To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. Fox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TypelVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in typewriting machines.
The objects. of this invention are: First, to provide an improved key action and type bar movement for front strike typewriting machines. Second, to provide improved means for supporting and fulcruming the rock levers and finger levers so that these levers are all fulcrumed on the same casting. Third, to provide improved means for fulcru'ming the finger levers so that any one of these levers can be removed without disturbing any of the other finger levers. Fourth, to provide in an improved type-bar movement, rock levers having fulcrum slots therein whereby any one of said rock levers may be removed from the machine without disturbing any of the other rock levers. Fifth, to provide a type-bar movement having a pitman pushing connection between the rock levers and the cam levers whereby an improved type-bar action is secured. Sixth, to provide a type-bar movement having aplurality of cam levers of equal length pivoted in the type bar segment and connected to the type bars, each of said cam levers lying in the plane of the type bar to which it' is connected; Seventh, to provide a type-bar movement having pitman links connecting the rock levers and the cam levers, said pitman links being connected with the rock levers and the cam levers by pivots having spherical portions permitting of the movement of the cam levers with the typebar segment from lower to upper case position and vice versa. Thirteenth, to provide, in a type-bar movement. fulcrum wires for the type-bars and for the cam levers, said fulcrum wires being adjustable so as to bring a new bearing surface into'play when necessary. Fourteenth, to provide an improved type-bar movement in which the movement of the connections exerts a force downward when the segment is in lower case position and upward when it is in upper case po- Fifteenth, to provide an improved type-bar movement comprising a shiftable type bar. segment carrying a plurality of type-bars, said type bars being so mounted and having such operative connections with the finger levers that the initial movement of the type bars requires the exertion of a small force while said type bars have a very strong action at the. finish and approach the platen with considerable force. Sixteenth, to provide an improved type bar movement having a shiftable type bar segment, a plurality of type bars so mounted in the segment that each one can be removed therefrom independently of the others, said type bars when in working position being held from displacement by a yielding retaining segment instead of the customary universal bar. Seventeenth, to provide an improved type bar movement comprising a plurality of type bars mounted in a shiftable segment, rock levers operatively connected with said type bars and finger levers connected to said rock levers, each of said finger levers being connected to the corresponding rock lev'er at a point on a line drawn through the fulcrum of said finger lever and said rock lever, the distance of said point from said rock lever fulcrum being determined by the vertical height of the a rock lever and the length of the finger lever so that equal depressions of the keys at the ends of the finger levers produce an equal movement of the tops of the rock levers operatively connected to said finger levers. Eighteenth, to provide an improved type bar movement having a shiftable type bar segment, a plurality of type bars carried thereby and having cam slots therein, a plurality of cam levers of uniform length carried by said type bar segment and lying in the same planes as the type bars to which they are operatively connected.
Further objects, and objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly definedand pointed out in the claims.
A structure constituting a preferred em bodiment of 'my invention and embodying such parts of a. front strike typewriter.as are included and involved in my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, I desire to state that my invention here illustrated is adapted to the well known Fox typewriter. The machine here shown is provided with the finger levers 1 having the keys 2, said finger levers being connected to actuate the type-bars 3 so as to bring them into printing engagement-with the platen 4. Toward the rear of the base of the machine, the casting 5 is secured at its ends to the sides of the base of the machine.
ofthe machine, the finger levers 1 being fulcrumed in the rear bar 6 while the rock levers 8 arefulcrumed in the front bar 7. The rear end of each of thelfinger levers has formed therein a fulcrum notch 9 in which the fulcrum rod 10 is disposed. The bar 6 is slotted and in each of the slots 11 one of the finger levers 1 is disposed with the notch 9 inengagement with the fulcrum rod 10. The fulcrum rod 10' is carried by the bar 6 extending longitudinally through the'slotted portion thereof. A plate 12 is disposed on the bottom of the bar 6 closing the slots 11, and plate 12 is held in position against the bottom of the bar 6 by the bolts and. support, between the bars 6 and 7, the
slotted bar 16, the rear edge of said bar being upturned slightly, as shown at 17. Springs 18 are secured to the finger levers 1 a short distance in front of the fulcrums thereof and the screws 19 are screwed into the upper ends of the springs 18. The heads of these screws are disposed in the slots 20 of the bar 16 and are supported by the edges thereof. By turning the screw 19 the tension of the spring l8upon the finger lever can be adjusted and each of these springs can be removed by lifting the head thereof to carry it over the turned up edge 17 of the slotted bar 16. This removal can be effected without changing the adjustment of the spring.
