TE SFAS FA f l THOMAS W. YOUN GER AND OTTO B. SCHOENKY, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNORS TO HOLMES FORSYTI-l', OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
METAL DIAPHRAGM FOR CAR-VESTIBULES.
Application led July 15, 1914, Serial No. 851,034.
T0 all whom t may concern: i
Be it known that we, THOMAS WV. YOUNGER and OTTO B. SoHonNKY, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metal Diaphragms for 'Oar-Vestibules, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to diaphragms for the vestibules of railway passenger cars.
One of the principal objects of our invention is to provide a diaphragm for car vestibules which is cheap and durable and which is not liable to be injured while in service.
Further objects are to attain certain advantages as will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists in two arched metal plates which are secured to the frame of a car and to the vestibule face plate respectively, and which t telescopically together to form a tight joint, while permitting a movement of the vestibule face plate to and from the frame of the car.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, and in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of the vestibule of a passenger car with a diaphragm embodying my invention applied thereto, the lefthand half of said Fig. 1 being an end elevation showing the vestibule face plate, and the right-hand half of said Fig. 1 being a vertical section through the diaphragm; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section through the middle of the vestibule of a passenger car showing the diaphragm applied thereto; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top view of the vestibule of a passenger car, the left-hand half of said Fig. 3 being a plan showing the vestibule face plate and dia- Y phragm, the roof of the car being removed; and the right-hand half of said Fig. 3 being a horizontal section through the vestibule face plate and diaphragm, with parts of the floor of the vestibule and of the bulfer plate broken away; Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical section through the vestibule face plate and diaphragm.
In the construction of vestibules of rail- Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 9, 1217.
Renewed November 24, 1916. Serial No. 133,267.
. stems 3 are pivotally connected to the buffer plate 2 and are pressed outwardly from the car by side buffer springs 5. Engaging the buffer plate 2 is a center buer stem 6 which is pressed outwardly from the car by center buffer springs 7 The upper part of the vestibule face plate 1 is pressed outwardly from the car by two buffer stems 8 and corresponding buifer springs 9. A. foot plate 10 is secured to the floor of the platform of the car and projects over the bu'er plate 2.
The diaphragm for the vestibule comprises a metal plate 11 which is arched or curved in an inverted U shape. One edge portion of the plate 11 is bent at right angles to said plate and is fastened by screws 12 or other suitable means to the door frame 13 of the doorway in the outer wall of the platform of the car. Cooperating with the plate 11 is another metal plate 14, one edge portion v of which is bent at right angles to said plate 14, and fastened by screws 15 or other suit able means to the vestibule face plate l. One of the plates 11 and 14, preferably the outer plate 14, fits telescopically within the other plate. The free edge portion of each of the plates 11 and 14 has a rebend 16 which contacts with the other plate. ln the upper face of the outer plate 14 is a water groove 17 which extends across the arched top of said outer plate, preferably near the outer edge of the other plate 11, when said plates are in their normal position. A curtain 8 is arranged to be extended across the inside faces of the upright portions of the plates 11 and 14 in the usual-way.
Asthe vestibule face plate 1 moves back andforth relative to the car, the plates 11 and 14 slide on each other to permit such movement of the vestibule face plate, while maintaining a tight joint between said plates. The plates 11 and 14 may be made of any kind of metal, but are preferably thin steel plates which are slightly resilient. Since the diaphragm is made of metal plates, it cannot be easily injured, either maliciously by tramps, or accidentally; nor can it be burned by hot cinders. A diaphragm of metal plates will be more durable and will withstand the weather better than the cloth diaphragm now generally used. The water groove 17 guides the water sidewise from the outer plate 14 instead of against the joint between the plates 14 and l1.
l/Vhile a diaphragm embodying the invention has been shown applied to the usual vestibule construction, it is not limited in use to this construction. The plate l1 and the plate let may each be made of separate plates, if desired, instead of one plate, as shown and described. Other changes may be made in the particular construction which is shown and described without departing from our invention and we do not wish to Copies of this patent may be obtained for be limited to the details of this particular construction.
What we claim is:
A diaphragm for car vestibules comprising two arched plates tting together telescopically and adapted to be secured between the vestibule face plate and the frame of a car, the outer plate having a water groove in the upper face yof its arched portion.
Signed at Sacramento, California, this 8th day of July, 1911i.
