Our invention relates to valve mechanism for automatically effecting the admission of a limited quantity of steam, directly from the boilerrto the valve chests and c vlindcrs ot' a locomotive engine, during the periods in which the locomotive is drifting, or running with its throttle valve closed, in order to prevent the formation ot' a vacuum in the cylinders, to afford proper lubrication to the cylinders, and to prevent the carbonization of oil therein.
In a separate application for Letters Patent filed by ns ot' even date, herewith, Ser. No. 115781, we have set forth a drifting Valve mechanism of the type above specified.

In the practice of our invention, referring descriptivcly to tho specific embodiment thereof' which is exemplified in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive. two intercepting reservoirs, 14,'a1'e provided, one of said reservoirs and one drifting valve chest, l, for each of the' distribution valve chests,` 2, of the locomotive, which communicate by ports (not shown) with'the cylinders, 13,` in the usual manner. The intercepting reservoirs and the drifting valve chests, and their connections and contained mechanism, being similar, in all particulars of construction and operation, the description of those located on one sideof the locomotive will beunderstood as being equally applicable to those on the other side.

in the construction of our application Ser. No. 115,781to measure out from each of its chambers, adefinite quantity of steamV for delivery to the adjacent engine cylinder, the drifting valve operating so that one chamber of each reservoir is in communication with the cylinder at any given time, and, when'in such communication, not communicating with the steam supply.

It will, of course, be understood that the admission of steam to the su erheater header, 12, with which the shut o cates, and which communicates with the main steam supply pipe, 12, and the outside steam pipes, 4, is controlled -by a throttle valve, 1n the ordinary manner. The shut off valve mechanism, which is illustrated in y Fig. 14, does, in and of itself not form part of our present invention, and being, moreover, fully described and shown in our application Ser. No. 115781 aforesaid, it will not be herein in detail set forth.
The drifting valve supply pipe, 9, communicates through the passages, 1k and 1k", and through ports, 1f, in the bushings, 1, with the interior of said bushings, and communication is established between the interior of the bushings and the pipes, 14N and 14, leading to the chambers of the intercepting reservoir` 414, through ports, 1, formed in the bushings, when said ports are opened by the drifting valves. A set screw, 7, engaging the casing, 1, and entering a longitudinal groove in the bridge piece,prevents the drifting valves from turning in the bushings. Springs, 7e, interposed be-l tween the drifting valves and the casing heads, 1m, serve to return the drifting valves to the normal central position shown in Fig. 3, when they are not in operation, and drain pipes, 1h and 1, lead from the casing to suitable points of discharge.
A special novel `and advantageous feature of our invention consists in means for rendering the major portion of the mechanism inoperative when the locomotive is Working under normal conditions, z'. e., running with open throttle, and thereby reducing wear to a minimum. To this end, the operating shaft is provided with an automatically o erable clutch mechanism which will now e described. The operating shaft, 17, carries on one of its ends, a clutch collar, 17, which engages an adjoining clutch socket, 18, formed on the upper end of an arm, 18and fitted freely on the operating shaft, adjacent to a bearing, 19, on a bracket, 19, bolted to the drifting valve case, the outer end of the operating shaft being journaled in said bearing. Longitudinal movement of the. clutch socket and arm, 18, relatively to the operating shaft, is prevented by a segmental bearing, 18", on the clutch socket, which abuts against a projection on the bracket, 19. In a. driftin valve mechanism for locoination of a double chambered intercepting reservoir; an independent drifting valve casing communicating therewith, with the steam s ace of a locomotive boilerz and with a ocomotive cylinder; two'drlfting valves fitted in said casing, each controlling communication, alternately, between the locomotive boiler and one of the chambers of the intercepting reservoir and between said chamber and the cylinder; and means for actuating said valves by a moving member of a locomotive.
7. In a driftin 'valve mechanism for locoination of a double chambered intercepting reservoir; an independent drifting valve casing communicating therewith, with the steam space of a locomotive boiler,
valves fitted in said casing, each alternately, beand one of the chambers of the intercepting reservoir and betweensaid chamber and the cylinder; and connections cou lin said valves to a moving member of the distribution valve gear of the locomotive. f

In a riftin va ve mechanism for locomotives, the com ination of a drifting valve casing, communicatin with connections, eac leading to an intel'- cepting reservoir chamber and communieating, intermediate thereo with a connection leading to a locomotive cylinder; 'a boiler steam supply pipe; two connected drifting valves, fitted to reciprocate in the casing, each controlling communication, alternately, between the boiler steam supply pipe and one of the reservoir chamber connections, and between the cylinder connection; a vibratory operating shaft journaled in the casing; an arm tween the boiler steam supply pipe and one' ofthe reservoir chamber connections and between said connection and the cylinder connection; a vibratory operating shaft, journaled, with the capacity of longitudinal movement, in the casing; an arm connected to said shaft and coupled to the drifting' valves; an operating arm fitted freely on said shaft and adapted for connection toaa clutch moving member of the locomotive; member lixed on said arm; a clutch member fixed on the operating shaft and adapted to engage the clutch member of the operating arm; a piston fixed on the o erating shaft a4 port leading from the cylind) thecasing to one side of said piston; and a spring bearing on the opposite sideof said piston.
