Description
R. A. PARENT.
.AUTOMATIC INSULA APPLICATION FILED MAY2 16.

By this simple construction it will be seen that the wire may be very quickly placed in engagement with the insulatorand because of the simple and durable construction 'of'this insulator the possibility of the same becoming'broken or out of order when:
in use is greatly minimized r If it is desired to remove the w1re the wire may be grippedand then by pulling upwardly uponthewire it will be removed from the binding action ofthe wedging ribs 8. 7 It will be noted that: when the blocks are in engagement with the frame they will be positively held against'side movementby' the fitting of the fingers-2 and 4' within the verticalchannels 10, while they-Fwill be held against vertical movement byresting upon the base'arms 1 and by the engagement of the lip 5 and thenut 11. p It is, of course, obvious that under some conditions'it may be desired to support the insulator upon the sidenportions of a post 'iinger 4:
orinfact upon various vertically positioned structures; In order to accomplish this function the frame as shown in'Fig. 5 is employed. Thisframe comprises a base 1- havingvertical side fingers 2 and 4?. The
therefore, the operation of the insulator is in all respects similar to operation offthe preferred form. -However, a screw 13,.is formed 'upon the finger so as to extendfrom the side portionsof the frame, where I byfthe screw-may be screwed into a'vertical supporting structure, althoughthe frame will be carried in .a horizontal positionfso as to carry the blocks in the same manner they are carried in the preferred form. 7
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very efficient, simple,1and-durable automaticinsulator has been provided,
wherein the blocks are provided with central'wedging ribs so that a wire a-fter'being.
drawn tautly across the upper portion of the insulatormay. be moved downwardly between'the ribs and bythe wedging action 'of theiribs be held'in a taut condition. It. wlllifurther be seen that the. construction of theframe is such as to permit the same tozbe easily carried upon a supporting structure, whilethe side arms ofthe'frameby fitting withinthe' channels of the blocks will hold the blocks against displacement, to-
getheriwith the assistance ofthe overhang inglipand the nut as hereinbefore set forth. ltwill be noted by referring particularly toliig; 3 that as the wire 12is wedged between the central ribs 8 it will normally be held from -slippingas hereinbefore stated. 7 If, however, undue strain isbrought to bear isprovided, with an overhanging a v3. An insulator. of
in one directionupon the wire, it will cause the two blocks topivot' upon the arms 4: of
the supporting frame, swinging] the two ends 9 thereofinto a clamping engagement withthe wire, as shown clearly dotted,
' lines in Fig.3, and thustwo points of binding" action will be exerted upon the wire,
namely: the central ribs and the two clamping ends of the blocks; It will be seen that in this'manner the wire will be eflic ently held from slipping and that the. blocks may pivotiin either direction in accordance with the manner-in which the wire isbeing pulled is ,7 What isclaimed is: '1'. An insulator of the tions and tapering toward their outer:por-' class described, :comprisi-nga pluralityfof blocks, means 'for r supporting "said blocks, wedging ribs iiorm'ed. upon the inner faces of said blocks,
saidribs being. enlarged attheir lower pore tions, thereby providing'anenlarged"en trance therebetween, whereby a wire maybe passed between said" ribs until the samebe- I comes wedged, thereby causing the wir'ei to be efficiently supported by "said blocks 2. An insulator of the classcdescribcd,
comprising a plurality of blocks, imeans for supportingsaid blocks," said blocks comprising elongated bodies, wedging ribs formed upon the inner faces of saidblocks,
said wedging ribshaving widened enlarged lower-portions, said ribs tapering so'asto p be considerably reduced at their outer ends, V
ice
thereby providing a widened entrance open ing, the ends of said-blocks being formed in'a plane to the rearof the inner bearing faces of said wedging ribs, whereby a wire may bequickly and easily passed between the outer portions of saidribs and then by 'beingvmoved inwardly thereon: will finally wedge between the ribs and thus be retained by the insulator. p
comprising a plurality ofblocks, said blocks provided with channels in. their I side portions, a frame supporting saidblocks and the class described, in)
fitting within" said; channels, ,wherebysaid blocks will be I held in engagement with each other, and-means carried by said blocks for gripping a wire and automatically holding the same therebetween'.
4. An. insulator 'of the class described,
cal fingers extending from said basefarms said blocks will be held against side displacement, andmeans carried' by said blocks comprising a plurality of blocks having vertical channels in their outer side portions, a frame having base'arm's fitting upon said blocks for supportingthe same, vertiand fitting within said channels, iwhereby" for engagino' a wire and holding the same ii'n engagementwiththe insulator.
