UNIVERSAL JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 26), 1911?.
Application filedSeptember 16, 1914. Serial No. 861,931.
- To all whom it may concern:
further object is to provide a construction that can be oiled readily and efficiently. I
The characteristic features of the improvements are fully disclosed in the following descript on and the accompanying draws ings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva tion of a construction embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating a modified construction, Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line/1 4; ofFig. 1, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detached bearing stud or journal, and Fig. 6 is a detached bearing of modified construction.
The mechanism, inthe form thereof illustrated in the drawings, comprises'the similar coupling knuckles 1, .having'theyoke members or bifurcations 2 disposed. transversely to each other and yoked on a sub-' stantially cubical block 3 or 3,.pintles for.
As illustrated in Figs. 2, 4 and 5', the tles 4 have their inner ends turned to; rm channels 4* having curved surfaces concen trio with the, pintles axes, and 'similarly' b ev eled faces 4 adapted to engage so" as to -leave an open space or way 5 between'their truncated ends, each pintle containing an axial passage 4 with an angular outlet 4:? to the corresponding bearings 2 As illustrated in Fig. 2, studs 6, having the circular knife edges 6*, are screwed into the block 3 so as to engage the knife edges in the channels 4* to hold the pintles4 in place. These studs 6 are also provided with the passages 6 in alinement with the passage 5 for the introduction of Oilj-tO lubri- -cate the wearing parts, the oil flowing through the ings 2 7 As illustrated in Fig. 3, a,
may be used in place of the two studs shown in Fig. 2.
single 6 vided with the channels 4, having substantially conlcal sides in place of the channels '51 having substantially spherical sides.
Having described our invention, we claim :1 1. The combination of transversely -disposed yokes, channeled pintles journaled in the furcations of said yokes, the inner ends of said pintles being beveled and provided with notches," and a stud having an edge en;-
gaged "in" said notches and a channel com- 3 municating with the channels of said pintles.
2. The combination" .oftransversely disposed yokes, a block disposed within said yokes, channeled pintles extending through the bifurcations of said yokes into said" block, the inner ends of said pintlesbeing l beveled and provided with notches, and a stud-in saidblock having an edge engaged I.
