\ VENDING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. t nt Jan. 1 1917 Application filed April 19, 1916. Serial "no. 92,204.
To all who mjz't may concern Be it known that I, RAYMOND L MEYnRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miller, in the county of Lake, State of Indiana, have invented a. new and useful Vending-Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others. skilled in the art towhich it vappertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to an improved vending machine, for vendingvarious packages and the like, and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this kindhaving an endless ca'rrier for the packages or the like in combinationjwith means controlled by a coin, for imparting an intermittent motion to the endless carrier, whereby said packages may be delivered one at a time. v
In practical fiel'dsthe details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed. e
, The invention comprises further features and'combination of parts, as hereinafter set- -forth,.. shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:Figure .1 is a view in perspective of the. vending machine constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on.
line 33 of Fig. 1.v Fig. 4Iis a sectional view on line 4-i-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line .5 5'of Fig."3,show1ng the coin controlled mea'ns 'out of engagement.
with the tooth disk, which 'isucarried by one of'the sprockets of the endlesscarrier. Fig.

arged detail sectional View of the outlet 'end'of the coin chutec opposite sides of the casing arethe upper and lower shafts 4 and 5. Each of the shafts consists of three sections, the intermediate section 6 and the two end stud sections 7 and 8. The intermediate section 6 is hollow, and into the opposite ends thereof the stud sections 7 and 8 are threadedby means of threaded on the opposite ends of the inter mediate: section 6 of the lower shaft 5, and
sprockets12 and 13 are threaded upon the opposite ends of the intermediate section 6 of the upper shaft 4. Lock nuts 14 and 15 are threaded upon the intermediate section "of the lower shaft 5, to hold the sprockets 10 and 11 in nuts 16 "and 17 threaded upon the intermediate section of the upper shaft 4, to hold place, there also being the lock the sprockets'1-2and 13 in position. Endless carrier chains 18 extend about the upper and lower sprockets 12 and 13, and 10 and .11, and these endless carrier sprocket chains are connected by" the rods 19, which pass through the sleeves 20 ofthe extensions 21 of the package supporting or. carrying Sprockets 10 and 11 are It is to benote'd that the carrier sprocket I chains move in the direction of the arrow a,
. therefore,'y when the supporting shelves 22 are moving downwardly carrying any suit- "jable packagestobevended, said shelves are held supported in horizontal position by meansof the chains '23. However, when the supporting shelves 22 are moving upwardly,
as shown in Fig. 2 they 'are-sus pended downwardly. Secured to the sprocket wheel 10 by means of the stud pins 24 is a disk 25 having teeth 26 or lugs which are L-shaped as shownin- Fig. 4. ,Theselugs are at considerable s aced intervals apart. Secured.
upon the s aft, 5, for instance to the stud section 8 by means of, the pin 27 isan an-.
gular lever 28; the arm29- of which at its extremity is. provided with a lateral extending pin 30,*-..,a'dapted to enga e one or another of that-shaped lugs '26 o the disk 25, whenit is desired to move the endless -ca.rrier.- Secured ito 'oneside of the casing 1 of the machine is 1a bracket- 31, to which a spring detent 32 is secured. The extremity 'of thisjspringfdetent, in elevation as shown in Fig. 4 is angular, and which right angular portion-in plan view extends laterally,;and is provided with a cutaway part 34,, the purpose of which will appear later.
The extremity of the lateral portion of the right angle part is provided with an enlargement 35, of the shape shown in Fig. 4 to sweep against the peripheral edge of the disk 25, so as to frictionally stop the same in its'movement. The arm 36 of the lever 28 is designed to engage the enlargement 35 at the extremity of the lateral part of the detent, that is when the lever 28 is moved in the direction of the arrow 1) to disengage the enlargement from the edge of the disk 25, so that the disk may be rotated, as well as the sprockets and the carrier chains. Also attached to the arm 29 of the lever 28 is a rod 38 extending through the front wall of the casing 1 and is provided with a hand hold or knob 39, whereby the rod 38 may be actuated. On the rod 38 is an integral collar 40 to engage the inner face of thefront wall of the casing 1, to limit the rod 38 in its outward movement. A coin or slug chute 41 extends from the front wall of the easing 1 downwardly and rearwardly and terminates in a curved portion 42, the extremity 43 of which is flat and rests upon ashelf 44: of one side of the casing. When a coin or slug is deposited in the chute 41 it slides or travels until it reaches the flat extremity 43 of the chute, where it engages between one face of the disk 25 and. the shoulder 46 of'the flat extremity. The coin or slug in this position is directly in the path of the arm 29 of the lever 28. When the rod 38 is pulled outwardly, the arm 29 of the lever 28 forces its way between the coin or slug and one face of the disk 25. This action pushes the lever 28 laterally toward thedisk, sufiiciently so that the lugv 30 will engage one of the L-shaped lugs 26,
at the same time the extremity of the arm- 36 of the lever 28 engages the enlargement 35 of the lateral portion of said detent, thereby frictionally releasing the disk 25. Upon further'movement of the rod 38 outwardly from the casing, the endless carrier is moved sufliciently until the collar 40 engages the front wall of the casing, whereby one of the supporting shelves ma deliver a package through the opening d8 of the casing 1. When the rod 38 is released, the spring 49 (one end of which is connected to the arm 29 of the lever 28 and the other end is connected at 50 to the casing 1) returns the lever 28 to its normal position, the arm 29 in thus moving throws the slug or coin rearwardly through the opening 50 at the rear of the flat part 43 of the chute, which coin or slug drops down into the lower part the casing is somewhat filled with slugs or cointhey may be removed by opening the.
closure 52. The inlet part ofthe coin chute 4:1 is covered by suitable plates 53 having av slot 54, one end of which'i'sprovided with, a lug 55. This slot 54 is just ofa size to action of its spring. 1
receive the form of a slug 56 shown in Fig. 11, there being a groove 57 extending partially of the edge of the slug so as to receive the lug 55.
It is the object of the owners of a machine of this kind to sell the slugs to the patrons, therefore, slugs designed especially to pass through the opening 54 can only be used.
The front of the casing 1 is provided with a suitable glass or other transparent closure 60.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is,:-
1. In va package vending machine, the combination of a revoluble member provided with a plurality of L-shaped lugs and a shaft on which said revoluble memberis mounted, of a detent bearing frictionally on said revoluble member to retard the same in its movement, a rocking lever spring tensioned comprising two arms and adapted to be shifted axially on said shaft when rocked,
