GANG-PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 8, 1916. Serial No. 135,807.
Ib all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, RHIN'EHART V. KUEN, a citizen of the United States, residing near Amana, in the county of Iowa and State ot Iowa, have invented VCertain new and useful Improvements in Gang-Flows; and I. do hereby declare the following to be a tall, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rIhis invention relates to sulky gang plows, the object of the invention being to provide a simple automatic device to support the plows in raised position, and also adapted to be used to force the plows into the ground.
The invention is fully disclosed in the accompanying drawing, and described and claimed in the specification following.
In the drawing, forming a part olf this specification, Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a typical gang-plow in perspective, with my improved locking device attached, the plow being depressed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the position of the parts, with the plow elevated.l Fig. 3 is a front elevation oi the same.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 denotes the sulky wheel which runs on the unplowed land, mounted on a cranked aXle 2, which may be partially revolved to give proper adjustment to the wheel by a hand-lever not shown. On the axle is mounted the main frame 3, which carries the drivers seat not herein shown, but supposed to be at the left of Fig. 1. On the aXle is also mounted revolubly a tubular member 4 provided with a forwardly projecting arm 5, to which is pivotally bolted a link 6 connecting with the plow-beam 7 by a bolt or stud 8. Extending in an opposite direction is a toot-lever 9, reached by the driver as he occupies his seat, and by means oi which the plow may be elevated, as will be seen by a comparison oi Figs. 1 and 2. In the ordinary gang-plow there is also provided a strong spring 10, connecting with the same stud or bolt at one end, and to the machine frame or some of its connections near the rear, the connection not being herein shown, as it and all of the parts above described are of familiar construction, and form no part of this invention.
It may be further explained that in gangplows as commonly built the plows are sup-V ported in elevated position by a 'dog or lever and a notched sector or the like. In time the dog or notches become worn so `much that they will not hold, and there is then no way to support the plows except by continuous pressure on the foot-lever.
eferring now to Fig. 1 it will be seen that a link 11 is pivoted to the arm 5 by aV bolt 12, some distance back from the connection of the link 6 therewith. To the other end oi this link is pivoted a somewhat longer link 13, as by a bo-lt 14, the upper end of 'the longer link'being preferably folded back upon itself at 15 to receive the end of the short link, and somewhat extended upwardly, for a purpose which will be explained presently. The lower end ol the long link connects with the bolt or stud 8. Near this pivot is hooked tho spring l0, which tends to pull the link backwardly, as will be evident. Near the middle the long link is curved, so that when shifted to the position shown in Fig. 2 the pivots 8, 12 and are practically in line, the curve of the long link abutting against 12, where it is held by the tension of the spring. rlhis, as will be evident serves to lock the parts, and the plows are thus held in suspended position.
To trip this locking toggle lever, and thus permit the plows to descend, I provide a foot-lever 1G, which is preferably stirrupshaped, and hung on the pivot 12. An eX- tension 17 of the lower end is adapted to engage the under side of the tubular rockshai't e', and thus support the toot-lever stirrup when theplows are depressed. When in this position, shown in Fig. 1, it is also evidentthat pressure on the stirrup will serve to force the plows downwardly, provided, 'of course, that they are not held in a fixed position' by other means. Crossing the stirrup is a cross-bar 18, which engages the extended upper end of the link 13 when it is desired to trip thc toggle from its plowsuspending position. It will be understood that in the operation of the device this crossbar neve-r passes in front oli' the upper end oi the long link.
Referring to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the long link 13 is preferably offset at 19, so as never to `foul with the short link.
rllhe operation of the device, which has already been indicated, is very simple. To elevate the plows, depress the foot-lever 9 (or use any other lever that may be provided' tor that par the operator has only to pose-) This action causes all the parts to rise and automatically assume the position shown in Fig. 2 if the foot-lever be far enough depressed. rlhe elevated plows are new in locked position. rllo unlock them and allow them to descend the operator has only to push the stirrup-lever forward, tripping the locked toggle. rlhis lever will be referred to hereafter aS the trip-lever.
rlhe nature of the device is such as not t0 be injuriously affected by ordinary wea-r, or to get out of order, and affords the operator a simple and easily operated means for controlling the positions of the plows, as above set forth.
Having thus claim:
l. In a gang-plow, the combination with the plow-beam lifting apparatus, comprising a lift-lever, an arm cooperating therewith and a link connecting said arin with the plow-beam, of a supporting device, consisting of a toggle, one extremity of which connects pivotally with the plow-beam, and the other with said arm, some distance from the connection of the supporting link therewith, the toggle being adapted to fold back on itself and lock when the plow is fully elevated.
2. Combined with the lifting arm of a gang-plow, a connecting link and a plowbeam attached thereto, a toggle consisting of a long and short link connecting the plow-beam and said arm at some distance described my invention, I
Gopes of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the from the supporting-link connection, and a spring attached to one of the toggle-links to hold it when folded back upon itself and in locked position.
3. Combined with the lifting` arin of a gang-plow, a connected suspending link and a plow-beam attached thereto, of a toggle attached at one of its extremities to the plow-beam and at the other to said arm some distance from the connection of the suspending link, and folding back on itself to locked position when the plow is elevated, and a trip-lever adapted to engage said toggle and disengage it from the locked position.
4t. Combined with the lifting arm of a gang-plow, an attached link and a connecting plow-beam, of a toggle connecting at one extremity to said beam and at the other to said arm at some distance from the connection of the suspending link, and folding back to locking position when the beam is elevated, and a swinging trip-lever adapted to trip the locked toggle to release the suspended beam, and when the suspending arm is depressed to engage it rigidly, whereby said trip-lever may serve to force the plows into the ground. p In testimony whereof l ai'ix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
