ADOLPHE GARRIVIER, 0F TOULOUSE, FRANCE.
MONOLITHIC CONCRETE BLOCKS ADAPTEl) '10 SNUGLY FIT THE RAILS.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ADOLPHE GARRIVIER, a citizen of the Republic of France, and a resident of 56 Rue des Chalets, Toulouse, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Monolithic Concrete Blocks Adapted to Snugly Fit the Rails, of which the following is a description.
The present invention relates to monolithic concrete blocks or pavements, with inner metallic reinforcement bars, for use in the construction of railway and tramway tracks, said blocks having such a form as to snugly fit the exterior profile of the rail, on both sides thereof, and being provided with recesses for housing the fish-plates with their bolts and the rail tie-bars maintaining the normal gage of the track.
The annexed drawing shows, by way of example, a perspective view of a rail fitted with two blocks constructed according to the present invention.
On both sides of each rail a of a railway or tramway track are arranged monolithic concrete blocks or pavements, the one, b, outwardly of the rail, the other, 0, on the interior side thereof; said blocks are provided with inner metallic reinforcement bars, respectively b and 0 Said blocks snugly fit the external profile of the rail and are of a shape corresponding to the base, to the web and to the head of the rail, so as to engage exactly every part thereof. The blocks substantially are of the same width as the usual paving-stones, but preferably are of a greater length; their size may be varied according to the kind of rail with which they are to be used.
In the monolithic blocks for use at the joints of rails, recesses (Z are provided for the fish-plates e and their bolts e in the face of the blocks adapted to fit the web of the rail, said recesses having the same height as the fish-plates and having a depth equal to the total thickness of the fish-plates and of the head of the bolt or of the screw. The holes of said recesses are filled with a fatty body in order to prevent wear by rust of Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 1, 1916. Serial No. 101,121.
against the rails of a track, at the points where said rails are connected together by tie-bars, are provided grooves 7, whose width is equal to the thickness of said tie-bars; the block is laid between the rails, care being had to engage the tie-bar 9 into the groove f; the block is then pushed against the interior face of the tie-bar by sliding on said rail.
Obviously there may be given different shapes to the blocks in order to permit their engagement with the rails at the curves, at the switch-points, etc.
These blocks, snugly fitting on each side the profile of the rail, give to the track a greater strength and a more complete stiffness; they further prevent water infiltrations between the rail and the adjacent paving-stones and furnish a good roadway for the carriages whose gage is not exactly the same as the gage of the tramways tracks.
What I claim is:
1. A paving block of the type described, comprising a monolith having a face shaped to the profile of a rail but recessed on this face to receive a fish-plate and its securing bolt together with rust-preventing material in said recess in the assembled rail and block, and surrounding the bolt end to prevent rusting of the latter.
2. A paving block of the type described, comprising a monolith having a face shaped to the profile of a rail, and transversely grooved on its bottom face to receive a tie bar extending from the rail.
3. A paving block of the type described, comprising a monolith having a face shaped to the profile of a rail but recessed on this face to receive a fish-plate and its securing bolt, and transversely grooved on its bottom face to receive a tie bar extending from the rail.
4. A paving block of the type described, comprising an interiorly reinforced cementitious monolith having a face shaped to the profile of a rail but recessed on this face to receive a fish-plate and its securing bolt, and transversely grooved on its bottom face to receive a tie bar extending from the rail.
5. A paving block of the type described, having a face fitting against the side of a rail and transversely grooved in its lower face to receive a tie bar on which said block may be temporarily supported.
6. A paving block of the type described,
' on its 0,111 ijac'eioreciie. itle bamxtending from the rail, and havingJLiace shaped to the profile gf th elrail butpecgssed on this face to receive a fish-plate and it's stance in said rceS.