The forward edge of the front bar 7 is providedwith a plurality of slots 21, one of the rock levers 8 being disposed in each of said slots. A fulcrum rod 22 extends longitudinally of the. bar 7 through the slotted portion thereof, as shown in Figs. I, III and TV, and forms the fulcrum for the rock levers 8, each of said rocklvers 8 being pro-- vided with a fulcrum slot 23in which the fulcrum rod 22 is disposed, so that by pulling the rock lever forward, when the corresponding finger lever is removed from its fulcrum, the rock lever can be removed from its fulcrum.
The rock lever 8 is in the form of a bell crank, the forward end of which is connected at 2% to the corresponding finger lever 1. The point 21 is on a line passing through the fulcrum point of the finger lever and the fulcrunf point of the rock lever, the finger lever extending upwardly for a short dis-' tance after it passes under the front bar 7. The point 2+1 is in front of the fulcrum 22, thedistance between the point 21 and the rock lever fulcrum 22 varying according to the length of the finger lever and the vertical height of the rock lever 8. The vertical height of the rock lever 8 varies as you pass from one side of the machine to the other and the length of the finger levers also varies, there being finger levers of four different lengths. In the construction of a typewriter, it is desirable that the type bars at the side of the machine operate with as little for all of the rock levers. To this end, point.
2 is located at such a distance in front of the rock lever fulcrum that a movement of the top of rock lever 8 will result, which is the same in all of the rock levers. The differences in the vertical height of the rock levers and in the length of the finger levers,
being compensated for by the change in location of the point 24 and a consequent change in the length of the short arm of the rock lever represented by the distance be tween the points 22 and 24.
The type bars 3 are so constructed that the type bar head, when brought to printing position will always present the type to the platen at right angles to the axis of the platen. To do this, it is necessary to bend all of the type bars, except in the very center of the machine, and this bend is more pronounced in the bars at the sides of the machine. When the type bar is brought to printing position these bending points all come to a position which is substantially the same for all of the type bars and is located a slight distance below the printing point. This point may be called the bending point of the type bars. Therock levers toward the center of the machine are approximately straight but those toward the sides of the machine are bent at varying angles so that the upper ends of each rock lever lie in a plane passing through the bending-point of the type bars. The point at which the bend a head 27, a spherical portion 26 having abearing in the rear end of the pitman link 28, and a cylindrical portion 25 disposed in the upper end of the rock lever 8, the end of the cylindrical portion 25 being upset as shown in Fig. VII. This pivot having the spherical portion 26 permits of the lateral movement of the pitman link 28 occasioned by the shifting of the type bar segment from the lower to upper case position and vice versa.
The forward end of the pitman link 28 is connected to the cam lever 29 by a pivot having a head 31, avspherical portion 32, which has a bearing inthe forward end of the pitman link 28, a cylindrical portion 33 which is disposed in the square-faced cam slot 35 formed in the tail 30 of the type bar 3, and a smaller cylindrical portion 34 mounted in the upper end of the cam lever 29, the end of the pivot being upset to hold the same in place. Because of the spherical portions formed on the pivots 26 and 32, the lateral movement of the pitman link, which is caused by the shifting of the type bar segment from lower to upper case position and vice versa, is permitted. By using pivots of this nature which allow the slight lateral movement caused by the shifting of the type bar segment, I am able to use rivets for making these connections and to use a square faced cam slot in the type bar.
In order to save space and to permit of the bringing, of the rock levers and cam levers closer together at the center of the machine where comparatively little space is left for each lever, the pivots connecting the cam lever with the pitman link andthe rock levers with the pitman link are arranged oppositely and symmetrically, as shown in Figs. II and III. Fig. III shows the arrangement of the pivots connecting the upper ends of the rock levers to the rear ends of the pitman links. It will be seen that at corresponding to those in Fig. III, and thuspermitting the bringing of the cam levers and the type-bars closer together at the center of the machine where the space is limited.
