To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HILARY J. HENNEssY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet lVinding Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification, reference being given therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates particularly to ratchet winding mechanisms of hopper door operating shafts for cars and coal chutes, and handbrake shafts of passengerV and freight cars. j
The object of my invention is to provide a lever operated mechanism, wherein the possibility of danger tothe operator is entirely eliminated, when releasing, while under load.
Another object of this invention, is to provide a ratchet winding mechanism wherein the customary dog or pawl is eliminated, thereby making it very easyby positive action to release load. j
With the preceding and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be described, illustrated and claimed.
Reference will now be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, the letters in the referenceV designate the corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the assembled ratchet winding mechanism which Shows the shaft in a horizontal position and the lever in the vertical position. As the position of the shaft will not interfere with the operation of this device, I show it in this position so as to more clearly illustrate the several views. Fig. 2 is a side elevation and partial section of the several parts assembled in their respective positions.

I will now explain the operation of my invention: In winding, operating lever i is moved back and forth which transmits the motion to lever ratchet It which engages with shaft ratchet wheel c turning winding shaft b At the end of each stroke shaft ratchet wheel c engages with combined journal bearing and ratchet al which holds the load until another purchase is procured. While in the drawings, forming a part of this application there is illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that the elements therein can be varied or changed as to shape, proportion and exact manner of assemblage, without departing from the spirit of the invention. Having designated and described the several parts and the operation of each sufliciently clear to enable those skilled' in the art to thoroughly understand the same, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a ratchet Winding mechanism, the
combination With a Winding shaft of a com- A bined journal bearing and ratchet, and a Winding shaft ratchet Wheel and a lever ratchet substantially as described.
2. In j a ratchet Winding mechanism, a Winding shaft, a combined journal bearing and ratchet, a Winding shaft ratchet Wheel having an extended hub, and mounted upon said Winding shaft, and a lever ratchet, loosely mounted on the said extended hub of said Winding shaft ratchet Wheel.
3. In a ratchet Winding mechanism, the combination With a Winding shaft, of a combined journal bearing and ratchet With integral teeth, and a Winding shaft ratchet Wheel With integral teeth on both sides thereof, and an extended hub secured to said Winding shaft for longitudinal movement but to prevent rotation about said Winding shaft, of a lever ratchet With integral teeth and an extended hub loosely mounted upon the hub of said Winding shaft ratchet Wheel, so as to allow longitudinal travel and rotation around hub of said Winding shaft ratchet Wheel and held from moving off hub of said Winding shaft ratchet Wheel by a collar secured t0 last named hub substantially as described.
4. In a ratchet Winding mechanism, the combination With a Winding shaft of a combined journal bearing and ratchet and a Winding shaft ratchet Wheel and a lever ratchet of ak spring to keep'said Winding shaft ratchet Wheel in mesh with said coma bined journal bearing and ratchet, substantially as described.
5.
