POD-OPENER.
Speoificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 191?.
Application filed June 19, 1915. Serial N 0. 35,153.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. KEMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pod- Openers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a device for facilitating the opening of pea pods, bean pods or the like, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature, which will permit a person to open an augmented number of pods with greater ease than may be accomplished by the ordinary method of breaking the pods with the fingers.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pod opener, which includes a pod receiving channel having an upstanding knife lying centrally therein for ripping open the pods when they are drawn through the trough or channel.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved pod opener,
Fig. 2 is an end view of the opener, and
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary top plan view of the opener.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates the supporting body of the pod opener, which may be constructed of wood, or similar material. The supporting body 1 of the pod opener has a metallic plate 2 secured tothe upper surface of the same, which plate has its end 3 curved upwardly for forming a rest for receiving a portion of the little finger of the left hand, of the operator of the device. The end of the plate 2, remote from the finger rest 3, has a tongue 4 formed thereon which is bent downwardly and lies in facial abutment with the end of the supporting block or body 1.
The tongue 4 is secured to the supporting block or body 1 in any suitable manner, as is indlcated at 5. The plate 2 has a pair of wings 6 and 7 formed upon the end upon the wings 6 and 7, and in a position near the outermost end of the same. The knife 10 is formed by the cutting free of atriangular section of the plate 2 as is clearly shown at 11, in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and bending the tongue or portion which is out free upwardly substantially at right angles to the flat portion of the body, for forming the knife 10.
In the operation of the improved pod opener; the supporting body or block 1 is placed flat upon the table or the like, and gripped by an operators left hand, a portion of the little finger of the left hand of the operator resting in the finger rest 3 formed by the curving upwardly of one end of the body plate 2. The pods are gripped adjacent one end of the same, and drawn through the trough formed by the upstanding wings 6 and 7, at which time they are ripped open by the upstanding knife 10, after which the peas or beans may be easily removed from the pods and deposited in a bowl or the like.
In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, may necessitate alteration, to which the applicant is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
"What is claimed is 1. In a pod opener, a supporting body, a plate secured to the upper surface of said supporting body, one end of said plate bein bent downwardly and engaging the end of said body, a pair of spaced wings formed upon said plate adjacent to said downwardly bent end, said wings being bent upwardly, for forming a pod receiving trough, a portion of said plate intermediate said wings being out free to form a substantially triangularly shaped knife, said knife being bent upwardly from said plate and positioned substantially equidistant of said Wings for ripping a pod upon passage between the wings.
2. In a pod opener, a body block, a metallic plate lying upon and attached to the upper surface of said body block, portions of said plate at one end of the same being bent upwardly to provide upstanding spaced 10 wings forming a trough, a portion of said plate being out free to form a knife, said knife bent upwardly from said plate whereby when pods are drawn through said trough they will be split.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 2 a Copies of this patent'may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Goinmissioner of Patents,
- Washingtoml); G.
