Be it known that we, JAMES D. RmrsNY- Dun and HENRY G. SonwERDTLu, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adhesive- Applying Means for Stenciling-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
rllhe present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in means for applying adhesive to stencils, such for instance as the stencil or stencils forming a part of certain machines employed in the manufacture of paper boxes; although the invention may be associated with other types of machines without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the present instance we have shown our improved adhesive applying means as associated with a machine for applying laces or flies to paper boxes, such as illustrated in the patent to Philip S. Smith .jt/:825,009, dated July 3, 1906, in which patent there is shown a machine having a vertically reciprocating stencil and a glue applying roller movable back and forth in contact with the face of the stencil, the said roller being caused to travel back and forth by means of a link, connected at one end to the said roller and at its opposite end to a relatively long oscillating lever moved by a rotary cam.
rlhe prime object of the present invention is to dispense with the said oscillating lever, link and cam for moving the glue-applying roller, which construction is open to certain objections not necessary to mention here, and to substitute therefor an endless carrier for this purpose which construction provides a more compact and less expensive arrangement of parts and a more smoothly operating organization. 1
Briefly and generally stated the invention comprises an Vendless carrier and an applying device coperatively associated therewith, with means for causing the said carrier to move the applying device alternately back and forth.

to understand, make and use the said invention we will now proceed to describe the same in detail reference being had for this purpose to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a stenciling machine having the present invention associated therewith.

The reference numerals l indicate the two side members of a machine frame connected at their upper ends by a cross member 2 from which rises a standard` 3, in whichl standard is mounted for vertical reciprocation, a rod l carrying at its lower end a head 5, to which is attached a stenciling strip G of any suitable form. rlhe rod l is reciprocated by any suitable means, not shown, in order to bring' the head with its stenciling strip to an extreme upper position, where gum is applied to said strip and also to bring the head, with its strip, to a lower position, where the gum on the strip is transferred to a blank or sheet of some suitable kind, such as employed in box making, as for instance a fly or lace paper or a box covering blank, depending upon the particular type of machine in which the stencil is employed.
Secured in any suitable manner to one of the side members l of the frame is a trough or pan 7, in which is rotatably mounted a glue or paste delivery roller S carried by a transverse shaft 9 journaled in suitable bearings, said shaft carrying a sprocket wheel l0 around which passes a sprocket drive-chain 12, the latter deriving its motion from any suitable rotary part of the machine. rlhe said shaft 9 also carries near one of its outer ends a sprocket wheel 13 over which passes a sprocket chain 14, said chain also passing over a sprocket Wheel 15 mounted on a transverse countershaft 16 journaled in suitable bearings carried by brackets 17 secured to the machine frame, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3, the said shaft 16 also carrying a pair of sprocket Wheels 18 for a pur pose presently to appear.
At the opposite side of the machine frame adjacent one of the frame members 1 is a second countershaft 19 journaled in a suitable bearing 2O carried by a bracket 21 secured to the said frame member 1, and said shaft 19 carries at its opposite ends tWo sprocket wheels 22, see Fig. 3.
Passing over the sprocket wheels 18 and 22, respectively, of the shafts 16 and 19, is a continuously moving endless carrier, shovvn in the-present instance as consisting of a pair of endless sprocket chains 23, these chains being driven continuously in one direction through the medium of the sprocket gearing 13, 1st and 15, heretofore described.
Coperatively associated with the endless carrier referred to, is a glue applying device that is adapted to be moved back and forth in contact with the stenciling strip 6 vto apply glue or paste thereto, and this glue applying device and its mode of operation will now be described.
Arranged between the tivo side members 1 of the machine frame is a pair of rods 2st supported at their opposite ends by brackets 25, the latter being supported by screws 26 mounted in cross arms 27 ecured to the cross member 2 of the frame, the said sc 1eivs 26 adjustably supporting the brackets 25 and the rods 2e carried thereby. rThe rods 24 constitute a trackway, upon which is mounted for back and forth movement or reciprocation, a. carriage, con'iprising tivo blocks 28 in which is freely journaled for both rotary and longitudinal movement, shaft 2S) carrying a glue applying device, shown in the present instance as a roller 30, the said roller during the back and forth movements of the carriage, being adapted to be brought into facial contact with the glue supplying rollerV 8 to take up a supply of glue therefrom and apply the same to the under face of the stencil strip 6. The shaft 29 has lined to one end thereof a pinion 31, as more clearly shown in F ig. 3, the purpose of which will bc presently described.
