siding at Lawrence, in the county of Doug" las and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W'riting-Charts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

rIhis invention relates tov new and useful improvements in writing charts, and the primary object of the invention is to provide means for holding a plurality of interchangeable and reversible sections having script letters on the opposite sides of the same that may be arranged to ,form expressions in script for a purpose ofvteaching penmanship or other studies of letters and words.

Another obj ect of this invention is to provide a writing chart of this character whereby the sections upon which the script letters are, may be easily and quickly interchanged or reversed to form new sentences or words if desired.

A further object of the invention is to provide a writing chart that is provided with compartments behind the section holder to .ahold additionalv script sections so .that they may be easily located when desired for use.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which vis easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture and'one which will be very eiiicient in operation.

With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the speciiication and claims.

In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which the numeral l designates a holder employed in this chart, which comprises a longitudinally extending strip with bent upper and lower edges 2 and 3 that-form grooves to receive the interchangeable A letter sections therein. j rIhe back of the strip l is provided with a plurality of compartments 4e, each of sufficient width to receive therein a number of additional letters, that may be used when desired. These compartments 4 are slightly shorter than the length of the letters, so that the letters will project therefrom and be If desired, the holder grooves 5 on the top and bottom edges of the same as clearly shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings, whereby both sides of the chart may be used. f

The letters which form the basis of this invention are placed on a plurality of sec tions formed with s ome slightly flexible kmaterial, preferably'cardboard, and which are formed in the shape of narrow strips designated byj the numeral 6 and which have'script letters 7 placed on the opposite sides of the same. These sections 6 are not quite as long as the distance between the grooves at the top and bottom edges of the holder, so that when it is desired to place one of the sections inthe holder, it is only necessary to insert one end of the same in the ,upper groove, and :to move it upward until section 6 may have printed thereon in one of the upper corners a small letter corresponding to the letter on the face of the same, which is used for identification when a number of these sections are placed in the compartments behind the holder.

The most essential feature of this invention is the formation of the scriptletters on the sections in such a manner that the letters are adapted to be joined so that it 55'inuch as they have their Vterminals on one side of the section disposedin a single transvverse line, while on the opposite side they In Figs.v 5 andiL of the drawings, l have illustrated one. of the sections showing both sidesof the same, each having a single script letter placedV thereon. Certain letters, however, cannot be con- Vnected by the letter joining illustrated in Figf of the drawings, these letters being B, O, V and'VV, and for them have shown a slightly different arrangement as clearly villustrated in the section having thereon the ,letter .O and shown in Figs. 6 and 6a of the drawings. Fig. 6V villustrates one side lof the section corresponding to the side of the section shown in Fig. 5 or' the drawings, and Ait will be noted that the initial stroke 12 Y and final stroke 13 on this section, while disposed in a single transverse line, is positioned in a linehigher than the transverse line, in which the initial and final strokes of vthe other section are placed. The reverse side of the section Yillustrated in Fig. 6a is alsoprovided with an initial stroke 14 and a iinal stroke 15 that are disposed in spaced ,transverse lines corresponding to a side of the'section illustrated in Fig. 5a of the drawings, but it will be--noted that in this letter the initial stroke lis disposed in a transverse line below the'center of the letter, while the final stroke is disposed in a line above said center, while in the letter shown in Fig. 5a the initial stroke is in a line above the center, while the final stroke is below the same. distance from the base line of writing and causing the letters to imite when placed side by side. ln Fig. l of the drawings, I have 'the letters united to spell the word joined and in this ligure, l have shown a capital letter at the beginning of the word oi a larger script than the other letters, but owing to the fact that this capital letter is not interposed between sections, the formation of the saine is not of primary iinpoitaiice. rIhe capital merely follows out the type of script used in the letters, and it may be lixed to the head of the ii'oi'd as clearly shown.

When it is not necessary to use in the word the letters B, O, V or lV. all the scctions may be joined by use ot the low joinings, that is, the side of the sections which is illustrated in Fig. 5 of the draiii'iiigs. Vlien however, it is necessary to use one of the above mentioned letters, it will be necessary to reverse the card following this letter to the side shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, whereupon the initial stroke of the saine will connect with the iinal stroke of said letter, while the final stroke will once more resume its normal low joining. By this connection, any desired word may be exhibited in the script.

In the spelling of certain woids there is the additional possibility of using two or more of the letters B, O, V, or W in succession, and when this occurs, their joining is accomplished by the scriptletter of the type illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings. By this type of letter as many of these certain letters maybe joined insuccession as desired and when it is once more desired to resume the normal letter joining suitable for the other script letters the type of letter illustrated in Fig. 5"L of the drawings is applied. as has been hereinbefore described.

The sections 6 may be positioned within the card holder at an angle thereto, oi' they may be arranged vertically with respect to the same. llVhen the sections are arranged at an angle, a script alphabet of a greater angle may be employed than when vertical sections are used.

The type of hol der employed in this chart may be varied when desired, it being esseir tial that some support for the various sections be used that will hold the upper and lower edges of the saine in alineiiient. Vhen the type illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings is used, if desired, the letters may be additionally secured in position by means of' small wedges 1G that are driven in between the edge of the lower groove and the lower portion of the section to lock the same in position.

From the foregoing description of the construction and operation of my improved Writing chart, the manner of applying the same to use and the operation thereof Will be readily understood and it Will be seen that l have provided a simple and eiieient chart of this character for carrying out the objects of the invention.

I claim:

l. A Writing chart comprising a plurality et interchangeable reversible sections, each section having a script letter on its opposite sides, the initial and final strokes of said letters terminating at the opposite side edges ot the sections, the terminals of the letters on one side of each section being disposed in a single transverse line, and the terminals et the letters on the opposite side being disposed in spaced transverse lines whereby the sections may be arranged to exhibit difierent expressions in script.

A reversible section for a Writing chart havino a script letter on each of its opposite sides, the initial and inal strokes of said letters terminating` at the opposite side edges of the section, the terminals of the letter on s one side et the section disposed in a single transverse line, the terminals of the letter on the opposite side of said section disposed in spaced transverse lines, and o-ne terminal of said last letter positioned on the same transverse plane as the terminals of the opposite letter.

3. A Writing chart comprising a plurality ofl interchangeable reversible sections, each section having a script letter on its opposite sides, the initial and final strokes of said letters terminating at the opposite side edges of the sections, the terminals of the letters en one side of each section being disposed in a single transverse line, the transverse terminal line in certain sections being spaced from the transverse line of the remaining sections on said sides, and the terminals of each letter on the opposite sides of said seetionsl being disposed in spaced transverse lines.
