W Wm;
UNITED STATES RUFUS S. MERRHiL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,394, dated November 28, 1871.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUS S. MERRILL, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a speciication:
This invention relates to a class of lamp-burners of which the burner patented to Halvor Halvorson on the 20th of September, 1859, is the type-that is to say, a lamp-burner combining a single slotted deiiector with two wick-tubes having a draught-passage between them, and so arranged that the iiames from the two wicks will pass through the deiector in the form of a single flame. My invention consists in the means, substantially as hereinafter described', whereby this combination of elements is adapted to a lampburner in which the deector and chimney-rest are arranged so as to be removable bodily and together from the remainder of the burner.
The manner in which my invention is or may be carried into effect will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which is represented what is usually termed a sun-burner.7
Figure l is a vertical central section of the burner. Fig. 2 is a like section in a plane at right angles to the plane of section in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a plan of the burner with one-halfof the defleotor broken away.
The burner represented is one in which an elevated deflector is used, the chimney serving to inclose the space between the delector and the chimney-rest below; and it is in connection with this burner that the invention will be described, although it is manifestly applicable also to burners of other kinds which have a removable chimney-rest and deflector.
A is the screw-threaded base of the burner, which screws into the lamp. To this base are secured two wick-tubes, B, with a space, a, between them, above the cap of thebase, which forms a central air-passage. Wick-adjusting pinions b are provided for each wick-tube, the shafts of these pinions being geared together by gears c so as to move in unison, and one of the shafts extends outside of the base, and is provided with the usual milled head or button. This forms the lower part of the burner, which is designed to be attached to the burner when in use. The upper part of the burner consists of the perforated diaphragm and chimney-rest G, the raised single-slotted deiiector D, provided at its outer edge with the usual chimney-holding springs, and the guide-tube E which carries the chimneyrest and deflector and fits the lower part of the burner in such manner that when applied thereto it will cause the deliector to assume its proper position above the wick-tubes. The slot in the deiiector is arranged so as to be over the top of the wicktubes or the central space between them. In this instance the guide-tube extends up around and encircles the wick; and, therefore, in order not to interfere with the center draughts, slots or perforations d are made in the'tube, which allow air entering through the air-distributer or perforated diaphragm to pass into and up through the central draught-space a to the iiames. The construction of this guide-tube may be varied but, however formed, and whatever its construction and dimensions, it should be so made as not to interfere with the central draught or the passage of air from the exterior of the burner into and up through the central draught-space.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, substantially as shown and set forth, with a screw-threaded base and two wick-tubes having a draught-passage between them, of a single-slotted deflector, a chimneyrest and air-distributer, and a guide-tube removable 'om the wick-tubes, and constructed substantially as described to allow air to pass through the air-distributer into and up through the passage or space between the wick-tubes, for the purpose stated.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
Witnesses: RUFUS S. MERRILL.
