To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY GILL- INGHAM, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of "Kentville, in the Province of Nova Scotia, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Car-Doors, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway car doors and the objects of my invention are to render the door wind and water tight so that merchandise shipped in the car is not liable to -suffer in consequence of the weather, to obviate any .liability of the door becoming displaced due to jarring in the train, to simplify the construction and to peruit of the door being readily actuated witlf a minimum of labor and loss of time.
.With the above and other objects in view the invention consists essentially of the. improved constru'ction particularly described and set forth in the following specication and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.

.Referring tothe drawings, A represents a'railway car provided with the usual doorway 10 in the side thereof having its upper and lower edges 11 and 12 beveled downwardly and substantially parallel.
It will be seen that the upper beveled edge 11 terminates in asubstantial shoulder 13 designed to engage with the inner upper edge of the door 14 locking the same in position and preventing any liability of its excessive displacement'. inwardly, while the lower edge of the door may be provided with a` felt orlike resilient strip 15 adapted to intimately engage with the lower beveled edge 12 of the doorway and render the door when in a locked position wind and watertight.
The door 14 is secured to the lower end 16 of a combination hinge f provided inter mediate of its length with a connecting link 17, ivotally connecting the upper and lower eng 18 and 16 together, the former of which is provided with an overhanging guard 19 housing the roller- 20y rotatably mounted therein.
The roller 20 is designed toengage with the longitudinally extending beam 21 which is of substantially Z-shape in cross section.

The door lever 31 is of substantial U- shape, having. the free ends of the parallel arms provided with offsets 32 rotatably engaging the eye bolts 33 which pass through the sill 34 of the car, the said lever having a shank 35 provided. intermediate of its ends with an offset portion 36 designed to form a hand grip or step.
An orlfce 37 extends through the end of the shank and is adapted to slidably engage with the casing 24 of the locking device, and is further provided adjacent to one of its edges with a projection 38 having an orifice 39 therethrough adapted to register with the orifice 30 in the latch member 26 when the lever is in closed engagement with the door thereby facilitating in passing a wire or the like through thesaid orifices and seal-A ing the same to prevent tampering with the mechanism carried by the car.

A Wire is now` passed through the orifices 29 and 80 and a seal is attached to the ends thereof. In opening the door the seal is broken and the latch 26 manually ele ated when the lever 31' is rotated downwardly, resulting in the door assuming the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2; hanging directly vertically under the roller 20 so'that the slightest effort of the train man Will displace the door endwise giving access to the car. fWhen the door is open the 'oil'- set portion 36 of the shank 35 is' capable of being used as a sill step to facilitate entry into the car.
AAs many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
A railway car including door closing means includinga lever having a shank, a tapered head on the shank` a U shaped cxtension on said shank` angular projections .on the legs of the' U shaped portion, in-
turned lateral extensions on the ends of said legs` and straps on the car for pivotally holding said lateral extensions, said means adapted to close the car door when in upright position and to serve as a 'step when in downward position.
