To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNHARD J. KROGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Dane, State of Wisconsin, have invented a newV and useful Water-Motor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved water motor, and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind, which is simple, eflicient and practical in construction, and may be constructed for a small cost, and sold at a reasonable profit.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hydraulic movable drum mounted `upon a thrust bearing of a supporting frame and provided with inclined and curved blades arranged annularly, against which the water as it passes through the flume con tacts, thereby' imparting movement to the drum.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a plate engaging the upper surface of the bottom of the flume and having a plurality of openings annularly arranged, through which ythe water pass-es, to contact with said blades, there being an improved valve plate having openings, to coperate with the openings of the first plate, for controlling the amount of water passing therethrough, so as to increase or decrease the speed of the drum. i
One of the features of the invention is the provision of a series of loosely suspended plates carried bythe under surface of the valve plate for covering the openings of the first plate, the loosely mounted plates acting to accommodate themselves to the unevennesses of the upper face of the said first late.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter setA forth shown in the drawings andclaimed.

Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates the bottom or one end of the Hume, upon one or the upper face of the portionl an annular' plate 2 is arranged, and loosely fitting an opening 3 in the part l is the upper circumferential edge portion of the hydraulically movable drum ,4. This drum A comprises inner and outer annular walls 5 and 6, spaced apart from each other, thereby forming. a channel. Connecting these walls 5 and 6 and arranged on angles and in the channel are blades 7 which are curved as'shown in Fig. 1. However, the
upper portions of the blades 7 terminates la short distance below the upper edges of the v walls 5 and 6. The upper and lower edges metal walls S, and keyed centrally and axially in the walls 8, as shown at 9 is a vertical shaft 10, the lower extremity of which is provided with a semi-spherical cavity 11, which receives or engages the semi-spherical end 12 of' a stud 13, rising from a blocky or member 14, which is held in place upon the frame 15 by a clamp 16.. This clamp has a central cavity conforming to the shape of the block or member, so .as to fit or receive the same. A flange 17 rises upwardly from the frame 15, `and threaded into the flange is a plurality of bolts 18, the inner ends of which bear against the clamp 16, and
hold the same in place.. 'It is to be seen that by the provision of the thrust bearing,
. the hydraulically movable drum will rotate very freely, when the water kwhich passes through the flume, contacts with the'blades 7. 'Ihe frame 15l is provided with a plurality of arms 19, having upstanding portions 20, which have reduced extremities 21, which pass through the bottom or one end 1 of the i the frame firmly in position, but also clamping the plate 2. The shaft l0 passes through a central opening of the plate 2, which is provided with a plurality of openings 24, arranged annularly coincident tothe channel of the drum. Extending downivardly "from .the vplate 2 i-s a pair of annular flanges 25 and 26, the inner flange 25 being adjacent the inner ends of the openings 24, While the flange 2G is adjacent the outer ends ofthe open-ings 24. Arranged between the llanges-25 and 26 radially ofthe plate 2 are water deflecting blades 27, which are inclined as to direct the Water directly toiva-rd and upon the blades 7. 1n other Words the blades 27 are inclined in a direction just the opposite to the inclination of the blade 7 .so that as the Water passes through the openings 24 will. strike or contact with said blades 7 thereby imparting revoluble movement to the drum, Which being keyed to the shaft l0, will impart motion to the shaft. Extending upwardly from the plate 2 isa pin. 2S, and arranged adjacent the upper part of the plate 2 isa valve plate 29, which is provided with a slot 30 through which the pin 28 extends, in order to limit the plate 29 in its movement, when being adjusted. The valve plate 29 is provided with a series of openings A31, and radial arms 32 alternately arranged, andthe under face of the plate 29 adjacent the openings 3l and the arms 32 is recessed annularly, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 7. This annular recess33 of the under face of the plate 29 receives a plurality of auxiliary valve plates 34, the thicknesses of Which are slightly greater than the depth of the recess 33, so that the auxiliary valve .plates 34 will ride upon the upper face of the plate 2, so that in case the upper face of the plate 2 should be irregular, orshould become irregular, the auxiliary valve plates ivill always slide Vevenly relative to their respective openings 24. This action is materially insured, o iving to the auxiliary valve plates 34 being loosely suspended from the arms 32 by means of the studs or pins 37, which `are elongated and pass .through the openings 3S of said arms, there being riveted heads y39 atthe upper ends `of the pins or studs, to prevent disconnection of the auxiliary valve plates, when the dominant valve plate .29 is removed. Adjacent the edge of the dominant valve plate a short flange 40 is provided having gear-.teeth 41, which are engaged by the teeth of the pinion 42, which is carried by :the ylower end of a shaft 43. The loiver end portion of the shaft 43 vis mounted in a suitable bearing 44 in the frame of the Hume so as to steady or hold the shaft in position. Ther shaft 10, may be extended to any suitable location and geared in any suitable manner (not shown) to machinery-to be operated. Theshaft 43 VVmay be extended to Aany suitable location and operated in any suitable manner, so that by rocking the shaft 43 in .one direction or the other, the dominant valve plate may be adjusted, in order `to control the flow of Water through the con operating opening. By moving the dominant valve plate 29 in one direction, the speed of -the hydraulically movable drum may be increased, and by moving the dominant valve plate in the opposite direction, the speed of the drum may be decreased.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A submerged Water turbine for liumcs comprising a revoluble drum having annularly arranged inclined blades, said drinn having thrust bearing, a frame for vthe sup-A port of said drum, arplate secured on said frame above the drum and provided with annularly arranged openings provided with plates inclined the V.opposite to the blades, and .means for controlling the amount of fluid passing through said 'opening of said. plate, said means comprising a valve carrying plate having a plurality of openings and the plurality of radial arms alternating with the openings of the valve plate.
2. A submerged Water turbine `for flumes comprising a revoluble drum having annularly arranged inclined blades, said drum having thrust bearing, a frame for the support of said drum, a plate secured on said frame aboveV the drum and provided With annularly arranged openings provided With plates inclined the opposite to the blades, and means vfor controlling the amount of fluid passing through saidvopening-of said plate, said means comprising a valve carrying plate havinga .plurality of openings and the plurality of radial arm-s alternating With the openings ofthe valve plate, and the plurality of auxiliary valve plates loosely carried by said radial arms cooperating with the openings of the first plate for controlling the fluid therethrough.

