To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM SCHWARTZ- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bracelets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof.
This invention relates generally to jewelry and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful improvement, in jewelry bracelets, the principal object of my present invention being to provide an attractive and comparatively simple and inexpensive expansible bracelet of the endless or socalled Nethersole type.
With the above and other objects in view, my present invention resides in the provision of an expansible bracelet comprising a plurality of elastic units permanently connected together in ring form and in certain novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention in preferred form, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an expansible bracelet embodying my invention, the bracelet being shown in normal or contracted condition; Fig. 2 is a side elevation view of the bracelet in abnormal or expanded condition; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view of the bracelet in abnormal or expanded condition; Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view through the bracelet in abnormal or expanded condition; Fig. 5 is a similar view through the bracelet in normal or contracted condition; Fig. 6 is also an enlarged fragmentary sectional view through the bracelet in normal or contracted condition, but taken at right angles approximately to the sectional view of the bracelet shown in Fig. 5; Figs. 7 and 8 are'persoeetive views, respectively, of the outer and inner members of one of the bracelet-units or links; and Fig. 9 is a transverse sectional view through the bracelet on approximately line 9-9, Fig. 3.

ble units or links preferably permanently connected together in endless or ring form, as illustrated particularly in Figs. 1 and 2.
Each of the units or links of the bracelet includes an outer preferably tubular member or casing 1 open at its ends. This member or casing 1, which may be of any suit able material preferably metallic, is preferably somewhat elliptical in shape in end elevation, as seen particularly in Fig. 7 and is lengthwise or longitudinally suitably arched or curved on any suitable radius, so that, when united in' finished or bracelet form, the several units will provide an attractive endless ring of the desired diameter, the several units neatly and uniformly meeting and matching at their ends, as seen in Fig. 1, when the bracelet is in normal or contracted condition. Integral with, or fixed to, casing 1 and extending interiorly thereacross at one end thereof, is a crosspiece or limiting stop 2.
Fitting within the casing 1 is a correspondingly arched or curved also preferably metallic inner unit-member 8. This member 3, which is also tubular, preferably tapers lengthwise and is preferably closed or otherwise formed at its smaller or reduced end to provide a spring-abutment, as at 4, member 3 at its larger end being also and correspondingly elliptical in end elevation and of such outside dimension as to fit smoothly within the end of an adjacent casing 1. Lengthwise from its said larger end, as seen particularly in Fig; 8, member 3 is cut away to provide apair of alining slots 5 adapted to fit cross-piece 2 of easing 1 and with the end wall of which slots 5 said cross-piece 2 is adapted to engage when the bracelet is in fully expanded condition. Fitting lengthwise and preferably loosely within member 3 is an elastic or resilient member preferably in the form of a coiled spring 6, one end of spring 6 abutting against closed end or stop 4 of the member 3 and the other end of spring 6 abutting against crosspiece or stop 2 of member or casing 1 when member 3 is operatively fitted within casing 1.
In operatively assembling the several units or links, an inner member 3 with its spring 6 is lengthwise slidably fitted in an outer member or casing 1, the larger end of member 3 being presented toward, and the slots 5 thereof engaging loosely with,
the cross-piece 2 of said casing 1. Inner member 3 is now suitably forced outwardly relatively to member l and against the tension of spring 6, spring 6 in such movement of member 3 being compressed between end wall 4: ofmember 3 and cross-piece 2 of casing 1, and the projected end of member 3 fitted within, and soldered or otherwise preferably permanently and rigidly fixed to, the end of an adjacent outer casing or member 1, and so on throughout the several units or links of the bracelet.
The bracelet being so formed, it will be evident that the several outer members or casings 1, on outward pull upon the bracelet, will expandingly move upon, or relatively to, inner members 3 against the tension of, and compressing between the respective cross-pieces 2 and inner-member end-walls 4, the several springs 6, the expanding movement of the several casings 1 being approximately equal to the combined length of the several pairs of slots 5 of inner members 3 and the expanding movement of each casing 1 being limited by the engagement of its cross-piece 2 with the end wall of the pair of slots of its inner member 3. On expanding pull upon the bracelet being released, the several casings 1 will, under the expansion of the springs 6, return to normal or bracelet-contracted condition.
Thus I provide an attractive bracelet of the endless or so-called Nethersole type which may be readily suitably expanded to be easily slipped over the hand to fit upon the wrist.
