends of the barrel staves. The band may be divided and has an offset part 32 terminating in a short skirt portion 33 which extends lengthwise of the staves or members for a short distance. A wire or band 34 is located under the shoulder of the band or member 28 so that when its ends are joined by twisting or otherwise, the band or member 28 may be compressed to further hold the staves or members and heads together and in such a way that the band will materially assist in strengthening the ends of the barrel.
rllhe barrel or container body may be bound intermediate the ends thereof and for this purpose various means may be employed. As shown, each stave or member is 9o provided with a transverse groove which when the staves are put together form sub stantially annular grooves around the barrel or container body. A wire band 34a is located in one of the grooves, and a second wire or band 34h is located in the other groove, so that when the two bands are joined by twisting the ends or otherwise, the body will be bound intermediate the ends and thereby materially strengthened.
In Figs. 8 and 9, the members or staves 35 are substantially the same as already described, and the fianges instead of having the projecting portions alternately arranged and projecting from opposite sides of the flanges they project from one side only. ln this case, the projecting portions 36 of one flange enter grooves forme-d by the projecting portions of the flange of the next adjacent stave, otherwise the construction is the same as that already described.
Figs. 10 and 11 show inwardly projecting portions instead of laterally projecting portions which do not interlock or extend one into the other. In this case the projecting portions 37 along one stave are opposed to the projecting portions 38 of the flanges of the next stave and are formed by depressing the stave from the outside thereof. These projecting portions serve in this case principally to strengthen the inwardly extending flanges and to prevent the joint from spreading under the usual strains or knocks while the barrel or container is in use.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that a 12a strong, eflicient and inexpensive barrel is provided; that a simple and efficient joint is provided by which the staves or members may be interlocked in two directions; that simple means is provided whereby the interlas locking portions may be materially strengthened and the joint prevented from opening or spreading while the barrel or other container is in use; that simple and efficient means is provided whereby a rib and groove connection is formed between the ends of the barrel staves or members and the head or heads; and that simple means is provided whereby the several parts may be locked together and one part made to assist in strengtheningthe other.
Having lthus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A barrel or other container. having its body comprising a plurality of members each having ianges extending inwardly lengthwise thereof and along its edges for the greater part of its length, said flanges having parts thereof forming rib and groove portions to lock the flanges together, and
spaced interlocking portions located on the flanges and formed therefrom.