The type-bar segment 36 is shiftable, after the manner well understood in the art, so as to bring the segment from lower to upper case positlon and viceversa. This segment is provided with a lower cam lever supporting bar 37 which is formed on the arc of a circle concentric with the bending point of the type bars and has a plurality of slots 38 in which the lower ends of the cam levers 29 are disposed; A fulcrum wire 43 is disposed in said bar 37 and extends in the arc of a circle concentric with the bending point through the slotted portion of bar 37 The ends of said fulcrum .wirev 43 are threaded and have the nuts 44, 44 on the ends thereof so that the fulcrum wire 43 may be shifted longitudinally in said bar 37.
The lower end"of the cam lever 29 is rounded and provided with a fulcrum slot 45 in which the fulcrum wire 43 is disposed, as clearly shown in Figs. I and X. The rounded lower end of the cam lever engages the bar 37 at the back of the slot 38, so as to hold the cam lever on'its fulcrum. When it is desired to remove the cam lever from its fulcrum, all that needs to be done is to .move the cam lever forward to the dotted line position shown in Fig. X, so that thefulcrum slot 45 extends vertically. The cam lever can then be lifted from the fulcrum wire 43..
The upper portion of the type bar supportin segment consists of a comb 39 forms in the arc of a circle concentric with the bending point of the type bars and provided with a plurality of slots 40 inwhich the type bars 3 are pivoted. A type-bar fulcrum wire-41 is disposed on the arc of a circle concentric with the bending pointand is carried by the comb 39 extending through the slotted portion thereof. Nuts 42 are threaded on the ends of the fulcrum wire 41 so that the same mayabe shifted longitudinally in the comb 39. The type-bars 3 are all fulcrumed on the type-bar fulcrum bars can be kept in perfect alinement. The
same is true of the fulcrum wire for the camlevers 29, which can also be shifted longitudinally by tightening one of the nuts 44 and loosening the other and thus shifting the fulcrum wire to bring a new bearing surface to place. These fulcrum wires also serve to reinforce the segment.
A fulcrum slot 46 is formed in the tail of the type-bar 3, the fulcrum wire 41 being disposed in said fulcrum slot 46. There is also formed in the tail of the type-bar a cam slot extending at an angle to the fulcrum slot 46. These two slots are square faced, being stamped out of the typebar with the walls of the slots extending at right angles to the face of the bar. This results in a considerable saving since the edges of these slots do not have to be rounded ofl. The cylindrical portion 33 of the pivot 32 bears in the cam slot 35- to actuate the same. A portion of the type-bar surrounding the cam slot is rounded, as at I 47, and a slot 49 is provided by which the type bar canbe slipped on and off the fulcrum wire 41. It will be seen, that the cam levers 29 are all fulcrumed in the type bar segment and are movable with the latter and with the type-bars as the segment is shifted from upper to lowercase position and vice versa. These cam levers are of uniform length and lie in the plane of the corresponding type bar.
The pitman link 28 is; connected to'the upper end of the cam lever 29. When the segment is in lower case position the pivot 32 connecting the cam lever and the pitman link is below the pivot connecting the pitman link and the rock lever, and when the finger lever is depressed to actuate the type- ,push by which the type bar is actuated assists in holdmg the type bar segment in upper case position as a part of that push is delivered upwardly when the segment is in upper case position. i
In order to secure the best results, the fulcrum pointof the cam lever should be locatedbelow the point where a line drawn through the pivot 32 at right angles to the line passing through the type bar fulcrum 41 and the pivot 32 intersects a vertical line drawn through the fulcrum wire 41. The cam lever fulcrum 43 is located on this vertical line and, if the.fulcrum 43 is located above the point of intersection referred to, when the cam lever is actuated, it will produce a downward movement of the type bar before the upward movement commences.
