Be it known that I, JOSEPH LEE ROUSSEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, inthe county of Kings and State of New York, have` invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type or Matrices, of whichthefollowing is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanyassembled iii-line, and then presented to a mold, wherein the slug or linotype is cast, after which they are' distributed and returned to the magazine from which they started.
Under modern conditions, it is common to employ matrices of large size or of great thickness, such, for'instance, las those formed with head letter or display characters. In the use of Such thick matrices, it is found that their' great weight causes undue wear on their tooth combinations and on those on the distributer bar, as well as wear on other parts -of the machine due to their` violent impactfthereon. In order to relieve the partsfofsuch excessive wear, the matrices' heretofore have ordinarily been constructedin skeleton form,f or more specifically, longitudinal cuts or grooves have been made in their side faces to remove as much metal as'possible. As a result, other diiiculties arise,- and particularly in that the necessary7` support is taken awayfrom the front edges of the matrices, wherein the formative characters are located, and further there is the liability that the walls may sink or fall inwardly, causing'the matrices to lose their proper rectangular form, so that they will fail to lock up properly in the assembled line or fit closely against the mold when presented thereto. Various other diliiculties will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
It is the aim of'my present invention to4 avoid the above objections or any liability thereto, and to this end Ipropose to cut or hollow out the main portion of the matrix lying between its side walls, so that 1n other respects it will retain its ordinary form and Specification. of Letters Patent.

In other words, I form the matrix with an interior channel or cavity which will lie between/and be inclosed by its side I walls, so that the latter may give firm support to the front edge of the matrix containing the formative cavity, and so that the general .form and configuration of the matrix may be preserved. In short, this construction will not only permit a great reduction in the weight of the matrices but at the same time will maintain their proper shape and size.
I have illustrated my invention as applied to a very large or thick matrix of the display variety, but obviously many changes and variations may be made in the mode of application and also in its size and form, which will still be comprised within the spirit of my invention. Similarly, the invention may ber-adapted to type or dies as well as matrices.
Generally speaking, I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to any specific form or embodiment, except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective viewof4 the matrix constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a modification.
In the drawing, I have'shown a vmatrix A of the general construction disclosed and Y also provided in its front edge with the formative character A4.
Referring to Figs.. 1, 2 and 3, it will be noted that the matrix A is bored or hollowed out both from its top and bottom edges to produce ellipsoidal channels or cavities, B and B1, extending longitudinally thereof and separated by an intermediate horizontal wall or partition B2, located behind the formative character A4. As a result of this construction, the side walls or faces of the matrix remain unimpaired, the above mentioned channels being located between and incloscd by them. Also7 the weight of the matrix is greatly reduced, without taking end with a longitudinal cut or notch A5,
opening into the interior channels B or C, and designed to cooperate with the fixed stop in the distributer box as the matrix is lifted therefrom for delivery to the distributing mechanism, as well understood in the art.
It will be noted (see Fig. 3) that the interior channels are so formed and located so as to reduce the opposite'side wall of the matrix at its upper end as at A7, to allow it, when lifted, to pass the iixed stopjust re.- ferred to. The longitudinal notch: and the interior channel of the matrix thus serve conjointly "to, make up the so-called sepa-- rating notchl which is present inthe common form of matrices. Heretofore these separatingy notchesuhave been formed by means of a rotary ksaw having a considerable radius, and have consequently acquired great extent in matrices of substantiall thickness, extending practically throughout their length and resulting in an appreciable weakening.
' This weakening becomes quite serious in connection with thethicker matrices and principally those having head-letter or display characters, because the notches are not only necessarily of greater vdepth and length, but
in addition such large matrices have coin-l monly been formed with other longitudinal notches or grooves to remove as much metal as possible to lighten them. These objections are overcome inthe present formr of matrix, in that the longitudinalcuts orI4 `notches A5 are only of .such extent as is necessary to allow thefmatrices to clear theI overlying stop rail during their detachment from the line, the notches being of small and uniform` extent throughout the set or -font and thereby avoiding the weakening of the matrix bodies. In addition, the manufacture of the matrices is materially facilitated, the interior cavities Bor C usually first being drilled therein from one end or the other, and the cut or notch A5 next cut through the side wall by means of a suitable tool such as a milling or planing tool or the like; and if desired, an air blast may be employed during the slotting process to blow off the chips, the interior cavities furnishing a good exit therefor and greatlyy facilitating the operation. Thematrices may thus not only be formed with `separating notches of the short and uniform' length described, but' their manufacture may be materially simplified andthe expense correspondingly reduced.
