IMPROVEMENT IN SWINGING RAILWAVS FOR LOADING VESSELS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. GHEESEMAN, of Gardiner, Kennebec county and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Double-Swing Derrick for Loading Vessels with Ice in tide waters, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to obviate the difficulties in loading vessels with ice from the icehouses, resulting from the rise and fall of the tide; and it consists, in connection with an elevated wharf-platform of suflicient height to allow for the fluctuations of the tide, of a doubleswing derrick and an adjustable movable plat form-car, with its Windlass and attachments, hereinafter described.
Owing to the rise and fall of the tide, in loading vessels with ice directlyfrom the houses great trouble and labor is imposed by the necessity of constantly adjusting the runs or slides upon which the ice is carried to the vessel to accommodate the tides variations. At low tide the descent is apt to he so great as to endanger the slides and to risk breakage of the ice, while at high tide, in addition to the trouble of adjusting the slides, is often imposed the necessity of pushing up the ice to reach the vessels deck. In both cases the services of many hands are required.
To avoid these difficultiesI construct a platform upon the wharf of sufficient elevation to allow for loading a vessel at high tide, connect the same by slides with the ice-house, and attach my invention.
The drawing represents my invention in perspective.
A is the elevated platform, supported in the ordinary way upon frame B, and is located near the verge of wharf Q. At its outer end and upon each side is an upright post, P, whose lower end is pivoted in a frame provided upon the Wharf, and upper end, by means of its pin p,pivoted to cross-bar D. Rods R, anchored to the wharf and looped over pins 1), hold cross-bar D in position, brace posts P, and allow them to turn upon their pivots. PostsP may be further braced by any of the known means. Upon the platform A parallel rails O G are laid and secured, which extend out to post P and are of the same gauge as their inner surfaces. Each of posts P is provided with an arm, E, at right angles with it and Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,333, dated November 28, 1871.
of the height of platform A, properly braced by iron rods m m, and to each arm is bolted a rail, L, on alevel with the inner part of rails 0. To one of these arms are hinged bars 6 c of even length, whose office, when arms E are swung over the vessel, is to secure the arms in parallel position by hooking into the staples provided upon the other arm. When arms E are thus in position their rails line with rails O O and form a continuous track. Car K is mounted upon wheels W, gauged to the described track. Its outer end carries a Windlass, U, mounted over a suitable opening in the carplatform, and duly provided with rope or chain and crates for lowering the ice. Boards S S and bar H are hinged to its inner end. The boards serve as bridges from platform A when the car is moved out over and upon arms E, and bar H, by means of its hook, catches in notches h in the floor of platform A and anchors the car in any desired position. When my invention is not in use the car is drawn back upon the platform, bars 0 c are unhooked and permit ted to swing upon their l'linges, and arms E are swung back over the wharf. In this position a vessel can he brought up for loading. The arms E are then swung out, hinged bars 0 c are hooked in their proper places, car K is moved out upon the rails of arms E and adjusted over the vessels hatch ways and there anchored by means of hooked bar H. Some movable slides connect car K with the slides from the ice-house, and the preparations are complete.
The adjustal'iility of the various parts of my invention enables a vessel to be brought in, laden, and taken out without loss of time and with very little trouble.
I claim as my invention 1. The swinging railwayin connection with the stationary railway and platform-car, constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of platform A and its stationary rails O O, pivoted post P P and their arms E E, and hinged bars 6 c with car Kandits hinged planks S S and hooked rod H, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES L. GHEESEMAN.