A submerged Water turbine for llumes comprising a revoluble drum having annularly varranged inclined blades, said drum having thrust bearing, a framefor the supportof said drum, a plate secured on said frame above the drum land provided with annularly arranged openings provided With plates inclined the opposite to the blades, and means for controlling the amount of liuid passing through said `opening of said plate, said means comprising a valve carrying plate having a pluralityof openings and the plurality of radial armsalternating with the openings of the valve plate, and the plurality of auxiliary valve plates loosely carried by said radial arms coperating with the-openings of thelirst plate for controlling the ylluid therethrough, and .means for adjusting said valve plate.

A submerged -Water turbine for flumes comprising a revoluble drum having annularly arranged inclined blades, said drum having thrust bearing, a frame for the support of said drum, a plate secured on said frame above the drum and provided With annularly arranged openings provided With plates inclined the opposite to the blades, and means for controlling the amount of fluid passing through said opening of said plate, said means comprising a valve carrying plate having a plurality with the openings and the plurality of radial arms alternating with the openings of the valve plate, a plurality of auxiliary valve plates, the main valve plate having annular recesses in its under face to receive said auxiliary valve plates, said auxiliary valve plates having studs loosely mounted in said arms and designed to coperate with the opening of the first plate to control the fluid through the openings of the first plate, said main valve plate having a partial annular flange provided With gear teeth, and a rocking shaft having a pinion to engage said gear teeth for adjusting the valve plate.
