citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New .York, and WILLIAM POSTER, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of- 7 New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Controlled Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification: I v
This invention relates to check controlled mechanisms and particularly to that class thereof which is provided for dispensing drinking cups. I

Each o'f'said escapements is provided with a pinion as 13, for engagement with a rotary rack or internal gear 14. Each of said' escapements is also provlded with a wedge shaped circumferential member 32 which, when said escapements are rotated, enters between the flange .of the lowermost cup 9 and the flange of that cup directly thereabove. Thus said escapements are operable at one time for supporting the stack of cups by means of flanges 10, and at another time for supporting, all of the cups in the; stack except the lowermost one, by means of members 32, and also for separating that lowermost cup from the stack by means of said wedging members'32.
Internal gear 14 is in the form of a rotatable ring having teeth for engagement with the severalpinions 13 of said escapements, and is efiicient for rotating those escapements-in synchronism. Below said ring 14 and concentric therewith is ring 15 having handle 16, whereby said ring may be manually rotated through a limited are of \movement'; Upper ring 14 is guided for rotation by pinions 13, and lower ring 15 is similarlyguided by collars 17, downwardly reaching from said pinions respectively.
Escapements as 11, 12 are rotatably sup- 95 ported on stems as 18 threaded into base 5. For returning ring 15 to its normal position of Fig. 2, spring 19'is provided, and forreturning ring14.to its normal position,
post 20 on ring 15 engages ear 33 of ring 14.
- Cover 6 is provided with a check or coin slot 21, suitably disposed circumferentially of that cover for registering with the coin receiving members of rings 14 and 15, when those rings are in their normal positions as shown'in Figs. 2 and 5, their relative posi- 'tions'being shown in greater detail in said we employ is for the purpose of description I Fig.1 5. Also, the united thickness of rings 14 and 15 is substantially equal to the diameter of the check or coin with top face of ring 14 sufficiently to extend into coin slot 21, will render the machine inoperative by locking said rings to the coin slot.
The coin engaging portions of rings 14 and 15 are of peculiar construction and adapted to coact in engagement with the coin in a peculiar way. Upper ring 14 has means comprising oppositely disposed walls 23 and 24, for engaging opposite edges of one face of the upper half of a check or coin. Said walls 23 and 24 are in the same vertical plane, and the space the'rebetween is cut away at 25 to provide an opening thereat. Opposite said opening is wall 26 for engaging the opposite face of said upper half of sa1d coin.
7 Theflcoin engaging portion of ring 15 comprises projection 27, preferably of hemispherical shape, and said ring 15 is cut away at 28 in front of said projection 27 whereby a pocket isformed between said projection and wall 28. By this. construction, when ring 15is moved in clockwise direction by its handle, 16, projection 27 will engage one face of the lower half of a coin or check 29, the upper half of said coin being cramped between walls23 and 24 on the one hand and wall 26 on the otherhand, of ring 14. The continued movement of ring 15 will cause ring 14 to move therewith through the instrumentality of said coin 29.
If, however, a piece of yieldable material such as paper or cardboard be inserted through.slot 21 into engagement with the coin engaging faces of rings 14 and 15, and handle 16 bethereupon'pulled forwardly,
I Fig. 2, said yieldable material will be so bent or folded as to be ineflicient for moving ring 14 fromring 15. Or, if a stick such as a portion of. a match splint be inserted I through opening '21, it will likewise be inefiicient for moving ring 14 from ring 15.
When a suitable coin is inserted as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and handle 16 is pulled its I ternal gear teeth on ring 14. For enabling a person to amemble the escapements and internal gear teeth with precision and uniformity, we have provided each ofthe gear portions of ring 14 with a tooth 31 thicker than the other teeth, for engagement with the correspondingly wider space 34 in each of said escapements as 12. By this means,
an unskilled person can assemble these'parts with accuracy and despatch.
I claim:
1. Check controlled mechanism including in combination two parallel contiguous members each having check engaging means normally in register with each other, the check engaging means of one of said members being adapted for gripping opposite faces of the check upon one side of a given diameter and for holding said check against material deviation from normality to the common plane of said parallel members, and the check engaging means of the other of said members being adapted for impinging upon one side of that portion of said check on the other side of said given diameter at a single point remote from said diameter.
2. Check controlled mechanism including in combination two parallel contiguous members each having check engaging means normally in register with each other, the check engaging means of one of said members being adapted for gripping opposite faces of the check upon one side of a-given diameter and for holding said check against .material deviation from normality to the common plane of said parallel members, and the check engaging means of the other of said members being adapted for im- -pinging.upon one side of a remote portion engaging means normally in register with each other, check guiding means adjacent to one of said rings, the check engaging means of one of said rings being adapted for gripping portions of the check upon one side of a given diameter of said check and the check engaging means of the other of said rings being adapted for impinging upon one side of a remote portionof said check on the other side of said given diameter. I
4. Check controlled mechanism including in combination two coaxial and axially contiguous rotatable rings, each having check engaging means normally in register with each other, the check engaging means of one of said rings being adapted for grip- I ping opposite portions of the check upon one side of a given diameter of said" check the check upon one side 0 tiguous rotatable rings, each having check engaging means normally in register with each other, cheek guiding means adjacent to one of said rings, said check guiding -mean terminating closely adjacent to the receiving side of the check engaging means of said ring, and means adjacent to the delivery side of the check engaging means of the other of said rings for normally supporting a check in operative position relatively to said rings, the check engaging means of one of. said rings being adapted for gripping opposite portions of V a given diameter of said check and the check engaging means of the other of said rings being adapted for impinging upon one side of a remote portion of-said check on'the other side of said given diameter. p

check engaging means of one of said members comprising bppositely dispi osed narrow walls spaced apart from. each other for engaging opposite edges of one face of that portion of the check lying upon one side of a givendiameter, a wall for engaging the opposite face. of said portion, and
that portion of said check on the other side ofsaid given diameter at a point remote from said diameter.
7. Check controlled mechanism including in combination, two parallel contiguous members each having check engaging means normally in register with each other, the check engaging means of one of said members comprising oppositely disposed narrow walls spaced apart for engaging opposite edges of one face of that portion of the check lying upon one side of a given diameter, a wall for engagingthe opposite face of said portion, and the check engaging means of the other of said members comprising a projection located and adapted for engaging that face of the portion of said check on the other side of said given diameter opposite the edge-engaged face of the first mentioned portion of said check, at a point re- 'mote from said diameter.
