Be it known that 1, Leon F. MONTGOMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Recovery, in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Soles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This ii'v'ention relates to composite soles for boots and shoes, the principal object pf the invention being to provide a sole made up of various elements and materials which will be bheaper than the ordinary sole leather sole, and which will also wear longer and bett/n.

Another" object of the invention is to provide a composite sole made of fabric, leather,

rubber, or} other suitable material and the composite portion of the sole being vulcanders 3 extending entirely around the blank and providing smooth extending marginal edges 4 for a sole leather strip about to be described. The sole leather strip 5 is of the desired width to extend from. the outer edge 6 of the base 4 to the shoulders 3, and said strip is secured to the base 4 by means of a line of stitches 7, an outer line of stitches 8 being employed to attach. the sole to the shoe. A rubber or rubber com ound material is used to incorporate the weft threads or piles 2 and to completely saturate the same, thus forming a composite sole portion consisting of rubber or other similar compound with incorporated fibers or threads extending through the compound, thus forming tread surface of rubber or compound and fibers.

be attained by means of the constructi illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which Figure 1 is a bottom plan View of a composite sole made in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the cut pile fabric forming a basis for the sole, the outer edges of the fabric having the pile threads removed to form a shoulder or basis for attaching the composite portion of the .sole to the sole leather strip which forms the outer edge portion of the sole. Fig. is a similar sectional view after the rubber or other suitable plastic material has been incorporated with the pile, or fiber threads. Fig. i is a sectional view taken on the line ii of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view made on a somewhat larger scale to show the fcharacter of fabric which may be used for making up the sole.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the woof or fabric basis of a cut piled fabric like some forms of carpet, or the fabric may be of any suitable character havingia cut piled weft 2, consisting of fibers; which extend at right angles to the woof or base 1. Any suitable fiber may be used for the weft and they may be either cut or uncut pile. At the edges of the basis 1 the weft threads are cut away to form shoulclaims; for instance, various forms of fabric may be used and various kinds of rubber compounds,

Having thus described iny invention, I claim 1. A shoe sole comprising a cut piled fabric having the weft fibers normal to one surface of its basis, said fabric having the outer edge of its weft fibers removed so that a portion of the basis projects beyond said fibers, and a marginal strip secured around the weft fibers and against said projecting portion of said. basis to prevent the spreading and lateral movement of the fibers.

Ashoe sole comprising a cut piled fabric having the weft fibers normal to one surface of its basis, a rubber compound filling for the fabric, said fabric having the weft fibers removed at the outc1',cdgc, a marginal strip secured around said outer edge having its inner vertical edge abutting the weft fibers to prevent the spreading thereof. said strip being formed integral and extending around the sole and heel, and means to secure the free ends of said strip together.