I am aware that minor changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my new bracelet may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An expansible bracelet or the like comprising a plurality of units, each unit including an inner tubular member provided with a spring abutment, an outer tubular member also provided with a spring-abutment, said outer member fitting around and being movable upon said inner member and the inner member of one unit being rigidly fixed at one end to and within the adjacent end of the outer member of the next unit, and a spring disposed wholly within said inner member and between the abutments of said inner and outer members, said spring being compressed on expanding movement of said outer member upon said inner member.
2. An expansible bracelet or the like comprising a plurality of units, each unit including an inner tubular member provided with a spring-abutment, an outer tubular member also provided with a spring-abutment, said outer member fitting around and being movable upon said inner member and the inner member of one unit being rigidly fixed at one end to and within the adjacent end of the outer member of the next unit, and a spring disposed wholly within said inner member and between the abutments or said inner and outer members, said spring being compressed on expanding movement of said outer member upon said inner member, the abutment of said outer member being adapted to engage with said inner member to limit expanding movement of said outer member upon said inner member.
3. An expansible bracelet or the like comprising a plurality of units, each unit including an inner approximately tubular member closed at one end and slotted lengthwise inwardly from its opposite end, an outer member fitting around and movable upon said inner member, the inner member of one unit being fixed at its slotted end to the adjacent end of the outer member of the next unit, a cross-piece on said outer member fitting in the slot of said inner member and adapted to engage the end wall of said slot to limit the expanding movement of said outer member on said inner member, and a spring within said inner member, said spring being interposed between the closed end of said inner member and said cross-piece and being compressed on expanding movement of said outer member on said inner member.

An expansible bracelet or the like comprising a plurality of units, each unit including an inner approximately tubular member closed at one end and having a pair of alining slots extending lengthwise inwardly from its opposite end, an outer approximately tubular open-ended member fitting around and movable upon said inner member, the inner member of one unit being fixed at its slotted end to and within the adjacent endof the outer member of the next unit, a cross-piece on said outer memberfitting in the slots of said inner member, said cross-piece being adapted to engage the end wall of said slots to limit the expanding movement of said outer member on said inner member, and a coiled spring lengthwise vided with a spring abutment, an outer tubular member also provided with a spring abutment, sa1d outer member fitting around and. being movable upon said mner member and said inner member being adapted to be rigidly fixed at one end to the adjacent end of the outer member of the next unit of the bracelet, and a spring disposed lengthwise wholly within said inner member, said spring being interposed between the abutments of said inner and outer members and being compressed on expanding movement of said outer member on said inner member.
6. In an expansible bracelet or the'like, a unit including an inner tubular member provided with a spring-abutment, an outer tubular member also provided with a springabntment, said outer member fitting around and being movable upon said inner member and said inner member being adapted to be rigidly fixed at one end to and within the adjacent end of the outer member of the next unit of the bracelet, and a spring disposed lengthwise wholly within said inner member, said spring being interposed between the abutments of said inner and outer members and being compressed on expanding movement of said outer member on said inner member, the abutment of said outer member being adapted to engage with said inner member to limit expanding movement of said outer memberon said inner member.
7. In an expansible bracelet or the like, a unit including an inner approximately tubular member closed at one end and slotted lengthwise inwardly from its opposite end, an outer member fitting around and movable upon said inner member, said inner member being adapted to be fixed at its said slotted end to the outer member of the next unit of the bracelet, a cross-piece on said outer member fitting in the slot of said inner member and adapted to engage the end wall of said slot to limit the expanding movement of said outer member on said inner member, and a spring within said inner member, said spring being interposed between the closed end of said inner member and said cross-piece and being compressed on expanding movement of said outer member on said inner member,
8. In an expansible bracelet or the like, a unit including an inner approximately tubular member closed at one end and having a pair of alining slots extending lengthwise inwardly from its opposite end, an outer approximately tubular member fitting around and movable upon said inner member, said inner member being adapted to be fixed at its said slotted end to the outer member of the next unit of the bracelet, a cross-piece on said outer member fitting in the slots of said inner member, said cross-piece being adapted to engage the end wall of said slots to limit the expanding movement of said outer member on said inner member, and a coiled spring disposed lengthwise within said inner member, said spring being interposed between the closed end of said inner member and said cross-piece and being compressed on expanding movement of said outer member on said inner member.
