VBe it known that I, CHESTER L. BALDWIN, a citizen `of the United States', and a resident of Almond, in the county. of Portage and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Grinding-Tool for Gas-'Engine Valves, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a tool for enabling gas engine valves to be ground on their seats.
The invention has for its general objects to improve and simplify the construction and operation of, tools of this character so as to be comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eliicient in use and readily adjustable for various sizes and Jforms of valves.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hand tool having` a valve-engaging'head connected with a stem or shaft to which rotation is imparted by one hand of theoperator through suitable means, while pressure is exerted through the tool on the valve by the other hand so as to hold the valve in grinding relation to its seat.
Another object of the invention is the provision of adjustableand removable engaging means on the head of the tool and also steadying devices on the head which are adjustable to engage with the valve.
l Another object is the provision of a spirally threaded shaft or stem with which engages a threaded sleeve that is reciprocated on the stem so as to rotate the latter alternately in opposite directions to effect the grinding action.
`With these objects in view, and others as will`r appear as the description' proceeds, the invention comprises irious novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinvafter and `set forthwith particularitv in the.

Referring to the drawing, A designates the head of the tool which is a dislolike bodv havingrin its under side guideways 1 and 2 a diametrical line with a partition Sbetween them, the walls of the guideways being undercut to provide shoulders 4. In the guideways are bits 5 and 6 which slide inwardly and outwardly by the turning of a rotary element 7 which y has rightand left hand threads 8 and 9 that engage in threaded openings 10 and l11 in the bits 5 and 6, respectively. The middle portion 12 of the threaded element 7 is smooth and reduced to provide shoulders 13, and this reduced portion 12 is journaled in an opening 14 in the partition 3.` Thus bv turning the threaded element 7 the bits 5 and 6 can be moved 'inwardly or outwardly so that the valve-engaging portions 15 of the bits will be in proper` relation to engage in sockets or the like in the top of the valve to be ground.
The head A is adapted to be rotated bv a shaft or stem B which is connected with the head by a universal joint C, which-oint C consists of a block or connecting'element 16 which is set between lugs 17 onthe head A and united therewith by journals or pins 18 fastened to the block 16, and spanning the block are the bifurcations 19 of the stem B, there being a in 20 passing through the block 16 and ifurcations 19 to hingedlv connect the block-with the stem. The pin 20 is disposed at right-angles to the iournals 18, so that universal movement is provided between'the head A and stein B. The stein B has a spiral groove or thread 21 of coarse pitch, and slidable longitudinally of the stem is a sleeve 22 that has a pin 23 that projects into the groove 21, so that as the sleeve 22 moves up and down on the stem B the latter is rotated in one direction and then in the other, there being on the sleeve 22 a handle 24 whereby the operator can conveniently actuate the sleeve. On the upper end of the stem B is a rest or handle 25 that has a central metallined opening 26 through which the upper end of the stem passes, said upper end being reduced to form a shoulder 27 that is engaged'by the handle A opposite direction.
To steady the head A with respect to the valve the head is provided with screws or equivalent devices 29 which are threaded in openings 30 in the head, the upper ends 31 ofthe screws being knurled so that they l can'be easily turned.

I.In the bit 36 is a chamber 41 that contains a spring 42, which springl presses upwardly a key 43 in the form of a ball, sol that it will enter the` recess 35, whereby 'lateral displacement of the bit 36 1n the guideway l is prevented. The conversion of the tool from a single to a double bit valve-engaging means is very simply ac-y complished and yet the tool is reliable in operation when used in either manner.

method of operation and of the device` shown will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illusy trative and that such changes may be when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