The rear face of the slotted bar 39 is curved'slightly on a curvature corresponding to that of the part 47 of the type-bar and projects slightly beyond the curved part 47 of the type-bar, as clearly shown in Figs. I and XII. Arms 50 are secured to the edges of the type-bar segment at 51 and project inwardly from the same. A curved re taining segment 52 is provided which has a curvature corresponding to the arc of a circle concentric with the bending point of the type-bars and a cross sectional curvature corresponding to the part 47 of the type-bar but of enough greater radius to permit the type-bar to move freely without rubbing on the retaining segment. This curved retaining segment is so disposed that it rests upon the curved rear portion of the bar 39, as shown in Figs. I and X11.
Springs 53 are carried by the arms 50 and engage the curved retaining segment to hold it yieldingly in engagement with the bar 39. This curved retaining segment serves to hold the type-bars in position on the typebar fulcrum wire 41'andyieldingly resists their displacement. When it is desired to remove the type-bars it is necessary to push 45.
the same rearwardly against the spring pressed segment 52 so as to bring the slot 49 in linewith the fulcrum wire. In the normal operation of the type bars to bring the type bars to'the printing position, this retaining segment takes no part and does not engage the type bars. However, the springs 18 connected to the finger levers operate to bring the type bars back to their normal position with a quick movement which has a tendency to cause the type bar to jump from its place onthe fulcrum wire 41. A retaining segment 52 serves to prevent this and in this respect takes the place of the universal bar of the Underwood typewriter which is located near the tail of the type bar to prevent the displacement to the upper part of thetype-bar segment 36 and prq ects upwardly toward the print ing point in a manner well known in the art. The shiftable type bar segment 36 carries a universal bar 55 in position to be engaged by the shoulders on the'type-bars so as to actuate through the plunger 56 and the disk 57, the ribbon shift mechanism 58 and the escapement mechanism 59. As these parts do not form a part of the invention described in the present application and are included and described in my copending application, Serial No. 246, filed Jan. 2; 1915, I do not describe them in detail at this point.
From the description of the parts given above, the operation of my device should be very readily understood. When the finger lever 1 is depressed, the upper end of the rock lever 8 is thrown forward pushing the pitman link 28 forwardly so as to throw forwardly the cam lever 29 and the pivot 32 carried thereby and disposed in the cam slot 35 of the type-bar 3. The engagement of the pivot 32 in the cam slot 35 of the type bar 3 gives'a forward push to the tail of the typebar which carries it into printing position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Due to the fact that the cam slot 35 is located in the tail of the type-bar and that the type-bar is actuated by a push delivered by the pitman link 28 on the tail of the type-bar through the pivot working in said cam slot, the force with which the type-bar moves is accelerated as the type-bar approaches the printing point,
thus giving an. easy start and a strong finish to the stroke of the type-bar. The finger levers 1 and the rock levers 8 are all fulcrumed in the same casting which is removably attached to the base of the machine. The finger levers 1 are so fulcrumed in this". casting that any one of them can be removed therefrom without interfering with the others. This is accomplished by loosening the nuts 14 on the bolts 15 so as-to allow the plate 12 to drop down. The finger lever 1 can then be forced downwardly against the tension of spring 18 and pulled forwardly so as to draw the end thereof from the slot 11 in bar 6. The springs 18 which are secured to the finger levers 1 have their upper ends removably supported in the slotted bar 16 and these springs can be removed therefrom by lifting the screws 19 at the upper ends thereof so as to carry them over the' turned up edgel"? of said bar in the manner which I have already described. The tension of these springs can be adjusted by turning the screw 19in the upper end of each spring. The springs can be removed as described without disturbing the adj ustment. The rock lever 8 has a fulcrum slot 23 in which the fulcrum wire 22 is disposed. The rock lever 8 can be removed from the fulcrum, when the finger lever 1 is removed, by pulling forward the finger lever. Any one of these rocklevers 8 with-the corresponding finger lever 1 can be removed without disturbing the others. The pitman link 28 is connected to the upper end of the rock lever 8 and the cam lever 29 by means of pivots having spherical portions 26 and 32 respectively. These -the shifting of the type-bar segment from? lower case to upper case'position. Since this movement is taken care of by the spherical portions of the pivots it is possible to use rivets to make these connections instead of screws, which is a point'of considerable ad- Vantage in p the manufacture of type-bar movements. This also makes it possible to use a square faced sl'bt in the type-bar. The
cam lever 29 has a slot 45 at the lower end thereof and these cam levers can be removed from the fulcrum wire 43 by turning them forward into the dotted line position shown in Fig. X, when they ,can be removed by lifting the lower end thereof fromthe fulcrum wire. The walls of the cam slot 35 and of the fulcrum slot 46 in the type-bar are square faced, that is, they extend at right angles to.
