Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA M. Trrunnow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lever Set-lVorks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has for its primary object a peculiarly simple and eflicient' mechanism for adjusting the feed rolls of a re-s'aw machine, the same providing for exceeding nicety of adjustment of the rolls within a wide range both independently and also in unison to secure self-centering. In the accompanying drawing and in the description based thereon is set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same 'being susceptible, however, of embodiment in other and varied constructional forms Without departing from the essence of the invention or sacrificing its material advantages. In the drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view of the feed roll mounting and set works;

Fig. i is a vertical transverse section on the line 4.4L of Fig. 2.
The feed rolls 1111 arranged at one side of the saw line are mounted upon the carriage 12 for moving toward and from said line, while the feed rolls 13, 13 are mounted upon the carriage 14 for similar movement. The carriage 12 has secured thereto in fixed relation a rack bar 15 and the carriage 14c is provided with a rack bar 16, these two rack bars being in superjacent planes and meshing respectively withpinions 17 and 18 co-axially mounted, the former upon a tubular shaft 19 and the latter upon a solid shaft 20, the shaft 19 being mounted as a sleeve loosely about the shaft 20. Fixed upon the shaft 19 of the pinion 1.5 is a lilublike member 21 provided with radially arranged equally spaced sockets 22, 22 22 and 22. The hub member 21 is shown as having radial arms provided with sockets but the form of said member is immaterial and it may be in the form of a notched disk, the notches being the functional equivalent of the sockets. The shaft 20 of the pinion 18 is provided with a similar hub member 23 having radially opening sockets 24, 24 245 and 2%.
The spaced relation of the sockets of the two hub members is such that the angular movement of the hub member equal to the distance between two of the sockets is sufficient to move its feed roll carriage onequarter its entire range of movement toward and from the saw line, wherefore it follows that if a suitable member be engaged within one of the sockets and the hub turned until said socket reaches the position formerly occupied by the next adjacent socket the feed roll will have been advanced or retracted, as the case may be, a distance corresponding to one-quarter its total permissible travel. For the purpose of causing such angular movement of the hub members and shafts independently and also in unison suitable mechanism is employed and preferably that now to be described. Fixedly mounted and having the shaft 20 as a center are two sectors 25 and 26 arranged one above the other and having a toothed periphery indicated respectively at 27 and 28. Pivotally mounted about the same center are two levers 29 and 30, the former having a handle 31 and a sectorengaging latch 32 and also having a downwardly extending handle 33 and a conveniently situated finger piece 3st connected with the plunger @rod- 35, the inner end of which is attached to a plunger catch 36 adapted to engage within one of the sockets carried by the hub 21. larly provided with a handle 37 and a sector-engaging latch 38, and also with an upwardly extending handle 39, an adjacent finger piece 10, a plunger rod 41 and a plunger catch 4:2 for engagement within one of the recesses of the hub 23. The lever 30 is also provided with a snap pin 43 adapted to he dropped into engagement with the re cess l4; in the lever 29 when the levers are brought into superposed relation with the pin and recess in vertical alinement whereby to couple the two levers together.
lVhen the various parts of the set works are arranged with both the levers occupying an extreme position at the left hand of the sectors and with their plunger gages in engageinent with the sockets 22 and 2 1 the feed rolls will be equidistant from the saw line and in their position of greatest sepasocket 24 the carriage 11 and the feed rolls 13 may be advanced another quarter in the same manner. Obviously the advance may be finally made less than a quarter by permitting the latch 38 to engage the sector at any point intermediate the two extreme positions of the lever.
In the same manner the carriage 12 and the feed rolls may be advanced and retracted .in the same manner by the actuation of the lever 29 and its engagement with the successive sockets of the hub 21.
If it is desired to move the feed rolls toward and from the saw line in unison for self-centering, the two levers 29 and 30 are engaged respectively with the sockets 22 and 2 1 or 22' and 24, or 22 and 2 1 as the case may be. They are then brought into a position directly one above the other, the pin L3 is' snapped into the recess 4% coupling the I two levers together, the latch 32 of the lever 29 is released from engagement with the teeth 27 of the sector 25 and thereafter both levels and both sets of rolls are positioned in unison bythe manipulation of the lever 30 by means of its handle37 and latch 38.
In order that there may be no omission on r the part of the operator to release the latch 32 when the levers 29 and 40 are coupled together, provision is made whereby to insure such release, and thus insure against breakage. The latch is, for this purpose, provided with a furcated projection 32*, one
vprong of which overlies the-recess 44: when the latch is engaged with its sector and prevents the insertion of the pin 13; when the latch is released the recess is uncovered and the pin may enter the same through the space betweenv the prongs, holding the latch 32 in released position while the two lovers are coupled.
I claim:
1. In resaw set works, the combination with a pair of feed rolls arranged on the two sides of the saw line, a carriage for each roll movable along ways transversely of the saw line, 'acks connected with the carriages, toothed pinions coaxially mounted and meshing with the racks, a hub member secured to each pinion and providing spaced radially opening sockets, a lever pivoted about the axis of each pinion and including a releasable catch adapted to engage one of the sockets, a toothed sector traversed by each of the levers, a latch carried by each lever and adapted to engage the teeth of its sector, and a pin carried by one of the levers and adapted to snap into a recess liormed in the other lever whereby to couple the lovers at will to eflect sell centering adjustment.
2. In resaw set works, the combination with a pair of feed rolls arranged on the two sides of the saw line, a carriage for each roll movable along 'ays transversely of the saw line, racks connected with the carriages, toothed pinions coaXially mounted and meshing with the racks, a hub member socured to each pinion and providing spaced radially opening sockets, a lever pivoted about the aXis of each pinion and including a releasable catch adapted to engage one of the sockets, a toothed sector traversed by each of the levers, a latch carried by each lever and adapted to engage the teeth of its sector, and a pin carried by one of the lovers and adapted to snap into a recess formed in the other lever whereby to couple the lovers at will to effect seli centering adjustment, means carried by one of the latches and overlying the recess when engaged with its sector whereby to prevent the entrance of the pin and engaged by the pin when inserted to hold the latch out of engagement with its sector.
