To aZJ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVENDELL B. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in atch-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in watch holders for vehicles and particularly to watch holders adapted to be attached to the steering wheel of an automobile.
An object of my invention is to produce a watch holder for attachment to the rim and spoke of an automobile steering wheel.
A further object is to produce a watch holder in which the watch will be cushioned from vibrations transmitted to the steering wheel by the motion of the engine or of the vehicle itself.
A further object is to produce a watch holder in which the watch will be held in position within the holder by means of straps which secure the holder in position on the wheel.
These and other objects are attained in the watch holder described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a watch holder embodying my invention secured to a steering wheel, the steering wheel being fragmentally shown for convenience of illustration. Fig. 2 is a back view of the holder embodying my invention, the position of the steering wheel with relation thereto being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
My improved watch holder is preferably made entirely of leather, a flat piece 4 forming the back, a piece 5 forming the front, and a series of straps 6, 7 and 8 being attached thereto for securing the holder in position on the steering wheel. The back is substantially circular in formation with a portion at its top cut away to afiord access to the stem of the watch in order that it may be wound. The front is sewed or otherwise suitably secured to the back around the edge thereof, and is molded to provide space for the watch between it and the back, the molded formation permitting of the back being flat so that it may lie closely to the steering wheel. A circular opening 5 in the front renders the watch face visible. The stitching 9 which connects the back and the front extends but partially around the edges of the back and front, the space between the points 10 and 11 where the stitching is discontinued being of a sufficient width to permit of the watch being slipped into the holder easily. Beyond the ends of the stitching both the back and the frontare provided with slots 12, 13, 14 and 15 on one side and 1G, 17, 18 and 19 on the other side, through which the straps 6 and 7 are passed after the watch is in position within the holder and previous to securing the straps around the rim 20 of the steering wheel. Adjacent to the lower edge of the back 4: are provided two slots 21 and 22 through which the strap 8 is passed previous to securing it around the spoke 23 of the steering wheel. The front 5 is also cut away at its top similar to the cutting away of the back so that access to the winding stem of the watch may be had.
It will thus be seen that by means of my improved watch holder I have provided a construction which is at once light, simple, strong and cheap to manufacture, as well as one which is ornamental and at the same time affords a secure receptacle for thewatch. It is impossible for the watch to become displaced from the holder during the time it is in position on the steering wheel for the reason that the straps 6 and 7 which secure the top edges of the holder together, leave a space between them too small for the watch to pass therethrough. For this reason it is impossible for the watch to be either jarred or otherwise displaced from the holder without removing it therefrom after the holder has been detached from the steering wheel.
A particularly novel feature of my invention lies in its attachment to the rim and a spoke of the steering wheel. By thus attaching my improved holder to the rim and spoke of a. steering wheel it is prevented from slipping along either the rim or the spoke or from twisting with relation thereto. In this manner the watch is held in a convenient position and is at all times visible to the driver without having to divert his eyes materially from the road as when secured to the center of the wheel or dashboard of the vehicle.
Although I have described the receptacle as being made of leather, it may as readily be made of other resilient or fibrous material, While the straps may be made of metal or fabric with suitable means for securing them in position.
WVhat I claim is:
1. A watch holder comprising a back of substantially flat fibrous material, a front of molded fibrous material having a shape adapted to form a watch receiving recess betweenit and the back when the back and front are sewed together, stitching securing the back and front along substantially their entire perimeters with suflicient space between the ends of the stitching'to permit a watch to be inserted in the space between the back and front, and straps engaging the rim and a spoke of the steering wheel to secure the holder in position, certain of said straps being attached to the front beyond the ends of the stitching and extending through the back, whereby the opening left between the ends of the stitching will be substantially closed when the straps are socured to the Wheel.
2. A watch holder comprising a back of fibrous material, a front of the same material, said back and front being secured together along substantially their entire perimeters, suificient space being left to permit 51* a watch to be inserted between them with its stem projecting beyond the unsecured portions of the edges, a strap secured to the back and adapted to embrace a spokevof a steering wheel, and straps engaging the front and back at the unsecured portions of the edges and adjacent to the projecting stem of a Watch located between the front and back, adapted to draw the unsecured portions of the edges together to substan- 49 tially close the watch-receiving opening and to embrace the rim of the steering wheel on each side of the embraced spoke, with su'tlicient space left at the unstrapped unsecured portions of the edges to permit of the pro- 4 jection therethrough of the stem of a Watch located in the holder.
