Description

UNITED S'rA'rEs Parana @FHQE.
REUBEN A. SMITH, OF EAST WEARE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO THOMAS It. V. BRADLEY, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,473, dated December 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN A. SMITH, of East \Veare, Hillsborough county and State of New Hampshire, have invented a certain Improvement in the Manner of Hanging the Slats of Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement consists in the metal braces, stirrups, and bars, with an India-rubber loop fastened to the side rails of a bedstead by screws, on which the braces slide, so that the whole device may be easily put on or taken off; also, in fastening the longitudinal slats to the cross-bearers by elastic straps, so that the slats may be easily turned over when sprung; all of which will be more fully hereinafter explained.
Figure 1 is a top or plan view of thebedstead, showing the manner of connecting the slat-frame by my invention at each corner. Fig. 2 is a side view of one rail, showing the braces as fastened by the screws; Fig. 3, details of the invention; Fig. 4, side and top view of the stirrup; Fig. 5, side and top view of the bar; Fig. 6, end and side view of the India-rubber loop-sprin g; Fig. 7, side view of the invention as fastened to the bedsteadrail; Fig. 8, sectional view of the slatframe, showing one slat being turned under the elastic-strap fastening.
A represents the bedstead; B, the slats; G, the cross-bearer, on which the slats rest loosely, being held down by the loops of an elastic strap, f; D, the brace, which has an opening in the middle at d and two slots at d, which are made to slide over the screws (1, being countersunk to receive the heads of the screws. E is a stirrup, top, side, and end views of which are seen in Figs. 3 and 4. E is a cross-beam in the stirrup to support the end of the cross-bearer C. At F on the stirrup is the position for the bar 6, which bar supports one side of the loop. G is an Indiarubber tube of sufficient thickness to support the weight required. (1 d are wood screws to support the braces D by the countersunk slots 01. e is a slot cut in the ends of the stirrup E, as seen in Fig. 4, in which the tenons e of the brace e are made to fit. f is an elastic web or strap fastened to the cross-bearers G by nails or screws f between each slat B, so that should any slat be sprung down, and thus become set, by turning it over, as seen in Fig. 8, the rounded side may be turned up with facility.
To operate my invention, it is only necessary to pass the brace through the loop and let the loop come into the recess 66, (see Fig. 3;) then pass the bar 0 through the loop, and insert the tenons 6 into their corresponding slots 0 in the stirrup, and the device is as represented in Figs.
7 and 3; then slide the slots of the brace D down inside of the screws d, and insert the end of the cross-bearer 0 between the beam E and the top piece E. Thus operate each of the four, and the slat-frame will be hung complete.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The suspending devices, consisting of the brace D, stirrup E, bar 0, and loop G, as applied to the rails of a bedstead, substantially as and for the purpo.-e shown and described.
This specification signed by me at Washington, D. 0., this 2d day of November, A. D. 1871.
REUBEN A. SMITH.
