Description
UNITED. STATES PATENT QFFICEo ALONZO S. HEWLETT, OF SEBASTOPOL, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR PLANERS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,248, dated November 28,1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALONZO S. HEWLETT, of
' Sebastopol, county of Sonoma, State of Califorupon planing-machines in such a position as to press upon the board or stick which is being planed and prevent it from splitting or chipping when the planing bits are cutting across or against the grainof the Wood. My chip-breaker is intended to be used more particularly where the edges of boards are to be planed so as to match each other, such as rustic and other similar Work.
In order to explain my invention so that others will be able to understand its construction and operation, reference ishad to the accompanying drawing forming apart of this specication, in which- A represents a presser-foot, having a shank, B, and spindle G. The shank and spindle are formed of the saine piece of metal, but are made to stand in separate planes by an angular bend in the bar, as shown. This is done for reasons hereinafter explained. D is a flat metal plate, having a circular recess, e, at one side; and E is a barrel which is united to the plate D on the side opposite the circular recess e. The spindle C passes through the barrel E, and a spiral or other spring, f, surrounds it inside of the barrel, bearing against a shoulder, h, on the spindle. The shank B lies upon and extends beyond the plate D at one side of the circular recess e, where tis held in place by an angular clasp, 7', upon one side and a screw, i, upon the opposite side, which allows it to move in or out as the spring fis compressed or expanded. This throws the presser-foot A out beyond the plate so that it can bear against the edge of the board which is being planed. The plate D is to be secured horizontally to the planing-machine, so that the planer-head will revolve in the circular recess c. The presser-foot A will then bear against the edge of the board just before it reaches the bits to be planed, and prevent it from splitting or chipping by compressing the wood and compelling the bits to make a clean cut. The long arm of the presser-foot is hollowed at m, in which the surface presser-roller which holds the boards down upon the table revolves.
By the use of this device a great saving in lumber can be effected and the matching accomplished much more satisfactorily than when the work is attempted Without it.
I am aware that various presser devices have been applied to the surface of lumber while being planed, a-nd this I do not claim. I am aware that the patent of S. M. Richardson for cutterheads, No. 60,787, and dated January 1,1867, shows an adjustable presser-foot; and, therefore, I do not claim, broadly, such a foot; but
What I do claim is- The presser-foot A with its shank B and spindle C, said spindle passing through a barrel, E, and held in place by a spring, f, in combination with the plate D provided with a recess, e, and having the clasp j, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness that the above-described invention is claimed by me I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
