COMBINATION COAL AND GAS RANGE.
Application filed January 12, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM ABIGT and EDWARD B. LEONARD, citizens of the United States, residing at Evansville, county of Vanderburg, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Coal and Gas Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination coal and gas ranges.
The present invention has for its objects, first, to provide a combination coal and gas range wherein the gas burners and air supplying means are arranged in an improved manner in relation to the fire-box and oven; second, the provision, in a gas range, whether combined with a coal range or not, of gas burners and a novel casing whereby the burners are inclosed and the heat is directed into both the top and the bottom of the oven; third, the provision in either a gas range or a combination coal and gas range of an air and gas mixing damper which is under the control of the different valves which regulate the gas supply so that air is admitted or shut 011' on the operation of the valve of any one of the burners; fourth, the provision in either a gas range or a combination coal and gas range, of a novel arrangement of burner casings, air inlet, air damper and gas controlling valves; fifth, the provision of an air damper in combination with the gas burner valve handle or operating device, whereby the handle or operating device is automatically locked by its cooperation with the damper and the damper is held open when the valve is open.
Other objects of the invention will appear more fully from the following description which sets forth, in connection with the drawings, one embodiment of the invention and is to be deemed as illustrative, rather than restrictive, of the scope of the invention, as the latter is subject to modification without departing from the essential principles thereof.
While we have shown and described our invention as applied to a combination coal and gas range, we do not thereby limit ourselves to such use inasmuch as several features of our invention may be embodied, as shown and described, or as modified, in a gas range only.

The oven 1 has a flue 2 at the top, flue 3 at the end and flue 4: at the bottom. The fire-box 5 is for the use of coal or wood when the range is to be heated by ordinary fuel. Interposed between the fire-box 5 and the vertical burner wall 6 of the oven 1 is the improved casing comprising the upper casing 7 and lower casing 8 which extend completely across the range and house the upper gas burner 9 and lower gas burners 10 and 11. In addition to these casings, there is a wall or casing 12 which constitutes one side of the fire-box 5 and extends completely across the range. The walls 13 and 14 of the casings 7 and 8 are inclined and serve as heat deflectors to direct the heat from the burners 9, 10 and 11 to the openings 15 and 16 at the top and bottom of the oven. The casings 7 and 8 are completely shut off from each other by the central partition 17 so that the burner 9 constitutes the means for delivering heat to the opening 15 and the burners 10 and 11 serve to induce heat to pass through the openings 16 into the bot tom of the oven. Means are thus provided for supplying heat solely to the bottom of the oven, solely to the top thereof, or to both the top and bottom, the control being the valves for the respective burners 9,10 and 11.
We wish it understood that the burners, their casings and the valves and damper can be used at another position in respect to the oven, if desired, instead of in the position shown.
The walls of the casings 7 and 8 are provided with air inlets or openings 18, 19 and 20 extending the full width of the casings and adapted to admit air to the respective burners 9, 10 and 11, the air supply coming from the inlet 21and. if the damper is open,
entering the casing 12.
The damper 22 extends the full width of the casings 7 8 and 12, and is carried at its upper end by a pivot shaft 23 sothat 1t is adapted to swing within the casing 12 for the purpose of closing or opening the a r inlets or ports 18, 19 and 20. The damper is provided with ribs 24 extending the full width thereof to seat above and below the port 18; with other ribs 25 to seat above Patented Jan. 16, 1917. v
and below the port 19 and with still further .ribs 26 to seat above and below the port 20,
and there is also provided on the casing S, rib 27 to still further close the joint between the damper and the casing in the region of the port 20. The bottom 28 of the damper has a rib 29 adapted to bear against the bottom of the casing 12 and to be disposed over the mouth of the inlet 21 and to abut the entrant portion of the casing 8 at the point 30. hen the damper is closed, as shown in fulllines, the supply of air from the inlet 21 is cut off from the interior of casing 12, and the ports 18', 19 and 20 are closed so that no air, or substantially none, is supplied to the casings 7 and 8. When, however, the damper is swung aside, as shown in dotted lines, not only is the air admitted into the casing 12 from the inlet 21, but the ports 18, 19 and 20 are uncovered and air is admitted to casings 7 and 8. If the gas is turned into burner 9 and ignited, the heated air will pass into the upper part of the oven through the opening 15,'but if said burner is not lighted, there will be nothing but a supply of fresh air into the upper part of the oven if burners 10, 11 are lighted. The same condition prevails with respect to burners 10 and 11. If the gas is ignited, the air entering the ports 19 and 20 will mix with the gas and the heat will pass through the opening 16 into the lower portion of the oven. On the other hand, if
' the burner 9 is ignited, the damper 22 hav ing been opened, fresh air only will enter the ports 19 and 20 and pass into the casing 8. e, consequently, provide means for admitting the heat to either the top or the bottom of the oven or to both the top and bottom and the air supply for the ports 18, 19 and 20 is under the control of the single damper 22.
When the gas burners are not being used, the damper 22 will be closed so that the oven 1 may be heated from the fire-box 5 by the heat passing into the flues 2, 3 and 4-.

