PATENT OFFICE.
EDWlN R. SHEPARD, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLUTlNG-TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,428, dated November 28, 1871 antedated November 23, 1871.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWIN R. SHEPARD, of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Spring Fluting-Tongs, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the construction of the shanks in two separate parts and connecting them by means of an inflexible yoke or ring instead of a continuous semicircular spring. This yoke is provided with parallel lugs with holes to receive the ends of said shanks, which pass horizontally through the edges of the ring in such a manner as to secure them iirmly in position; the object ofthe invention being to obviate the lateral movement ofthe prongs occasioned by the Weakness of the ordinary semicircular spring, and also to allow of the appliance of the handles or stops subsequent to the attachment ot' said prongs to the shanks, thereby facilitating the operation of the manufacture of the article and diminishing' the liability to deran gement.
Figure l is a side elevation of the tluting-tongs embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is the yoke or ring of the saine detached.
A is the yoke, which is provided with parallel lugs B of sufcient thickness to allow of a hole for the reception of the ends of the shanks O. These shanks are made of Wire of the same thickness of the prongs a a a and b b, which are attached to them by brazing; or they may be attached by suitable metallic connections. The prongs are then adjusted and finished; after which the handles or stops D are placed in position. The ends of the shanks c c are then entered into the holes in the lugs B and driven through into corresponding lugs 011 the opposite side of the ring or yoke A, which secures them in position. By this means the required spring for operating the tongs is obtained from the elasticity of the wire shanks c, their vibrator-y action being shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. While these shanks are sufciently elastic for the convenient operation of the tongs their connection with the yoke A prevents the undue lateral movement of the prongs.
As this mode of construction admits of the appliance of the handles or stops D after the article is nearly finished, the liability of soiling them during the operation of brazing and polishing is obviated.
' I claim as my invention- The yoke A or its equivalent when applied to the shanks c, as hereinbefore described, for the purpose set forth.
EDWIN R. SHEPARD.
