To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that 1, WILLIAM H. CLEHM, citizen of the United States, residing at Glassboro, in the county of Gloucester and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lubricating devices and has for its object the provision of a simple positive and certain means for causing the certain delivery of a lubricating oil to a journal bearing, and is particularly useful in connection with the axle bearings of railway cars.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lubricating device that includes a pumping system for forcing lubricating oil from a reservoir or other holder directly to the bearing to be lubricated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for the purpose described which may be applied to any journal and the oil delivered to the bearing, even though the latter be at a considerable distance from the point of application of the device to the journal.
With the above as the principal objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of a railway car axle with the lubricating device in position thereon, portions of the latter being shown in section, Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section of the same parts, and Fig. 3 is a bottom or inside view of an axle brass.
In the drawings indicates the end of a railway car axle the terminal portionbf which is flanged as usual as at 11. The axle l0 bears at its top against the inner side of a semi-cylindrical bearing or brass 12 through the center of which is formed a perforation 13 for the passage of the lubricating oil to the axle 10. The outer end of the perforation leads from a shallow depression or counter sink 14 to direct the oil into the perforation and prevent it from spreading over the outside of the brass.
The inner end of the perforation 13 communicates with a longitudinal channel 15 formed in the top of the bearing surface'of v the brass 12 and from said channel smaller transverse channels 16 are formed in the inner concave surface of the bearing by means of which the lubricant is distributed over the surface of. the axle 10.
On the end of the axle 10 is a cam disk 17, the latter having a short cylindrical hub 18 projecting from one side in the axis of said cam the end of which hub bears against the end of the axle 10 and is secured thereto by bolts 19. Journaled on the hub 18 is a supporting arm 20 the enlarged upper end or head 21 of which encircles the hub which freely rotates in said head. Rigidly secured on the lower end of the arm 20 is a pump 22, the cylinder 23 of which is connected to said arm and projects downwardly therefrom to a greater or lesser distance according to the circumstances. The upper end of the cylinder 23 is enlarged as at 24 for a portion of its length, the unction between the cylinder and the enlarged portion forming a shoulder 25.
Slidable within the cylinder 23 is a cylindrical piston 26, the upper end of which carries a flange 27 that fits snugly in the enlarged portion 24 of the cylinder but is capable of sliding freely therein in a longitudinal direction, The upper or flanged end of the piston bears a ainst the under surface of the cam disk 1% contact with said camby a spiral spring 28 that bears at its ends respectively against the flange 27 and the shoulder 25. The cam disk 17 has a' regular curvature with projecting portions 29 diametrically opposite each other so that upon each rotation of the car axle 10 the piston plunger 26 will make two strokes or movements in the cylinder 23.
The bottom 30 of the cylinder '23 is provided with a short nipple 31 having an opening therethrough leading into the cylinder and exteriorly threaded, upon which nipple is screwed one end of a short tube 32, the opposite end of which is enlarged as at 33 in the form of a shallow funnel. The open end of the funnel is covered by a screen 34: made of wire cloth or any other suitable material to prevent the passage of dirt with the oil into the pump cylinder 23. Near the lower end of the short tube 32 is a transverse partition 35 having an opening therethrough and formed with a seat on its upper side for a ball valve 36 held against said seat by a spring 37 within the tube beand is held in tween said valve and the lower end of the nipple 31. Extending laterally from the bottom of the cylinder is a short tubular stem 38, the outer end of which is closed by a plug 39. The inner end is separated from the cylinder 23 by a perforated valve seat 40, against the outer side of which is a valve 41 held in place by a spring 42 bearing on said valve and on the inner end of the plug 39. A small outlet tube 43 is screwed into the top of the stem 38 and leads upwardly in the most convenient and direct manner to a point above the perforation 13 where its end is bent down-ward so as to discharge into said perforation. The pump 22 is held in proper position by a brace rod 44 connected at one end to an ear 45 on the pump cylinder, and at its other end to some convenient point on the journal box or other stationary part.
In using this device the cam 17 is bolted against the end of anaxle 10 as shown with the hub, 18 extending through the head of the supporting plate 20 and the pump 22 extending downward therefrom. The spring 28 maintains .the plunger or piston 26 against the undersurface of the cam. The enlarged end 33 of the short tube 32 is inserted in a suitable receptacle containing lubricating oil and the outlet pipe 43 carried to a point above the axle where its end is turned downwardly as shown. ever rotary motion is imparted to the axle 10 the cam 17 also revolves and operates the piston 26 twice with each revolution, these reciprocations serving to draw oil upwardly through the pipe 32 into the cylinder 23 and force said oil past the valve 31 and up the pipe 43, from which it is discharged into the perforation 13 of the journal brass 12.
This invention although described as be- I ing particularly designed for car axles may be used upon axles of other kinds, and machinery shafting, and also, instead of being suspended in a vertical position it may be placed in a horizontal gle therebetween.
What is claimed is 1. In a lubricating device, the combination of a pump, means adapted to be fixed upon the axle or shaft for reciprocating the plunger ofthe pump, inlet and outlet pipes at one end of said pump said outlet pipe leading to the bearing to be lubricated, and means for suspending said pump from the plunger reciprocating means.
2. In a lubricating device, the combination of a pump having a reciprocating plunger adapted to projectat one end from the cylinder of the pump, means adapted to be attachedto a rotatable axle or shaft for reciprocating said plunger, valve inlet and outlet pipes connected to the opposite end of the pump, and supporting means for the pump mounted upon the rotating plunger operating means.
3. In a lubricating device, the combination of a pump having a reciprocating plunger, means capable of attachment to the end of a rotatable shaft or axle for reciprocating said plunger, a delivery pipe leading from said pump to the bearing to be lubricated, and suspending means for the pump mounted on the plunger reciprocating means.
4. In a lubricating device, the combination of a pump, a plunger reciprocating therein, a cam adapted to be secured against the end of a journal or shaft for reciprocating said plunger, a valved inlet tube for the pump adapted to enter an oil receptacle, a valved outlet tube leading to the bearing to be lubricated, and a supporting plate rotatably mounted on the hub of said cam and fixed to said pump.
