To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. MARTIN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Owensboro, in the county of Daviess, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Graders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to road scrapers.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved general construction of road scraper especially designed to perform all of the operations connected with scraping roads, constructing and level- 'ing ditches, covering tile drains, and the like.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of scraper of this class wherein the parts may be readily adjusted for the varying conditions of use.
7 A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of scraper wherein the main scraping blade will at all times out clear of grass, and the like from the edges of the road, except such grass and sods as may be of such character as not to interfere with the proper action of the scraper.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure l is a plan view of a scraper constructed in accordance with this invention, and showing the same arranged for use in scraping and grading onehalf of a road; Fig. 2 is a similar plan view showing the position of the parts when the device is used for covering in tile drains, and the like. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the scraper as arranged in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the scraper as arranged in Fig. 1. . herein illustrated there is provided a main scraper 10 which has a forwardly curved lower edge. This main scraper is preferably formed of a metallic plate and has its upper edge reinforced by an angle iron stiffener 11. The draft beam for the scraper is composed of spaced upper and lower draft members 12 which are provided with longitudinally spaced openings 13 at the forward end and similarly spaced openings l l at the rear end. Centrally of the angle iron 11 there is provided an opening immediately below which is a keeper 1.5 so that a pin can be passed through one of the openings 1a and into the keeper, the draft beam havingits lower member extending rearwardly of the scraper 10 as at 16 and then bent forwardly as at 17 to receive the lower end of the pivot pin 18. By this means the scraper is pivotally connected to the beam. In order to hold the scraper in angular adjustment to the beam there is provided a link 19 having longitudinally spaced openings 20 and in the angle iron 11 are provided similar openings 21 so that pins 22 may connect one of the openings 20 with the angle iron while a pin 23 passes through a selected opening 13 and one of the openings 20.
At the forward end of the draft beam there is pivoted a vertical shaft 24: adjustable in height by means of the openings 25v and pins 26 and at the lower end of this shaft is carried a pair of groin-l wheels 27. This shaft also carries the clevis 28. By means of this construction the forward end of the draft beam may be raised or lowered as desired.
Pivoted to each end of the angle bar 11 is a member 29 which is held in position by a pin 30 passing through one of the openings 31 in this member. The rearward portion of this member is bent downward and receives the lower end of the pin 30, this lower end passing through a keeper 32. It is to be noted that by reason of there being a plurality of openings 14 and 31 the vertical angle of the main scraper to the beam and the member 29 may be varied at will. Connected to the forward ends of the members 29 is a pair of links 33 which are provided with openings 84 in their free ends. Through a selected opening 13 and a selected opening 34: is a pin 35 which serves to adjust 1e angular relation betveen the member 29 and the beam 12.
Normally, these members 29 are held parallel to the beam but it will be observed that by the proper selection of the openings receiving said pin 25 the angular variation may be adjusted so as to meet any of the varying conditions of use.
Carried on the rear face of the member 10 are brackets 36 to which-arc pivoted the runners 37. This pivoting of the runners serves to permit of great freedom of movement in turning corners and passing along curves in the road while the runners themselves prevent the scraper from digging too deeply into the material to be scraped up, and also aid in rendering the draft light.
Extending rearwardly from each of the members 29 is an arm 38 to which is pivoted a covering scraper 39, best shown in Fig. 2, the two covering scrapers having their rearward portions connected by a cross bar l0 which has downwardly turned ends through which pass the bolts ll, said bolts being received in any one of the openings 4'2 of said covering scrapers. By this means the distance between the rear ends of these covering scrapers may be varied at will. As shown in F 1, these covering scrapers are omitted when thedevice is to be used for ordinary grading and in place of these covering scrapers thereis pivoted to one end of the main scraper 10 a su 'iplemental scraper 43 adapted to prevent side slip of the device after the-manner of a moldboard in a plow and which, is held parallel to the beam 12 by means of an adjustable brace 4t. connected to a rearward extension 1o formed on the beam 12 by means of .the holes at and pin 45.