Pivotally attached to the outer face of each of the blocks 28 is an oscillating arm 32 having an extension 33, the said arm also provided with a pair of curved slots 34e; and also pivoted tothe outer face of each of the blocks 28 is a pair of pivoted gripper lingers 35 each having at its free end a toe 36, and each gripper linger having a laterally Vprojecting pin 37, which pins project into` the curved slots 3% in the oscillating arms 32. The toes 36 on the'gripper lingers 35 project or face in opposite directions, the
toe on one of the lingers facing upwardly and the toe on the other facing downwardly, and these toes `are arranged to alternately engage a corresponding laterally projecting lug 38 on each of the endless belts 23, as more clearly shown in Figsf and 5. The said grippers of each block are operated through the movements of the oscillating arm 32 to alternately engage, first, vone run of the endless chain, and then the other run of the chain, 1n order that the carriage with its glue applying roller 30 may first be or trough 7. YWhen the toes 36 of the fingers 35 are brought into lug engaging position with the endless carrier 23, they .Will be securely held in such position by reason of the position of the pins 37 in the curved slots of the oscillating arm 32, and Will be so maintained against accidental disengagement from the lug on the endless carrier until the position of the said oscillating arm has been changed, as Will presentlyappear.V
in order that the arm 32 may be oscillated to alternately operate the grippers 35 to cause, first, one to grip one run of the belt,
(as for instance the upper run) and then` cause said gripper to be Withdrawn from engagement Vwith the lug 38 on the belt, and simultaneously bring the other gripper into position to be engaged by said lug, when the upper run of the belt takes its lower position, or constitutes the lower run of the belt, so that the carriage may be moved first in one directionand then in the other, We provide the following means. At each end of the .machine there is ya bracket L10, as more clearly shown in Fig. 1, in each of Which is adjustably mounted a stop 4:1, said stops being arranged in the path of movement of the extensions 33 of the oscillating' arms 32 so that when said extensions engage the stops 41 at one'side of the machine, the oscillating arms 32 Will be moved in one direc tion to lift one of the grippers, (as for instance the upper one shown in Fig. 5) to cause the toe 36 thereof to be brought into position for engagement with the lug 38 when the latter is upon the upper run of the endless carrier, and to simultaneously lift theother gripper totake its toe 36 out of the path of movement of the lower run of the carrier. Vhen the extensions 33 engage the stops 41 at the opposite side of the machine, the arm'32 Will'be oscillated in the opposite iet direction to cause the toe 36 of the upper gripper to be moved out of engagement with the lug 38, when said lug is upon the upper run of the carrier belt, and the toe 36 of the lower gripper to be brought into position for engagement with said lug when the portion of the 'endless belt carrying the lug constitutes the lower run of the belt. The blocks 28, are each provided with longitudinal grooves in its outer face forming ways for the upper and lower runs of the endless carrier 23, and these grooves or ways have upper and lower facing strips 39 of soft metal to take up the wear of the carrier chain, the upper strips being flanged as shown in Fig. 4, to maintain the chains within the ways.
Inasmuch as there is only one lug 38 on each endless carrier it will be apparent that when the carriage with its glue applying roller 30 is moved to one eXtreme position and the gripper finger moved out of engagement with the lug, some little time will elapse before the lug reaches a position where it will engage the other gripper finger, since4 the endless carrier with its lug must first travel around the sprocket wheels before any rengagement thereof with the gripper can take place. During this movement of the lug from one position to the other there is a dwell in the movement of the carriage, this dwell taking place at each extreme movement of the carriage, and during the dwell the head 5 carrying the stencil strip 6 is moved up and down to do its work. ln order to maintain the carriage in its eXtreme positions during the dwell referred to we provide yieldable checks 42 at each side of the machine each check hav-ing a V-shaped lug 43 that takes into a transverse notch 44 formed in the upper face of each block 2S, the arrangement being such that when the carriage moves to one or theV other of its eXtreme positions the lugs 43 will snap into the notches 44 and hold the carriage against movement until it is pulled A away by the gripper engaging with the lug on the endless carrier. W'hen the carriage is in engagement with the check 42 that is located at the side of the machine which carries the glue pot, the glue applying roller 80 will be held in peripheral contact with the glue supply roller 8, the two rollers being maintained in contact for a certain predetermined period, namely for the length of time it takes the lug on the endless carrier to move around its sprocket wheel, thus insuring the application of an ample supply of glue to the glue applying roller.
