Be it known that I, Cnaunus Cououm. a citizen of the United States residing at Kalamazoo, Michigan. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in naces, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention relates to improvements in furnaces.
My improvements are particularly designed by me for embodiment and l have shown the same l have embodied them in use in-a furnace, such as is illustrated and described in the Strong; Patent, No. 1,002,776, dated September 5. 1911. lviy improvements are, however. readily adapted for arious designs of this type of furnace in which the air is circulated downwardly from a surrounding cold air chamber to an inner hot air chamber.
The main object of my invention is to pro vide an improved furnace structure of ti o type described, in which the circulation from the surrounding cold air chamber is not materially affected or interfered with by the radiation of heat from the furnace body,
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined ed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in. the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which:

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the furnace body, a portion of the fire-pot and theash pit only being shown. I provide an outer casing 2 and an inner casing fi spaced to provide a cold air supply chamber 4 between. The inner casing 13 is spaced from the body of the stove to provide a hot air chamber 5 between. The base ring 6 for the ou er casing is secured to the stove body by the bars 7. The inner casing is supported with its lower end in an elevated position by and point specification of Letters Patent.

To protect this passage space from heat radiated from the furnace body. which is found to interfere with the effective irculation from the cold air chamber to the hot air chamber 1 provide a baliie member or shield 10. Ihis member 10 is mounted between the furnace body and the inner casing and in a spaced relation to both by means of the angle brackets 11 on the bars 7. the upper edge ot this battle member projects slightly above the lower edge of the inner casing, while the lower edge of the battle member is supported in a slightly elevated position, so that it is possible for air to circulate under it and between it and the stove body. The baiile member thus arranged protects the space 9 from radiation from the furnace body and prevents the outer casing becoming heated by radiation and also prevents the air in the space 9 from becoming heated. so that circulation of air from the coldair chamber to the hot air rhan'iber is not interfered with.
in the structure illustrated a front wall 12 is mounted on the furnace body and provided with outwardly y)rojecting flanges 13 to which the outer casing is secured, the inner casing being secured to the rear side of the trout wall. The ends of the baiiiememher are also secured to the front wall at 14.
The structure is very simple and economical and at the same time is found to be very eilicient.
l have not attenuated to illustrate or describe my improvements in the various adaptations or modifications which might be desirable to adapt them to different designs oi furnaces, as I beiieve the disclosure made will enable those skilled'in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the san' as structural conditions may render desi rable.

In a furnace the combinatlon with the furnace body, of inner and outer casings spaced to provide a cold air chamber be-' tween, theinner casing being spaced from the furnace body to provide a hot air chamher, the bottom of the inner casing being supported in an elevated position to provide for the passage of air from the cold air chamber to the hot air chamber, and a battle member, disposed in said air passage space below said inner casing and in a spaced rela titan-to, both the inner casing and furnace body and with its lower edge in a slightly elevated'position and its upper "edge projecting slightly above the lower edge of said inner casing, and constituting a shield for said air passage space below the iI ip'er casing.