the face of the bar, and the cylindrical portion 33 of the pivot 32 engages the walls of the slot 35. This. is madepossible because the lateral movement of the pitman links 28 caused by the shifting of the type-bar seg-- ment is taken up by the spherical pivots 32 and 26 respectively. I The pitman link 28 has a bearing on these spherical portions of the pivots so that there is a good bearing no matter whether the pitman link 28 is shifted laterally slightly or not, owing to the fact that it always bears on the diameter of a great circle of the spherical portion 26 or 32 referred to above. The point 24 where the rock lever is'connected to the finger lever 1, can be very accurately determined as has already been pointed out and the position at this point varies depending upon the length of the finger lever and the. vertical height of the corresponding rock lever so that uniform depressions of the keys produce uniform movements of the tops of the rock levers 8. The curved or rounded rear portion of the bar 39 extends slightly beyond the rounded part 47 of the type bar, as shown in Figs. I and XII, so that the retaining segment 52, which rests on the rear of the bar 39, is normally out of contact with the type bars so that they do not rub against it. However, as

I am aware that the particular structure which I have here shown is susceptiblegof considerable variation without departing from the spirit of my invention, and, therefore, I do not wish to be restricted to the same. Ina typewriting machine,-the combination of a casting secured to the base of the machineoand provided with a rear bar havmg a plurality of slots formed therein; a finger lever .fulcrum wire carried by said rear bar; a plurality of finger levers dis-- posed in said slots, said finger levers having fulcrum notches formed in the rear ends thereof in which said fulcrum wire is disposed; a plat disposed on the bottom of said rear bar and closing the slots therein; bolts said springs; the heads of said screws being disposed in the slots of said comb and supported by the edges thereof; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified. 2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of. a casting secured to the base of the machine and provided with a rear barhaving a plurality of slots formed therein; a finger lever fulcrum wire carried by said rear bar; a'plurality of finger levers disposed in said slots, said finger levers having fulcrum notches formed in the rear ends thereof in which said fulcrum wire is dis posed; a plate disposed on the bottom of said rear bar and closing the slots therein; bolts extending through said plate and through said rear bar; nuts provided on the upper ends of said bolts; said casting having a front bar provided with a plurality of slots formed therein; a rock lever fulcrum wire carried-by said front bar a plurality of rock levers'disposed in the slots of said front bar, said rock levers having fulcrum slots formed therein in which said fulcrum wire is disposed, said rock levers being connected to said finger levers in front of the rock lever fulcrum; a slotted comb extend ing parallel to said front and rear bars and midway between the same, said slotted comb being provided with an upturned rear edge; a plurality of springs connected each at its lower end to one of said finger levers; a screw threaded intothe upper end of each of said springs; the heads of said screws being disposed in the slots of said comb and supported by the edges thereof; all coact'ing substantially as described and for the purpose specified. In a typewriting machine, the combina tion of a casting secured to the base of the machine and provided with a rear bar having a plurality of slots formed therein; a finger lever fulcrum wire carried by said rear bar; a plurality of finger levers disposed in said slots, said finger levers having fulcrum notches formed in the rear ends thereof in which said fulcrum wire is disposed; a' plate disposed on the bottom of said rear bar and closing the slots therein;
bolts extending through said plate and through said rear bar; nuts provided on the upper ends of said bolts; said casting having a front bar provided with a plurality of slots formed therein; a rock lever fulcrum wire'carried by said front bar; a plurality of rock levers disposed in the slots of said front bar, said rock levers having fulcrum slots formed therein in which said fulcrum wire is disposed, said rock levers being connected to said finger levers in front of the rock lever fulcrum; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

In a-typewriting machine, the combination of a base; a casting secured thereto and having rear and front bars; a fulcrum wire carried by said rear bar; a finger lever havin a fulcrum notch at its rear end in which said fulcrum wire is disposed; a rock lever fulcrum wire carried by said front bar; a
rock lever provided with a fulcrum slot in which said rock lever fulcrum wire is disposed, said rock lever being connected to said finger lever; a comb supported by said casting above said bars; a spring detachably supported by said comb and secured at its lower end to said finger lever; a type bar segment; a type bar fulcrum wire carried there:

