APPLICATION FILED JAN. 29. 1916. mm 3,593. Patented Jan. 23,1917. 1791 v fl j0 U CARL A. IDAHLBERG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WIND OW-B OX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL A. DAHLBERG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Vindow-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a window box for the reception and retention of articles of foods of various kinds, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and operation of the various parts thereof as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a box or receptacle of the above named general character, wherein articles of food may be kept, in moderate weather, without employing ice, in a wholesome and sanitary condition, and which box can be thoroughly ventilated in such a way as to exclude dust and insects, yet so as to create a circulation of external or pure air continuously therethrough, if desired.
A further object is to provide a window box which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable, efficient in operation, with its parts so made and arranged, that it can be readily fitted to window casings of different sizes, and in such a manner as to prevent the passage or entrance of rain, dust or wind between the supporting frame of the box, and the window casing within which the box is mounted.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.
In the accompanying drawing, which serves to illustrate an embodiment of the invention-Figure 1 is an inner face view of a portion of a window casing illustrating my improved window box in position therein, and showing a part of the lower sash of the window frame broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 3 is a fragmental plan Specification of Letters Patent.

sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of a fragment of the window casing and a part of one corner of the upper portion of the window box frame illustrating means for securing it in position within the window frame. Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of one of the corner pieces of the box frame. Fig. 6 is a similar View of a modification in the construction thereof and Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view taken on line 77 of Fig. 4, of a portion of the box frame showing the means for excluding or of the admission of rain or moisture.
Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the different views of the drawing.
The side walls of the window casing are designated by the reference numeral 10, and said casing is of the ordinary and well known construction having in each of its sides a vertical guide way 11 for a portion of the lower sash and a vertical guide way 12 for a portion of the upper sash of the casing. My improved window box is adapted to have its frame located in the grooves or channels 12 of the win low casing, which are provided for the operation of the upper sash, and the frame of the window box is located below the lower rail 13 of the upper sash and is adapted to rest on the sill l-i of the window casing, as is clearly shown in. Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The lower sash 15 of the window casing is free to act in the channels 11 of the side walls 10 of the window casing or frame in the usual manner.
The frame 16 of the window box is rectangular in shape and may be made of any suitable size, and material, but preferably of wood, and said frame has at a suitable distance below its upper horizontal rail or portion, another horizontal rail 17, which rail is provided with a series of transverse openings 18, which may be closed by means of a plate 19 pivotally secured at one of its ends to the rail 17 so that said plate or shutter can be raised or lowered so as to open a rectangular frame, of a box secured therejustably mounted on the adjacent ends of to and extended therefrom, a channeled said members at each upper corner of the member adjustabiy mounted on and embracframe. 1
ing each of the sides of said frame and the CARL A. DAHLBERG. upper portion thereof, springs interposed Witnesses:
between said members and said frame, and CHAS. C. TILLMAN,
an angular and channeled corner piece ad- A. E. OLsoN.
