To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. MGCANNA, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Force-Feed Lubricators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specifica tion. rlhis invention relates to improvements in force feed lubricators in which a portion of the mechanism for supplying oil from the reservoir and forcing it onward to its lubricating destination is projected from the reservoir and therefore liable to injury, and in which two or more pumps have necessarily been used in forcing the o-il from' the reservoir onward to its destination.
The prime object of this invention is a force feed lubricator the mechanism of which is entirely7 confined within the reservoir, the oil from which is alternately sup plied through separated passages to a single piston pump and likewise forced therefrom through lubricating pipes onward to its destination. A further object of this invention is to make it possible and practical to utilize a single rotary valve as a means of connection between the oil reservoir and a single piston pump, and between the discharge pipe leading from the pump and valve for conducting oil to its lubricating destination which valve during a continuous revolution provides for alternately supplying from the reservoir to the pump through separate.

Another object of this invention is to have the pump .piston provided with means for adjusting its length of stroke for varying the feed of the oil to the pump and. likewise from the pump to its lubricating destination provided with adjustable means which may be conveniently locked by a simple and effective means against the possibility of accidental movement. With said ends in view my invention finds embodiment in certain features of novelty and construction, combination and arrangement of parts by which the said object and certain other objects are hereinafter attained, all as fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

As a means of support for the several parts of the lubricator structure I may employ two separated metal brackets 8 and 9 connected for the purpose of rigidity by a tie rod 1()` and supported upon the bottom of the oil'reservoir 11. The upper end of the reservoir is provided with an inturned fiange 12 upon which is mounted an annular plate 13 in turn supporting an annular plate ltprovided at its inner edge with an upwardly inclined iange 15 between which and thep'late 13 is secured a pane of somewhat thick glass 16, the cover so formed being secured to the reservoir by means of screws 17 passing through the annular plates 13 and 14 and screwed into the iange 12. The reservoir is also provided with a single opening 18 for an elbow 19, the inner end 2O of which is screw-threaded to receive a nut 21 for connecting the lubricating pipe hereinafter described, and also (see Fig. 2) with an opening 22 through which to project a power shaft 23 journaled in the brackets 8 and 9. Thepower shaft 23 has upon its inner end a pinion 211: meshing with a gear wheel 25 upon a shaft 26 journaled in the brackets 8 and 9 and prevented from endwise movement by a collar 27 at one end secured to the shaft by a pin 28 bearing against a hub 29, and the bearing of the gear against the hub 30 on the brackets 8 and 9, the pinion and the gear preferably being a two to one gear.
Mounted upon and rotating with a shaft 2G is a cone-shaped valve 32, of which there may be two or more, which valve is splined on the shaft so that it may be tightened in its bearing against a valve casing arate from the brackets 8 and 9, by means of a coiled spring 34 one end of which bears against a shoulder 35 formed in the casing, and the other end against an opposing shoulder 86 on the end of the valve. Valve 32 is provided with two peripheral grooves 87, 38, one of which 87 is well toward the apex of the cone formed by the valve, and the other 88 toward its base between the ends of which and longitudinal of the valve the periphery thereof is uninterrupted in its bearing against the casing as indicated at 89-39 in Fig. 1. The groove 37 (see Fig. 4) is adapted to form a connection by means of a pipe 38 with the oil in the reservoir well toward its bottom and an oil inlet 39 in a pump 4() on the upstroke of its piston 41, and also through the oil inlet 39a with a lubricating pipe-42 on the downstroke of the pump piston alternately with the rotation of the valve the oil from the reservoir being cut olf when the pump is in connection with the lubricating pipe 42, and vice versa. On the upstroke of the pump (see Figs. 2`and 3) and during the revolution of the valve the groove 38 connects the reservoir with the pump by means of a pipe 43 andan inlet 45 in the pump and also said inlet 45 with a lubricating pipe 46. In short, during a continuous revolution of the valve and on alternate upstrokes of the piston, both of said grooves successively connect the, oil reservoir Vwith the pump and on the downstroke of the piston, likewise connect the pump with their respective lubricating pipes and whereby it is made possible and practical to use-a single rotating valve and a single piston pump coperating therewith to supply oil from the reservoir to the device to be lubricated in a lubricator in which four strokes of the piston'are required to conduct oil from a reservoir onward to its lubricating destination automatically through two passages from the pump.