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a supporting bar provided with a plurality of slots; a fulcrum wire extending longitudinally of said bar through the slotted portion thereof; a plurality of finger levers provided with fulcrum notches at the rear ends thereof in'which said fulcrum wire is disposed; springs engaging said finger levers andholding said notches in engage In'ent with said wire; a plate disposed on the bottom of said bar and closing the slots therein; bolts extending-through said plate and said bar; and nuts threaded on the ends of said bolts whereby said plate can be lowered suficiently to permit the removal of any one of said finger levers; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a plurality of removably fulcrumed finger levers; a slotted supporting bar hav ing an upturned edge; a plurality of springs disposed in the slots of said bar with the heads thereof engaging the edges of said slot whereby said springs are removably supported; all coacting substantially as describedand for the purpose specified.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a plurality of removably fulcrumed finger levers, a slotted supporting bar; a plurality of springs having their lower ends secured to said finger levers; and a screw threaded into the upper end of-each of said springs, said screws being disposed in the slots of said bar with the heads thereof engaging the edges of saidslot whereby said springs are removably supported; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination ofa type bar segment; a plurality of type bars pivotally mounted therein, and provided with cam slots; a slotted arcuate bar forming a part of saidsegment; a fulcrum wire disposed therein and extending through the slotted portion thereof; a plurality of cam levers having forwardly facing fulcrum slots in which said fulcrum wire is disposed, each of said cam levers being independently removable from the fulcrum wire; a pin carried by the upper end of each lever andengaging in one of said cam slots; and a plurality of finger levers and connections between said finger levers and said cam levers; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

In -'a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar segment; a slotted arcuate ,comb forming a part thereof; a fulcrum wire extending through the slotted portion of said comb; a plurality of type bars provided with fulcrum slots in which said fulcrum wire is disposed, each .of said type bars being independently removable from said fulcrum wire; the rear portion of said comb being curved and extending slightly beyond the portion of said type bars adjacent the fulcrum slots; a curved retaining segment yieldingly engaging the curved portion of said comb and adapted to engage said type bars to prevent their displacement from the fulcrum wire; a plurality of finger levers; and connections from said finger levers to said type bars; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar segment; a slotted arcuate comb forming apart thereof; a fulcrum wire extending through the slotted portion thereof; a plurality of type bars provided with fulcrum slots in which said fulcrum Wire is disposed; a slot insaid type bar communicating with said fulcrum slot to permit the passage of said fulcrum wire to permit the removal of said type bar;
levers and said type bars; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
11; In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar segment; a slotted arcuate comb forming a part thereof; a fulcrum wire extending through the slotted portion thereof; a plurality of type bars provided with fulcrum slots in which said fulcrum wire is disposed; a slot in said type bar communicating with said fulcrum slot to permit the passage of said fulcrum wire to permit the removal of said type bar; said comb having a curved portion at the rear thereof, and each of said type bars having a rounded portion adjacent the fulcrum slot, the curved portion ofsaid comb extending slightly beyond the rounded portion of said type bar; av curved retaining segment en- 'gaglng the curved portion of said comb; a
plurality of finger levers; and connections between said finger levers and said type bars; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

In a type writing machine, the combination of a suitably fulcrumed finger lever; a suitably fulcrumed rock lever connected therewith; a shiftable-type bar segment; a type bar pivoted therein having'a tail provided with a rearwardly extending cam slot; a cam lever pivoted insaid segment, the pivot of said cam lever'being on a vertical line extending through the pivot of said type bar and below the intersection with said verticalline of a line drawn at right angles to said cam slot when the type bar is in normal position through the rear end thereof; and a pitman link pivotally connected at its rear end to the upper end of said rock lever and at its forward end to the upper end of said cam lever, the pivot connecting said pitmanlink and said cam lever being disposed in the. camslot of said type bar and the pivot connecting the cam lever and the pitman link beinglower than the pitman connecting the rock lever and the pitman link vwhen the segment'is in lower case position and higher when it is in higher case position; all coacting substantially as described and forhthe' purpose specified.