As before mentioned the'shaft 29 which carries the glue applying roller is mounted for longitudinal movement in the carriage, and the purpose of this is to shift the glue applying roller 30 laterally at each of itsv eX- treme positions in order to bring a fresh surface of the roller in contact with the stenciling strip during each back and forth movement of the carriage, and to accomplish this we provide at each side of the machine the cam shaped arms 45, which alternately engage opposite ends of the shaft 29 carrying the glue applying roller, to shift said shaft longitudinally and with it the said roller, such shifting taking place by the opposite ends of the shaft making contact with the cam shaped arms 45.
In order that the glue applying roller may be caused to rotate, and thus receive on its surface a fresh supply of glue each time it makes contact with the roller 8, a gear wheel 46 is mounted on the shaft 9, with which gear wheel 46, the pinion 31 meshes whenever the carriage is moved to its extreme position toward the roller 8, and the said rpller 30 will thus be rotated so long as the gears 31 and 46 are in mesh. The gears are held in mesh and the rollers 8 and 30 are maintained in peripheral contact with each other by means of the check 42 which engages and holds the carriage temporarily until it is again moved forward by the endless carrier.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the endless carrier 23 operates through one run thereof, (as for instance the upper run) to rst move the carriage with its glue applying roller in one direction to apply glue to the under face of the stencil 6, and when said carriage reaches its limit of movement in this direction, it will be released from engagement with the said upper run of the endless carrier and remain stationary for a short period, or until the lug on the endless carrier again engages the carriage, the lug then appearing on the lower run of the carrier to move the carriage in the opposite direction, when the latter will again be released, resulting in another dwell of the carriage, during which time the glue applying roller will take up a fresh supply of glue from the glue supplying roller 8, and this operation will continue, the endless carrier mow ing continuously in one direction, and the carriage with its glue applying roller moving alternately back and forth, and being shifted laterally at the end of each movement.

The mechanism of the present arrangement operates smoothly, positively, and is more compact.
Vhile we have herein shown and described the endless carrier for the glue applying roller as consisting of a pair of endless chains, and the carriages as provided with two sets of chain grippers, we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to this exact construction and arrangement of parts, but -reserve to ourselves such modications as come Within the spirit of the invention as covered by the annexed claims. Neither do we wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the application of the mechanism herein shown and described to machines of the particular type to which the mechanism is shown applied, as obviously the said mechanism may be associated-with any type of nachine requiring the use of an applying roller that is alternately moved back and forth to apply glue or other material to a stencil or other means.
What we claim is l 1. In apparatus of the class described, and in combination, a vertically reciprocating stencil, a horizontally reciprocating carriage, an adhesive applying roller for supplying adhesive to the stencil, an endless carrier for alternately moving said carriage with its roller back and forth across the path of movement of and into contact with the stencil when the latter isin elevated position, cooperating interconnecting devices carried by the carriage and endless carrier respectively, and means for actuating said interconnecting devices at proper intervals to cause a dwell in the movements of the said carriage and its roller at the end of each reciprocation thereof, said means and interconnecting devices being so organized that the duration of each dwell will be sufficient to allow the stencil to descend, perform its work and return again to starting position.
2. ln a stenciliug machine and in combination, a vertically reciprocating stencil, an endless carrier adapted to travel continuously in a direction crossing that of said stencil and having oppositely moving rims, a revolving support for said carrier at each en d, a reciprocating carriage movable back and forth by the opposite runs of said carrier and having a limit of movement in each direction less than that of said carrier runs, an adhesive applying means for the stencil mounted on said carriage, cooperating connecting means between the carrier and the carriage for moving the latter, and means for simultaneously disengaging said connecting means from one run of the carrier at the. limit of the carriage movement in each direction and positioning the same for later engaging the oppositely moving run of the carrier whereby to provide a dwell of sufiicient duration in the movement of the carriage at each end to allow the stencil to4 descend to operating position and return again to starting position. y
3. In a stenciling machine and in combination, a vertically reciprocating stencil, an endless carrier adapted to travel continuously in a direction crossing that of said stencil and having oppositely moving runs, a support for said carrier at each end around which it travels, a reciprocating carriage movable by said carrier, an adhesive applying means for the stencil mounted on said carriage, a pair of independently pivoted carrier engaging lingers on said carriage each to alternately engage one of the runs of said carrier, and means for disengaging a linger from one of said runs simultaneously with the movement of the other finger into engaging position with the other run, said disengagement occurring short of the end supports and operating to provide a dwell of suflicient duration to permit the stencil to descend and return again to starting position.