The pump piston is actuated by means of an eccentric 47 on the-power shaft 23 from the strap 48 of'which eccentric projects an arm 49 in the free end of which arm is mounted a lever 50 on a pivot 51 about midway length of the lever. One end of lever 50 is mounted upon a pivot 52 sustained b posts 53-53 projecting upwardly from the brackets 8 and 9 the free end of the lever 5() being provided with a bifurcation 54 sleeved upon the stem 55 of the piston 41, which (see Fig. 2) is cut away or flattened at both sides as shown at 5G t'or the engage- 83, seplation, accessibility ment therewith of the lever yoke, and also to form shoulders at a point 57 limiting the downward movement of the piston and thereby preventing the piston troni being carried downwardly by the lever to a hainmering contact with the bottom of its cylinder.
Above the eut away portion 56 of the piston stem is a flange 58 of greater diameter than that of the screw-threaded end 59 oi the stem adjustable upon which is a nut (30 provided with a depending hub 61 bearing against the ilange 58, the function oi which nut is to adjust the screw of the piston and thereby vary the supply of oil to and its discharge from the pump onward to its destination. lf, for example, the nut is raised on the stem above the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, there will be lost motion between the lever and the nut and thestroke of the piston be correspondingly shortened, and on the other hand lengthened when the nut is moved to a lower position than it is shown in the drawings to occupy relative to the free end of the lever 50, the shoulder 57 on the piston forming a means whereby on the downstroke of the lever the piston is moved in the same direction and by this means the amount of oil supplied to and discharged from the pump through the rotary valve may be determined and fixed.
As a novel and convenient means for positively locking the nut in its several adjustments the stem of the piston rod (see Figs. 5, 7 and 8) is provided with an elongated longitudinal slot 62 extending well toward the base of the screw-threa ded portion of the stem the nut being also provided with a similar but shorter slot 68 adapted to be registered with the slot 62 in the stem for the reception of a V-shaped key G4 adapted to be passed through these two slots when in register with each other and held against longitudinal movement by means of lugs 65 near their free ends adapted to engage with opposing longitudinal grooves GG for preventing the accidental longitudinal displacement of the key with the nut GO and so that the key without disconnecting it from the piston stem may be raised above the nut for adjusting it and thereupon lowered to its locking position.
As a means for preventing accidental disengagement of the key from the nut the latter may be provided at one side adjacent the lock 65 with a perforation 67 through which and other registering perforations 68 in the key a pin may be passed and thereby the key be prevented from accidental rising to disengagement with the nut.
The key 64 is perfectly V-shaped and of spring steel not only for the purpose of cheapness in construction, ease of manipufor adjustment and permanency of locking but because by its resiliency a frictional contact is produced between it, the nut and the stem, to prevent its accidental movement when once adjusted to its operative position.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A force feed lubricator comprising in combination a single piston pump, separate passages leading from the reservoir to the pump and two separate passages leading from the pump to lubricating pipes through which the oil is conducted to its destination and a rotary valve providing separate passages each of which during the rotation of the valve alternately connect the pump with the reservoir and with a lubricating pipe, all of said mechanism being entirely confined within the reservoir.
2. A force feed lubricator comprising in combination a single piston pump, separate passages leading from the reservoir to the pump and two separate passages leading from the pump to lubricating pipes through which the oil is conducted to its destination, a rotary valve providing separate passages each of which during the rotation of the valve alternately connect the pump with the reservoir and with the lubricating pipe all of said mechanism being entirely confined within the reservoir said reservoir being provided in its top with a glass Window forming a portion of the walls thereof.
3. A force feed lubricator comprising in combination a single piston pump, two separate supply and a plurality of discharge pipes therefor, a rotating valve interposed between said pump and passages provided with peripheral grooves separately connecting therewith two passages in the pump, one of which is common to each of the valve grooves whereby oil is supplied to and discharged from the pump through one passage therein during the rotation of the valve.
4. A force feed lubricator comprising in combination a reservoir, a power shaft, a single piston pump and eccentric on said shaft connected with the piston, means on the piston for adjusting the stroke thereof, a rotary valve provided with separate grooves forming a plurality of oil passages connecting the contents of the reservoir with the pump and discharge passages conducting the oil onward to its destination.