13. In a type writing machine, the combination of a suitably fulcrumed finger lever; a suitably fulcrumed rock lever connected therewith; a shiftable type bar segment; a
type bar pivoted therein having a tail provided with a rearwardly extending cam slot; a cam lever pivoted in said segment; and a pitman link pivotally connected at its rear end to the upper end of said rock lever and at its forward end to the upper end of said cam lever, the pivot connecting said pitman link and said cam lever being disposed in the cam slot of said type bar and the pivot connecting the cam lever and the pitman link being lower than the pitman connecting the rock lever and the pitman link when the segment is in lower case position and higher when it is in higher case position; all coacting substantially as described and'for the purpose specified.
14. In a type writing machine, the combi nation of a suitably fulcrumed finger lever; a suitably fulcrumed rock lever connected therewith; a type bar segment; a typebar pivoted therein having a tail provided with a rearwardly extending cam slot; a cam lever pivoted in said segment; and a pitman link pivotally connected at its rear end to the upper end of said rock lever and at its forward end to the upper end of said cam lever, the pivot connecting said pitman link and said cam lever being disposed in the cam slot of said type bar; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a shiftable type bar segment, a plurality of type bars pivoted therein and having tails provided with rearwardly extending cam slots, a plurality of cam levers of uniform length pivoted in said segment and each having a part engaging in the cam slot of the corresponding type bar, a plu-.
rality of rock levers of varying lengths fulcrumed in the frame of the machine, pitman links connecting the upper ends of said rock levers with the upper ends of said cam levers, the upper end of each rock lever and the corresponding cam lever and type bar being disposed in the same plane, and means foractuating said rock levers.

In a type writing machine, the combination of a suitably fulcrumed finger lever; a suitably fulcrumed rock lever connected to said finger lever at a point'near' its fulcrum; a shiftable type-bar segment; a type-bar pivoted therein and having a tail provided with a cam slot, the walls of said slot extending at right angles to the face of said type bar; a cam lever pivoted in said typebar segment; a pitman link connecting the top of said rock lever to the top of said cam lever; a pivot, having'a spherical portion, connecting the upper end of the rock lever to the rear of said pitman link; a second pivot, having a spherical portion, connecting the top of said cam lever to the forward endh of said pitman link; the ends of said pitman links having bearings on the spherical portions of said pivots; said second pivot having a portion disposed in the cam slot of said type-bar and being disposed lower than the pivot connecting the rock lever and the pitman link when said type bar segment is in lower case position and higher than said pivot when said type-bar segment is in upper case position; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
17. In a type Writing machine, the combination of a suitably fulcrumed finger lever; a suitably fulcrumed rock lever connected to said finger lever at a point near its fulcrum; a shiftable type-bar segment; a type-bar pivoted therein andhaving a tail provided with a cam slot; a cam lever pivoted in said type-bar segment; a pitman link connecting the top of said rock lever to the top of said cam lever; a pivot, having a spherical portion, connecting the upper end of the rock lever to the rear of said pitman link; a second pivot, having a spherical portion, connecting the top of said cam lever to the forward end of said pitman link; the ends of said pitman links having bearings on the spherical portions of said pivots; said second pivot having a portion disposed in the cam slot of said type-bar and being disposed lower than the pivot connecting the rock lever and the pitman link when said type bar segment is in lower case position and higher than said pivot when said type bar segment is in upper case position; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
18. In a type writing machine, the combination of a suitably fulcrumed finger lever; a suitably fulcrumed rock lever connected to said finger lever at a point near its ful crum; a shiftable type bar segment; a type bar pivoted therein and having a tail pgovided with a cam slot; a cam lever pivoted in said type bar segment; a pitman link connecting the top of said rock lever to the top of said cam lever; a pivot, having a spherical portion, connecting the upper end of the rock lever to the rear of said pitman link; a second pivot, having a spherical portion, connecting the top of said cam lever to the forward end of said pitman link; the ends of said pitman links having hearings on the spherical portions of said pivots; said second pivot having a portion disposed in the cam slot of said type bar; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
19. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a shiftable type bar segment; a. type bar pivoted therein and having a tail provided with a cam slot; a cam lever pivoted in said segment; a finger lever; a rock lever connected therewith; a pitman link connecting the upper end of said rock lever with said cam lever; and a pivot con- ESQ necting the upper end of said cam lever with said pitman link and having a spherical portion on which the forward end of said pitman link has a bearing and a cylindrical portion having a bearing in the cam slot; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a shiftable type bar segment; atype bar pivoted therein and having a tail provided with a cam slot; a cam lever pivoted in said segment; a finger lever; a rock lever connected therewith; a pitman link connecting the upper end of said rock lever with said cam lever; and a pivot connecting the upper end of said cam lever with said pitman link and having a spherical portion on which the forward end of said pitman link has a bearing and a cylindrical portion having a bearing in the cam slot; all. coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
21. In a type writing machine, the combination of a finger lever; a rock lever connected to said finger lever; a type bar segment; a type bar pivoted therein and having a tail provided with a cam slot, the walls of said slot being at right angles to the face of the type ar tail; a cam lever fulcrumed in said segment and having a part engaging in said cam slot; a pitman link connecting said cam lever and said rock lever whereby on the actuation of said finger lever said'cam lever will be pushed forward to bring the type bar to printing position and pivots connecting said pitman link with said cam lever andsaid rock lever respectively, and provided with spherical portions permitting a lateral movement of said link; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar segment; a type bar pivoted therein and having a tail provided with a cam slot; a cam lever pivoted in said segment; a pitman link; a pivot connecting said pitman link and said cam lever and having a portion disposed in said cam slot; and means for actuating said pitman link; all coacting substantially 'as described and for the purpose specified.
23. In a typewriting machine, the com-' bination of a shiftable type bar segment; a
type bar pivoted therein and shiftable therewith, said type bar having a tail provided with a cam slot; a cam lever pivoted in said shiftable segment and having a part engaging in said cam slot; arock lever fulcrumed in the frame; means for actuating said rock lever; a pitman link connecting said rock lever and said cam lever; rivets connecting said pitman link and said rocklever and said pitman link and said cam lever, said rivets being so formed as to permit of a lateral movement of the pitman link when the segment is shifted; all coacting substan-. tially as described and for the purpose'specified.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar segment; aplurality of type bars pivoted therein and having tails provided with cam slots; a plurality of cam levers of uniform length pivoted in said segments, each of them having a part engaging in one of said cam slots; a plurality of finger levers; keys on the'forward endsv of said duce uniform movements of the upper ends of the rock levers; and connections from said rock levers to said cam levers; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type bar segment; a plurality of type bars pivoted therein, and provided .with tails having cam slots; a plurality of cam levers of uniform length pivoted in said segments and having a part engaging in said cam slot; each cam lever being disposed in the plane of the corresponding type bar tail; a plurality of finger levers and operative connections between said finger levers and said cam levers; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type-bar segmenthavinganarcuate comb; a plurality of type bars pivoted in said comb and having tails provided with cam slots; a plurality of cam levers of uniform length pivoted in said segment and lying in the planes of the corresponding type bars, each of said -cam levers having a part engaging in the cam slot of the corresponding type bar; a plurality of rock levers pivoted in the frame, the upper ends of said rock levers lying in the planes of the corresponding type bars; pitman links connecting the tops of said rock levers with said cam levers and lying in the planes of the corresponding type bars; and means for actuating said rock levers; all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

a curved retaining segment engagingthe rear part of said comb; a pair of arms secured to the segment; and springs carried by said arms and engaging said retaining segment to hold it yieldingly in position;

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a plurality of finger levers; a plurality of rock levers connected to said finger levers; a type bar segment; a plurality of cam levers fulcrumed therein; type-bars fulcrumed in said segment; the tails of said type-bars being provided with slots; pitman links connecting said rock levers and said cam levers and carrying a pivot disposed in the cam slots of said type-bars, the heads of the pivots connecting said rock levers and said pitman links, and said cam ill levers and said pitman links on the opposite sides of the machine being disposed toward the outside and arranged oppositely and symmetrically, all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