4. ln a stenciling machine and in combination, a vertically reciprocating stencil, an endless carrier adapted. to travel continuously in a direction crossing that of said stencil and havingoppositely moving runs, a revolving support for said carrier at each end, a reciprocating carriage movable back and forth by the opposite runs of said carrier, an adhesive applying means on said carriage, a pair ofcarrier engaging fingers pivotally mountedron said carriage and arranged to alternately engage the oppositely moving runs of said. carrier, means includinO an oscillatory member for simultane-V ously moving andV locking one of said fingers into carrier engaging position and disengaging the other from said carrier before reaching the revolving Vsupport to provide a dwell of sufficient duration for the carriage and adhesive applying means at each side while the stencil descends to perform its work and returns.
5. In combination, a vertically movableY stencil, a continuously moving endless'carrier, provided with a lug, a carriage coperatively associated therewith, a. glue applying roller supported by thecarriage, and a pair of fingers independently pivoted on said carriage and movable on their pivots to withdraw one or the other alternately from engagement with said lugand simultaneously move the other into lug engaging position for traversing said glue applying roller back and forth in contact with said stencil, said fingers being disconnected from the lug at the end of each movement to allowV a dwell of suflicient duration to permit the stencil to descend and rise again. Y
6. In combination, a vertically movable stencil, a continuously moving endless carrier provided with an operating lug, a carrlage cooperatively associated' therewith, a glue applying roller supported by the carriage, a pair of fingers independently pivoted on said carriage and movable simultaneously on their pivots to engage one or the other thereof alternately with said lug to traverse said glue applying roller back and forth in contact with said stencil, and means including an oscillatory member for alternately shifting said fingers into and out of lug engaging position, said means also serving to lock t-he fingers in their shifted positions.
7. In combination, a vertically reciprocating stencil, a continuously moving endless carrier provided with an outstanding lug, a carriage cooperatively associated therewith, a glue applying roller supported by the carriage, separately pivoted rocking means on said carriage movable simultaneously on their pivots to bring first one and then the other thereof alternately into position to be engaged by said lug as it travels along opposite runs of said carrier to traverse said glue applying 'roller back and forth over the stencil, and means for simultaneously actuating the rocking means at each end of its travel to provide a dwell for said carriage of sufficient duration to enable the stencil to descend and rise again to starting position.
8. ln a stenciling machine and in combination, a vertically reciprocating stencil, a continuously moving endless chain having a laterally projecting lug, al horizontally reciprocating carriage, a glue applying roller journaled thereon, a pair of lug engaging fingers separately pivoted on said carriage and movable simultaneously into and out of position alternately to engage said lug for traversing the glue applying roller across and in contact with the stencil, one of said fingers being engaged by the lug when the latter is moving in one direction, and the other finger by the same lug when moving in the opposite direction, a dwell in the movement of the carriage occurring during each change in direction of movement of said lug of sufficient duration to permit a complete downward movement of the stencil to operative position and back again to starting position and means cooperating with said ngers for positively locking each in its adjusted position.
9. In combination, a continuously moving endless belt, a carriage, a trackway therefor,
a roller rotatably supported on the carriage, a. pair of gripper fingers pivotally mounted on the carriage, each having a lateral projection, an oscillating arm mounted on the carriage, said arm having curved ways into which the said lateral projections on the fingers extend, and means for oscillating the said arm to bring the fingers alternately into and out of engagement with the different runs of the belt.
10. In combination, a continuously moving endless belt, a carriage, a traclrway therefor, a longitudinally movable shaft journaled in the carriage, a. glue applying roller mounted on said shaft, interconnecting means between the said carriage and the oppositely moving runs of the belt to cause the carriage to move back and forth with the belt, and means for moving the said shaft longitudinally in its bearings as the latter approaches its opposit-ely extreme positions to cause the said roller to be shifted laterally.
1l. ln a stenciling ma chine and in combination, a vertically reciprocating stencil, an endless carrier moving continuously in a path at substantially right angles to the path of movement of the stencil, supports over which the carrier travels, a glue-applying roller for applying glue to the face of the stencil when the latter is in its uppermost position, means cooperatively associated with the said endless carrier and the said roller for causing the said roller to be brought into and out of interlocking engagement with the different runs of the endless carrier to move the roller alternately back and forth, the length of travel of the roller` in each direction being less than the length of the different runs of the belt, and means cooperating with the said roller-interlocking means for actuating thelatter to cause the roller to stop at a point in its travel before it reaches a support over which the endless carrier travels and remain at rest for a length of time sufficient to allow the reciprocating stencil to move down and back again to the glue receiving position.
