zen of the United States, residing at Bonesteel, in the county of Gregory and State 5 of South Dakota, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Horse-Detachers, of which the following is a specificaevener bar, and which may beappliedto the t'onguesof all wagons or other vehicles.

The evener bar, which is designated 36, as illustrated in Fig. 4, is formed upon its upper and lower face with spherical -or hemispherical pivot studs 36 which, as illustrated, are cast or otherwise formed in one piece with base plates 37 attached to the evener bar, these spherical or hemispherical studs fitting within the sockets 17 and 21, respectively, so that the evener bar has free oscillatory movement as upon a pivot.
Attached to the extremity of the handle member 30 of the eccentric clip 29 is a rod which, however, may be in the form of a flexible connection, this rod extending rearward and being connected to a flexible connection 39 passing upward over a suitable pulley or other support disposed at the This flexible connection may pass up through the dashboard or through the bottom of the wagon and may be connected to a. lever either at the front or rear of the wagon. I do not wish to be limited to any particular manner of mounting this operative connection consisting of the members 38 and 39 as this will vary with different types of vehicles, and whiflie trees are of course to be connected to the evener bar 35. Ordinarily the evener bar will be held, in pivoted position upon the tongue by the engagement in the sockets 17 and 21, the strip 16 being held in operative position by means of the U-shaped locking member 32. Now in case the'draft animals run away or it is desired to detach them from the tongue for any other reason, it is only necessary to pull upon the connection 38 which will draw downward and rearward upon the member 30, thus, after the eccentric clip 29 has turned upon its center, releasing the locking member 32 and permit-v ting the springs 33 to draw the upper end of the locking member forward. This entirely releases the locking strip 16 and the pull ofthe draft animals upon the evener bar pulls it out of the sockets 17 and 21 and frees it entirely from engagement with the tongue. Inasmuch asthe forward end'of the tongue is simply inserted through an opening in the neck yoke, itis obvious that the animals will be completely released from the vehicle and that the vehicle will come to a stop:
While my advice is particularly adapted to poles or tongues, it is obvious that like means may be used in connection with the cross bar of a pair of shafts and the whiilie tree be released from this cross bar by the same means illustrated. Of course under these circumstances provision must be made for releasing the holdback straps from engagement with the shafts so that the forward movement of the draft animal will detach it from the shafts.
lVhile I have illustrated certain details of construction which I have found to be very effective in practice, I do not wish to be limited to these as it is obvious that many changes in these details mightbe made without departing from the spirit of the invention. The ball and socket joint formed by the engagement of the members 36 in the sockets 17 and 21 affords a free movement for the evenor bar and at the same time perinits a ready detaclnnent of the evcnerbar from its'engagement with. the irons 16 and 19 as soon as the wheel 16 is released. This is of course very important inasmuch as any impediment to the complete release of the evener bar would tend to prevent proper U action of the mechanism.
It is obvious that this device may be attached to tongues already constructed with only the necessity of drilling holes for the proper boltsfor rivets whereby to hold the plates 12 and 19 to the upper face of the tongue. It is also obvious that it may be attached to various forms of tongues without material change. 7
Having described the invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a tongue, of a plate attached to the upper face of the tongue and formed with a concave socket at its 'middle and with upwardly extending flanges at its forward end and with an up wardly extending stud between said flanges, a member hingedly connected at its rear end to the tongue, archingover said plate and formed with a concave socket in alinement with the socket in the plate and also formed with a perforation for the reception of said stud, an eveneribar having'sphe'rical trunnions normally disposed in said sockets, a U-shapedlocking member, an eccentrically pivoted member operatively mounted upon the under face of the tongue and connected to said, U-shaped locking member and hav-- ing an operating extension, said eccentric when turned into onerposition drawing the the upper face of the tongue and having a concave socket and having upwardly ex' tending lateral flanges at 1ts forward end and an upwardly extending stud between the flanges, the flanges'being notched, a
