PLANTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, rear.
Application filed July 8, 1916. Serial No. 108,210.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. KINDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Myerstown, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in planters and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character of a broadcast type and wherein centrifugal scatterers are employed; and it is an object of the invention to provide novel and improved means whereby the scatterers are rotatably supported by the hopper together with means operable by the scatterers for agitating the seed within the hoper. p The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved planter whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinaftermore fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a view in top plan illustrating a planter constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view illusity and provided from the lever 3 trating certain details of my invention as herein embodied; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal vertical sectional view illustrating certain features of the invention as herein disclosed; and Fig. 4 is a view partly in top plan and partly in section illustratin the scattering members as herein include As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes a wheel-supported body of a sulky type and which has mounted thereupon the hopper in its bottom with the discharge opening 1 under control of the slide valve 2, said slide valve 2 being operable mounted adjacent the seat structure S and whereby the amount of seed dropped per acre may be readily controlled.
H of. predetermined capac- Supported by the body B and disposed below the hopper H is a strap 4 provided at a point directly below the hopper with the bearing 5 for the lower end of the shaft 6 which extends upwardly through the bottom of the hopper at one side of the opening thereof, and the portion of the shaft 6 with in the hopper H is provided with the transversely disposed pins 7 which serve as agitating members for preventing the seed from within the ing 1 or otherwise interfere with the proper discharge of the seed through said opening.
Fixed to the shaft 6 at a point below the hopper H is the disk D having radiating therefrom the arms 8 provided along corresponding longitudinal margins with the upstanding flanges 9 which are extended inwardly of the shaft 6 and have their upper edges disposed on predetermined outward and downward inclines. The arms 8 together with the flanges constitute the scatterers and as the shaft 6 is rotated the seed dropped upon the disk D is scattered broadcast by centrifugal action in a'manner and for a purpose which is believed to be selfevident.
Secured to the shaft 6 below the disk D is a grooved pulley 10 around which is passed the endless member 11 which is also disposed around a grooved A of the body B, whereby it will be perceived that the requisite rotation will be imparted to the shaft 6 upon the travel of the body. 'It is also to be noted that the endless member 11 is disposed around suitable guide pulleys 14 depending from the body B and positioned in accordance with the necessities of practice.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a planter constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
pulley 12 fixed to the axle hopper clogging the open- I claim: pulleys coacting with said'endless member,
A planter comprising a portable body inand a scatterer fixed to the shaft at a point eluding a rotatable axle, a hopper carried intermediate the bottom of the hopper and by the body and provided with a discharge the pulley on the shaft.
