This invention relates to improvements in tools for use principally in the grindingof valves of internal combustion engines, and
my special object is to devise ahand tool provided with a bit for engaging the valve and means for oscillating the bit,- whlch means will permit of convenient oscillation of the bit only through approximately a half revolution. It is also an object to produce a tool which'may be conveniently operated to manipulate valves or other parts as to pro hibit the use of other tools commonly em ployed for the purpose;

Referring to the drawing, the tool comprises a longitudinal member or post 2 on the head of which is secured a disk 4, the latter being fixed to the post by means of a pin 6 extending through a hub formed on one side of the disk. On the end of the post at the opposite side of said disk is journaled a sleeve 8, the end of the post being upset to retain said'sleeve in place, and a pressure blocklO is carried by said sleeve, being bored to fit the same in tight relation. r

In the grinding ofthe valves of explosive engines itiswell known that continuous rotation of thevalve is objectionablefor the the sleeve andis provided with a terminal reason that the contacting surfaces of'the valve and'valve seatoften become scored by the travel of 'anoccasional' large particleof grit or emery, entirely around the valve seat.

It is 7 therefore desirable that the; valve be merely oscillated instead of continuously rotated in order that such particles of grit may be ground and crushed before the position of the valve is materially changed.
- While this desirability is recognized, the
workman in grinding the valves by means of the usual tools, such as a brace or breast bit,
will frequently endeavor to speed the operation by continuouslyrotating the valve in stead of exercising the care and patience necessary to produce the better result by oscillating the toolfas above described. With my improved form of tool it is obviously impracticable to use it forthe purpose of imparting continuous rotation to'the bit, be-' ceause of the post 2 connecting the endsof the yoke 12 and standing in the way of the workmans arm after having moved the tool through approximately a half revolution.
It is necessary therefore, for the workman to perform his work by simply oscillating the tool, and as often as it is necessary to shift the position of the valve, he will lift the yoke or crank arm 12, and move the same to alter the relative engagement of the teeth 16 post and bit must remain stationary, and

It will of course beunderstood that the use of the device is not confined to the manipulation of valve grinding bits but that the same is well adapted for'use in other relations where the only modification necessary is in the character of the tool proper applied to the end of the post 2.
