TRIMMING DEVICE FOR RUBBER-CLUTH AND THE LIKE.
Application filed February 21, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORA E. HnoKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Trimming Device for Rubber-Cloth and the like, of which the following is a specification.
lvly invention relates to trimming devices for rubber cloth and the like and has more especial refm'enee to a device ada 'ited to cut sheets of rubber cloth into the proper size and shape for the. ua-nufacture of inner tubes for vehicle tires.
The object of the present invention is to provide a, machine which will trim thin sheets of india rubber to the proper size and shape for the manufacture of inner tubes fgr tires.
A further object is the provision of a machine of the character referred to in which the dies are interchangeable and adjustable with reference to each other in order that different sizes of sheets may be cut for various sizes of tires.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved trimming device. i
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same.
Fig. 4: is a section on the line 4-4, Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the die which forms the first operation.
Fig. 6 is a plan View of the die which forms the second operation.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of one of the finished sheets of rubber.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a rectangular frame, preferably formed of angle iron, which is supported upon suitable standards 2. The table is composed of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2d, 1917.
Serial No. 79,506.
two stationary sections 3 and 1:, preferably formed of wood and the filler sections 5, any number of which may be placed in position within the rectangular frame as shown in the drawings, the number of these filler sections used depending upon the length of the sheet of rubber to be trimmed upon the table.
The die (3 located in the frame 1 between the f'ECtlOl'lS 3 and 4 of the bed plate and coacts with the reciprocating knife 7, said knife being u'ovirled with a sleeve 8, which is slidably mounted upon the vertical post 9, said post being fixedly connected to the frame 1.. A pitman rod 10 pivotally connected to the sleeve 8 and to the pitman wheel 11 by means of the wrist pin 12, said pitman wheel being mounted upon the horizontal shaft 13, whiclrshaft is journaled in suitable bearings 14 carried upon the under side of the frame 1, an operating crank 15 being provided upon the forward end of the shaft.
A block 16 is slidably mounted between the side members of the frame, said block being provided with an inclined table portion 17 adapted to be located upon the filler sections 5. A die 18 is formed upon the block 16 and coacts with the reciprocating knife 19, said knife being promided with a sleeve 20 slidably mounted upon a post 21, said post being carried upon the block 16. The pitman rod 22 connects the sleeve 20 with the pitman wheel 23, said pitman wheel being mounted upon a horizontal shaft 2 1 journaled in suitable bearings 25, which are located on the underside of the block 16, an operating crank 26 being provided upon the forward extremity of the shaft 24.
The block 16 is provided on its under face with an internally screw threaded lug 27, which engages thfm screw threaded shaft 28, said shaft being journaled in a suitable bearing 29 carried at one end of the frame 1, collars 30 being fixedly connected to said shaft upon each side of the bearing for the purpose of preventing longitudinal movement of the shaft and an operating wheel 31 being provided upon the extremity of the shaft for the purpose of rotating the same. A scale 32 is provided upon one side of the frame for the purpose of indicating the amount of adjustment necessary for cutting strips of diflerent lengths.
Rubber cloth from which the strips are cut is carried on a stock roll located at the left hand end of the trimming device above described and the cloth is unrolled from the stock roll and spread beneath the cutting knives upon the table, the inclined portion 17 being provided for the purpose of preventing any break between the filler sections and the block 16 as when the rubber is in an uncured condition, a ridge or groove would be formed in the rubber by allowing it to remain for a short length of time over any uneven surface. The cranks 15 and 26 are then operated cutting the left hand end of the rubber strip entirely across and forming the same as shown in Fig. 7. As the next length of the strip is placed beneath the knives the right hand end of the rubber strip which is located beneath the knife 19 will be of the form shown in dotted lines Fig. 7 and as the knives again descend the left hand end of the strip will be formed as shown in Fig. 7 while the knife 19 will cut out the rectangular portion indicated in dotted lines in said figure the finished sheet being of the form shown in Fig. 7
After the gum sheets are trimmed as above described, they are placed in what is known as a book. hen the book is filled it is taken to a table and the sheets are rolled on a mandrel, each sheet forming a two ply tube, the ends of which are of a single ply, thus forming astep at each end, the tube upon the mandrels is then placed upon a wrapping lathe and wrapped and by wrapping with the proper tension the stepped ends will be drawn to a taper doing away with the skiving after the tube is cured and ready for finishing. 7
Although the drawings and abovespecificatien disclose the best mode in which I have contemplated embodying my invention I desire to be not limited to the details of such disclosure, for, in the further practical application of my invention, many changes in form and construction may be made, as circumstances require or experience suggests, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a machine of the character described, a frame, a table mounted in said frame, a die 'slidably mounted in said frame adjacent one extremity of said table, a cutting knife cooperating with said die and an inclined plate carried by said die and arranged to slide upon the upper surface of said table.
2.111 a machine of the character described, a frame, a table mounted in said frame adjacent one end thereof. a block slidably mounted in said frame adjacent one end of said table. a die mounted upon said block, a cutting knife mounted upon said block and cooperating with said die, and an inclined plate carried by said block and arranged to slide upon the upper surface of said table.
3. In a machine of the character described, a frame, a table mounted in said frame adjacent one end thereof, a block slidably mounted in said frame, a die mounted upon said block, a cutting knife mounted upon said block and cooperating with said (he, and removable filler blocks located in said frame between said table and said slidable block.
4. In a machine of the clniracter described, a frame, a table mounted in said frame, adjacent one end thereof, a block slidably mounted in said frame, a die mount ed upon said block, a cutting knife mounted upon said block and cooperating with said die, filler blocks located in said frame be tween said table and said slidable block and an inclined plate carried by said slidable block and arranged to slide upon the upper surface of said filler blocks.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
ORA E. IIECKWAN.