Located at the front of the range is a valve 31 having a. handle 32 and adapted for controlling the admission of gas to the burner 9. Another valve 33 having a handle 34 controls the admission of gas to the burners 1.0 and 11. Rigidly connected to the front damper 22, or formed integral therewith, is an arm 35 which has a free forked end 35 adapted to normally straddle the handle 32 but not connected thereto and keep the valve 31 locked in closed position shown in full lines in Figs. 2 and 3. When thevalve handle 32 is to be turned from the 011' position to the on position shown in dotted lines, the arm 35 is first swung down by hand and the handle 32 is thus freed position or in any intermediate position between com aletelv OE and com letel on.
When the handle 32 is returned to the full line position, the natural gravitation of the damper 22 will cause the latter to close and the fork 35 will reengage the handle 32. An arm 36 similar to arm 35, cooperates with the handle 34: for a similar purpose. In consequence, the handles 32 and 34: may be independently operated without affecting the other one of said handles and its valve, and whichever handle is operated, the damper 22 will be swung aside to admit air from the inlet 21 to all of the ports 18, 19 and 20, and when the handle has been returned to normal position to cut off the supply of gas, the damper will close. V
Having thus described our invention,what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a combination coal and gas range, an oven, a fire-box for solid fuel, aflue for conducting the heat from the fire-box so that it will heat the oven, a multiple chamber or compartment casing located between the fire-box and the oven, the respective chambers of said casing being independently in communication with different parts of the oven, and gaseous fuel burners located in the respective compartments or chambers of said casing. V
2. In a combination coal and gas range, an oven, a fire-box for solid fuel, a fiue for conducting the heat from the fire-box so that it will heat the oven, a multiple chamber or compartment casing located between the fire-box and the oven, the respective chambers of said casing being independently in communication with different parts of. the oven, gaseous fuel burners located in the respective compartments or chambers of said casing, an air chamber located adjacent ports communicating with the respective compartments, means for controlling the 7 flow of gas to the respective burners, and an air damper operable in the air chamber and adapted for opening or closing all of said port-s. v
3. In a combination coal and gas range, an oven, a firebox for solid fuel, a flue for conducting the heat from the fire-boX so that it will heat the oven, a multiple chamher or compartment casing located between the fire-box and the oven, the respective chambers of said casing being independently in communication with different parts of the oven, gaseous fuel burners located in the respective compartments or chambers of said casing, an air chamber located adjacent the compartments of the casing and having ports communicating with the respective compartments, means for controlling the flow of gas to the respective burners, an air damper operable in the air chamber and adapted for opening or closing all of said ports, and devices under the control of the respective burner-controlling means, each adapted to cause opening of the damper when the gas is turned on and closing of the damper when the gas is turned off from the given burner controlled by said means.
4. In a gas range, the combination with an oven, of a plurality of casings respectively in communication with different parts of the oven, independent gas burners in the respective compartments, means for independently controlling the admission of gas to the respective burners, and means com mon to all the casings adapted to jointly and independently control the admission of air to all of them.
5. In a gas range, the combination with an oven, of a plurality of casings respectively in communication with different parts of the oven, independent gas burners in the respective compartments, means for independently controlling the admission of gas to the respective burners, and means common to all the casings adapted to jointly and independently control the admission of air to all of them, said air controlling means being operable by the gas controlling means of any of the gas burners.
6. In a gas range the combination with an oven, of a plurality of independent cas-.
ings, each adapted to convey heat to the oven, of gas burners in the respective casings, independent gas admission devices for the respective burners, an air casing, a movable damper adapted to play to and fro in said air casing, said gas burner casings having ports communicating with the air casing and said damper being adapted to jointly open or close said ports whereby the air supply to all of the casing is under a common control by said damper.
7. In a gas range, the combination with an oven, of a plurality of independent casings, each adapted to convey heat to the oven, of gas burners in the respective casings, independent gas admission devices for the respective burners, an air casing, a movable damper adapted to play to and fro in said air casing, said gas burner casings having ports communicating with the air casing and said damper being adapted to jointly open or close said ports whereby the air supply to all of the casings is under a common control by said damper, and means under the control of each of the respective gas admission devices adapted to operate the damper when any one of said gas admission devices is operated.
8. In a gas range, the combination with an oven, of a plurality of casings respec tively adapted to convey heat to said oven, independent gas burners in the respective casings, independent gas admission controlling devices for the respective gas burners, an air casing, an inlet for said air casing, said gas burner casings having ports communicating with the air casing, a swingingly mounted L-shaped damper adapted to control the ports and the inlet aforesaid, and arms carried by the damper and adapted to cooperate with the gas admission controlling devices, whereby on the opening or closing of any gas admission controlling device, said damper will be swung to open or close the ports and the air inlet.
9. The combination with a gas burner, of a self-closing damper, a valve controlling the supply of gas to the burner, a valve handle projecting freely from the valve, and an arm carried by, and movable with, the damper which is adapted to directly cooperate with the valve handle at different points to lock the valve in closed position and to be engaged by the valve-operating device when the valve is in open position to thereby hold the damper open.
10. The combination with a plurality of gas burners and a damper, of a plurality of valves controlling the supply of gas to the respective burners, said valves having operating handles projecting freely therefrom, independent arms carried by the damper, respectively, adapted to directly engage with and lock the respective valve handles when the valves are in closed position, the valves being adapted for opening and closing independently of each other and said arms respectively engaging a valve handle when it is operated to open its valve to thereby hold the damper open independently of the condition of the remaining valves.
